Why Put On Events The Beltane Weekend And Our Best Theme Yet

We sometimes get asked why we run events before the festival, some of aren't particularly Pagan in theme. The obvious answer is to raise funds. Putting on a festival doesn't only require hours and hours of hard work, it's expensive One of the principles of the Pagan Pride festival is keeping it free so everyone can join in. Talks, music, dance displays, workshops, children's activities and community activites are all free. We want everyone to be able to join us for a day of being Pagan and Proud. And Pagan Pride isn't only about the festival. We work all year round to promote a positive image of modern Paganism and to ensure accurate representation.

We get out and about to promote accurate representation of modern Paganism!

This means everyone who works for Pagan Pride is a volunteer. Our managers, festival team, performers and marshals all donate their time, skills and energy for free. Keeping the festival free means we need to raise funds in other ways such as selling merchandise (everyone loves a t-shirt!) and holding events. Putting on a fantastic music, burlesque or cabaret night both makes a significant contribution to Pagan Pride and means a fun night for everyone.

These events are also wonderful opportunities to come together as a community. We aren't all lucky enough to have a local moot and those of us who do like a change now and then. Pagan Pride events are a great place to make new friends whether you're a Pagan parent wanting to share experiences at our Family Fun day, a burlesque or music fan looking to meet similarly inclined people at the Twisted Teaparty or Saucy Solstice or you simply enjoy relaxing in nature with your community at the Beltane picnic.

The events we run play a big role in keeping the festival free, bringing our community together and spreading word of Pagan Pride. MAY DAY CEILIDH DANCE

To start off the three-day Weekender and to get into the spirit of Beltane we're proud to promote the May Day Ceilidh Dance! The organisers, Whirligig, have kindly allowed us to include their family-friendly Ceilidh in Beltane Weekend. We love this kind of event as it's a fun way to meet others in your local community, learn something new and have some laugha all in one evening!

The event is open to everyone whatever their age or experience level. So whether it's your first time out dancing or you're a 'Come Strictly' star, join us, Whirligig and live folk band 'Three Legged Dog' for a fantastic night of dance and community!

BELTANE FAMILY FUNDAY AND TEAPARTY

We used to be asked when we would organise a family friendly event in the day-time. Well your wish is our command so last year we went ahead with our very first Beltane Family Fun Day! We wondered how successful such an event would be prove so you can imagine how pleased we were to see plenty of folks come along, play games, get their faces painted and have fun- plus eat cake of course! (See what went on at our behind-the-scenes blog) Even our marshals couldn't resist joining in!

The marshals wanted to play musical chairs too!

This year we've moved to a bigger venue and we're including more than ever while keeping the event low-cost with FREE ENTRY! We're bringing back our favourite PP exclusive games so you and your children can walk the plank with Kevin the Shark, try to Hook a Starfish or Slay the Dragon if you dare!

We'll be running our free party games such as Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs throughout the day (you can't beat the oldies) and holding a Storybook-themed fancy dress competition at 4pm! You can get your kids ready for that by visiting the lovely Amy who'll be our facepainter again this year. The talented Jacqui will be showing little ones how to decorate biscuits and cakes while our arts and crafts table will be buzzing all afternoon with various projects! For the grown ups, there'll be refreshments available and our cake stall so you can have a cuppa and chill out during the day.

We're also coming up with new ways to keep the fun day low-cost and affordable! So we've created our special pre-order GOODY BAGS which are PACKED with activity tokens to keep your child busy and to help you save pennies! TWISTED TEAPARTY: GOTHIC CIRCUS-CARNIVAL

This may be one of my favourite themes yet. I love anything with a Gothic twist but the circus-carnival theme offers so many possibilities for amazing costumes and make-up (those on Pinterest can search for 'Gothic Circus' to see what I mean), brilliant games and of course, exceptional cabaret.

Our Events Staff and performers are getting into it too, I've had messages from various people about the costumes they're planning and great ideas for routines. This event is a little different from our usual Burlesque and Bellydance cabaret (like the Saucy Solstice coming up in June). The beautiful and talented Robyn, Queen Cobra and (all the way from Kuala Lumpur) Beatrice Flowers will be entertaining you all with entrancing dance. But joining our dark circus too will also be Beyond the Dawn, Taren and Ian Moore with three fantastic music sets to make it the greatest show on Earth (or not far off!)

And the fun doesn't stop there. We'll be hosting some beautiful stalls; tempting you with their wares will be Cobweb Designs, Positively Pagan Crafts, Silver Crow Jewellery, Swashbuckle Fairy Crafts and of course the Pagan Pride Merch table! We'll have a raffle with some fabulous prizes, our circus skills corner, Aurora Tarot to read your cards and Pagan Pride's carnival folk will be circulating with mysterious wares (hopefully not goldfish but you never know what they'll find!)

After the cabaret don't go away! We'll be having a fantastic DJ and disco so it's a great time to take to the ring and demo your dance skills! There'll also be a bar and our costume competition. Dressing up isn't mandatory but we do encourage it! Do you want to be an acrobat? A tight-rope walker? The world's strongest man, a bearded lady, a human cannon ball, a lion tamer, ring master or one of the spooky carnival folk? And of course there are the clowns...

Advance tickets are a bargain lb5 here! Or you can pay lb6 on the door. Every penny goes towards helping Pagan Pride keep the festival FREE and supporting us in presenting a positive image and accurate representation of modern Paganism. There's lots of work going on behind the scenes to give you a great show so roll up, roll up and join the our circus for the night!

BELTANE PICNIC

After the jam-packed weekend, we'll be after jam-sandwiches and probably cake at the Pagan Pride and Nottingham Pagan Network picnic! It's a free event and a chance to relax with your local community at the beautiful arboretum. See where the festival will be taking place in August and join us near the bandstand from midday.

We'll be having a family-friendly Beltane ritual at 2:30pm but otherwise it's just a chance to chill out, make new friends and hopefully enjoy the sunshine (remember the mantra: warm and dry!) Bring some food and a rug to sit on, plus musical instruments, drums, poi and maybe your juggling balls from the Twisted Teaparty!

The Faeries Oracle

A long while back I purchased a set of The Faeries Oracle cards with artwork by Brian Froud and text by Jessica Macbeth. They sat on the shelf for ages.

Then a few weeks back I was prompted to take them down and have a proper look. I have been drawing a card a day ever since.

There is of course the beautiful and quirky Brian Froud artwork to look at - it was the fact that they had has artwork on that made me purchase them in the first place.

Then there is the meaning of the cards. Each and every card I have drawn so far has been bang on the mark, it has known where I am in my life and how I have felt each day. Certain of the cards have also kicked my butt into action that was long overdue.

For instance, yesterday's card:

THE JOURNEYMAN

Adventure, independence, polishing of skills, travel.

All of the great ones and all of those who are filled by the spiritual light have been on this journey. They went into the wilderness, stepping like fools, off the safe paths into the waiting hands of their gods and goddesses. This is the journey of life, a pilgramage that begins in ignorant trust, passes through all of the doubts, fears, ups and downs, probably all of the delusions, and certainly all of the confusions. Through it, we learn slowly, painfully, a new kind of trust, a trust in the process, detached from the goal.

Adventure, independence, travel. A long path ahead - we hope. This card speaks of the need to perfect skills in working and living, but it acknowledges having a sound grounding in the basics. Optimistic, innocent and willing to learn, he shows us that intuition serves us well - but only if we pay attention to it.

Sometimes, we are operating from theory alone, and our knowledge may or may not be well grounded in reality. This card does not necessarily refer exclusively to beginnings, it can also signify a progression along a path, moving into the unknown from the known, a new phase in an ongoing process. The card may also represent untested concepts or ideas and suggest a need for balance between the intuititive and the rational as one approaches the unknown.

Consider where you are going. What are your long term goals? What are you doing that is helping you to move toward them?

DEATH

Nature, timely endings, release liberation

The Death card indicates a significant change, one that involves letting gof of the old life in order to move forward into the new. What we really fear about death is the unknown, the what next of it all. We may be experiencing great pain as a result of holding on to aspects of life that we have outgrown, we hold on because we don't know what is next. We want guarantees and instead we get open doors into unknown, darked spaces. Yet, when we go through these doors, closing them behind us, we discover a whole new world - one in which we can grow and develop into more of what we have the potential of being.

Something has reached a natural ending, and there is substantial and irrevocable change in the works. This change may be inner or outer or, most likely, both. It is timely and natural, but there may be much resistance to it. Make room for the new in your life - let the old go, lovingly, gently, willingly.

I can highly recommend the purchase of these cards, even if all you want to do is sit and look at the artwork!

How To Maintain A Clean Home

These are tips that the entire family can and should use. All family members living in the home should help take care of the home they live in. Almost everyone can do something, even small children. There is no reason why Mom should clean up behind herself and everyone else too! After all, if everyone is partaking of the blessings of the home to live in, everyone should help take care of it. While no one will change overnight, incorporating these tips into your daily life will soon make new and neater habits for even the messiest of the messes. A whole house filtration system installed on the air intake for the furnace will reduce the need to clean the furnace and the house. Dust will just not appear.

STEPS

* Clean up any and all messes immediately. You will get into the habit of doing this after a while. Once you walk away from it, chances are that you won't go back to it.

* Make a habit of cleaning up as you go! This saves time and keeps your home clean and organized. Washing dishes as you cook works great and prevents the large pile to wash after the meal.

* If you can't clean as you go, take 15 minutes a day to clean your home. It's a tempting thought to try and clean the entire house all at once, and if you can do that, great! However, most don't have that much time set aside on any one day. Instead, start with the kitchen and bathroom. These are two rooms that should always be clean and sanitary. Make it a goal to clean those two rooms and keep them clean. Then work on the rest of the home. Once you have a room clean and organized, make an effort to clean as you go so that it stays that way.

* Keep a bag/box for items that you no longer use/need. This includes clothes, toys, books....whatever is in your home that's not being used. Keep everything labeled with the date that you put it in the bag-get rid of it after seven days. You can donate it, sell it, trash it-just get rid of them! The idea here is to get "rid" of clutter, not just to move it from one place to another.

* Clean during commercial breaks. If you watch TV, have everyone hop up during commercials to do simple tasks like putting shoes away, hanging up coats and school bags up etc. Three people doing that three or four times through a 1/2 hour show equals a sum close to an hour of work! In addition, this ends up feelings more like a game than a chore.

KEEPING A KITCHEN CLEAN

* Never go to bed with a dirty kitchen. Even if you can't get to the dishes right after a meal, make sure the kitchen is clean before bedtime to prevent an unmanageable mess.

* Clean out your sink. After dinner each night, wash the dirty dishes that have accumulated through the day. If you have a dishwasher, load the dishes in for cleaning. If you don't, set them in a rack to dry once hand cleaned. When the sink is clear, wipe it down with soap and a dish towel to sanitize and clean it. Rinse with water. This step should take only a few minutes to complete.

* Spray a kitchen cleaner on the stove top, tabletops, and counters. Then wipe down with a clean paper or cloth towel. Be sure to clean any spots or stuck-on food as you go. It should only take a minute's worth of work.

* Inspect the kitchen floor for any spots or spills, and use the same cloth you used on the counter to wipe them up. You don't need to use spray cleaner unless the spots are really stuck on. Aim to spend 30 seconds to 1 minute on this task.

* Sweep the floor with a broom quickly if necessary. If there are food particles or visible dirt, you need to get rid of it before it builds up later. Spend 1 to 2 minutes on this job.

* Set rules in your house to require everyone to pitch in. If someone goes in to get a snack, make it clear that it's their responsibility to clean up immediately after they make the mess.

KEEPING A BATHROOM CLEAN

* Spray a glass cleaner on the mirror if has spots on it. Use a paper or cloth towel to wipe it down quickly. It should take only a few seconds, and if there's no visible debris on the mirror, skip the step. You'll get to it when you do your heavier cleaning.

* Wipe down the sink with the same cloth you used on the mirror. If you didn't clean the mirror, simply spray the cleaner in the sink and on the faucet and wipe up. Spend no more than 30 seconds on this step unless you have trouble spots that need attention.

* Use the same cloth from the sink and mirror to wipe down the edges of your tub, if you have one, and then the toilet seat, and rim. Make sure to do the toilet last. These tasks take only 1 minute to do.

* Scrub the toilet bowl with a toilet brush if there's a visible ring. It should take only 30 seconds. Leaving a ring to sit will make heavier cleaning take longer. If there's no ring, skip it for later.

* Spray an all-purpose daily cleaner on the shower doors or curtains, and wipe down with a clean, dry cloth. Once you get this in to your routine, it should take 1 minute and will help drastically cut down on the build-up of soap scrum.

KEEPING A BEDROOM CLEAN

* Take 2 minutes to make the bed. If you're in a hurry, pull the comforter over unkempt sheets, and smooth it down. You'll be getting in it soon anyway.

* Hang your worn clothes from the day on hangers, or toss them into the dirty clothes hamper. Take a minute to put away any jewelry or accessories, which will help keep the room clutter free.

* Clear off the nightstands from last night. Remove any old water glasses, magazines, or items you don't need right by the bed, and put them in the proper place. This should take 30 seconds.

KEEPING A LIVING ROOM CLEAN

* Straighten up the sofa. Remove any toys, books, or junk, and fluff the pillows. Fold any throw blankets, and put them back in place. This step takes 1 to 2 minutes, and is essential in keeping the room clean.

* Wipe down table surfaces with a clean cloth to remove crumbs, prints, or water rings. Spending 1 minute on this step will ensure you're lightening your load when it's time to do a more substantial cleaning job.

* Use a hand-held vacuum to pick up any dirt, food, or miscellaneous grime on the floor or rugs. Take 1 to 2 minutes here, and don't forget to zip over the surfaces of sofas or chairs if needed.

* Clear the floors of any clutter. Take up to 4 or 5 minutes to put away any toys, books, games, or other items that aren't where they belong. With this last step, your home should be in top shape for the day.

TIPS

* Make a list of chores that need to be done and scratch them off as you go. It will help prevent you from forgetting something and others can see what is left to be done. There won't be confusion with what they can assist with.

* While everyone is different and works at a different pace, everyone can do this!

* Go through your refrigerator the night before your trash pickup. Get rid of old foods or condiments that go unused. If the jar of olives has been there for 2 years, it is time to toss them. Check expiration dates on dressings and other condiments. Wipe off what shelves you can. Because your trash gets picked up the next day you won't need to worry about your outside trash can starting to smell.

* After your trash pick up you should spray bleach into your outside trashcan and hose out. Odors will be reduced and bugs and insects won't be drawn to it. Let it dry in the sun. Before you add your first trash bag you can spray the interior and the lid with Raid or other bug spray. This isn't so much an issue when the weather gets cold but it can save you from a smelly disaster.

* Every time you look in the refrigerator try to remove something old or unused. You'll get into the habit of looking and it will save you that smelly science project surprise later on.

* "All" members living in the home should do their part. There is no excuse for anyone to not help out unless they are physically or mentally unable to do so. Even a baby that crawls at six months can be taught to begin put their toy into the toy box. Get everyone involved and get organized!

* Curtains could be changed occasionally, dry cleaned and kept ready for use.

Pluto In Capricorn Religious Extremism As Political Reality

This is why from time to time we read about American missile strikes on these areas. An unintended consequence of these strikes, according to some analysts, has been to drive the Taliban base camps further into Pakistan.

A new development on Monday was the Pakistan government ceding control to the Taliban of the Swat Valley, which is only 100 miles from Karachi. This seems to me to be of huge significance, because it is not just a semi-autonomous tribal area. Pakistan has a weak government, and a President with a history of corruption. It is under a lot of internal pressure from militant Islam.

If possible, stand or sit under the Moon. Allow yourself to feel a direct relationship to it, as a mover of the living waters of the Earth and within our own bodies.

Do a grounding exercise, to bring you out of the chatter of small talk and into ritual space. Feel the earth under your feet and shake out the tension in the body.

Place the large water-filled bowl in front of you, or in the middle of your gathering on a table.

Each person writes what they're releasing on the floating candle. It's not important that it shows up, just that the intention is there.

As you place the candle into the bowl, declare what you're releasing.

Light the candle.

Allow yourself to feel the transfer of what you're releasing to the candle. As a group focus on letting go into the water, holding hands if that feels right.

Celebrate this release by sharing a feast under the full Moon!

Allow the candle to keep burning in the bowl as a symbol of the letting go process. The flame is a purifier, and symbolizes the sparks of inspiration as well. If you blow out your floating candle, and your bowl is in your home, relighting it will remind you of your commitment. Place inspiring pictures and totems around it that remind you of who you're becoming. Above all, give yourself kudos for honoring your own growth.
