The University of Chicago Divinity School SIGHTINGS" 11/5/2012 CHURCH AFFILIATION COLONIAL AND NOW-- MARTIN E. MARTYSuddenly it has dawned on pundits and publics that decline in religious affiliation and participation demands notice. Editorials on the subject abound. Some of these celebrated the liberation of society from religion, though descriptions of what is replacing it are seldom seen as satisfying (spiritually, philosophically, politically). We'll talk about that some other day. Others use the statistics of decline to scold those whom the editorialists blame: liberals, secularists, compromisers, sell-outs. Still others use the data to inspire counteraction: a search for new strategies, fresh theological statements, understanding the alienation of so many of the young from religious and other institutions. You will even find some of the Catholic and other churches who argue that statistical decline might leave the nation and its churches with leaner, purer memberships and affiliations. "Comparing church membership and participatory decline with data from the past calls for the question: which past? Saturday'sWall Street Journal" features an op-ed by David Aikman, author of the new Baker book, "One Nation Without God: The Battle for Christianity in an Age of Unbelief." Despite an occasional sneer, for example about "a secular orthodoxy clank[ing] its way peevishly through academe, the media and popular culture," Aikman's tone is that of a sincere and sincerely worried believer. One might suggest, however, that the past he chooses is more complex than he recalls. Colonial America was not as church-bound and church-moved as he suggests. He does better with the nineteenth century, when religious practice did take hold not only among Catholic newcomers but also revived Protestants. So how were things in the good old days? A consensus questioned by a few serious scholars-Patricia Bonomi among them-is that fewer than 20 percent of the colonial citizens were active in churches. Change came after 1776, so that, in one common estimate, church participation jumped from 17 percent to 34 percent between 1776 and 1850. A better past, more illuminating for comparison in present concerns, is between the early 1960s, when participation crested, and today.

Problems abound: Aikman and all other observers reckon that religious vitality is not simply tied to church and other-institutional membership. Thus, for example, Douglas and Rhona Hustedt Jacobsen, in an important new book "No Longer Invisible: Religion in University Education" (Oxford), see religion not simply confined by the "peevish" but is all over the place in many sectors of academe. Religion, for better and for worse-often for worse-gets more space and time in media than at any time in memory. Usually, stories of decline focus on "Mainline Protestantism," which has taken many hits even as it scores some others. But the demographers reveal that decline is also measured in many large evangelical Protestant churches, which are no longer exempt from the trends. Also, if one takes out the Mexican American population membership, almost everything one can say about Protestant decline is matched by losses in Catholic participation in worship and activity. Aikman, though his work is tinged by nostalgia for a nation that was never as faithful or godly or "together" as he suggests, does a favor by connecting decline with faltering in or rejection of "belief. Being spiritual" is hardly an address to that, if spirituality lacks ties to communities of faith and services provided by often derided "institutional religion" whenever it was healthier, as the Aikmans of today measure it. The Natural Witch

I was inspired by Mel's essay enough to write one of my own. Mel calls her craft Earth Magik. Which she has recently discovered that a lot of what she is practicing is the same as the Green witch practices.

My experience is based on the fact that I am a natural witch. I practice green witchcraft, and have since I discovered the craft. I call myself a natural witch because I try to keep things as natural as possible. Some may find that with me this is almost a contradiction. I am a beautician, my hair is colored, my nails are acrylic. Although I'm modern, I'm still natural. I work a lot in the woods.

My essay is about some experiences I have had in the forest across from where I live. I do a lot of my practice there, at a clearing I came across a little more than a year ago. My alter there is a jagged tree stump that apparently was struck by lightning or taken by fire.

I have performed many wonderful rites and spells there. One in particular that I will never forget, happened not too long ago. It was dusk and I walked over to my "hideaway" to perform a protection spell on a friend who was having a complicated pregnancy. As I began to meditate, I felt a warmth come over my body. I hadn't even started the spell, but I opened my eyes to see that I was surrounded by a pale green light, almost indetectable and the color of mossy water (is that a bad comparison?). It was warm, it was friendly...it was safe. I closed my eyes and visualized breathing in the light. I then visualized breathing this light into the bubble around my friend. When I was finished, I closed the circle and grounded the energies. Only days later, my friend called me and told me that she'd be feeling better than she had in days.

It may sound crazy, but I believe that the power and the love inside me made it possible. I was guided by the divine and was able to make it a little easier on my friend by removing the negetive energy around her. It was such a wonderful feeling.

Lately, I have heard a lot of people around here asking about ways to "make" thier own tools. A natural witch uses nothing but home-made tools (well, the witch who has financial problems anyway). I like to use moss and leaves, and different things I find in the forest to aid me in my spells and rites.

I am thankful that I have found this place...I wish that everyone could join me in my little part of the woods. The God/dess led me here, and I have made wonderful friends, and that's the best experience of my life.

world is a better place as a result? Yet, as -we have alread,
noted, there is more than a hint of allegory in the best science
fiction. Mr. Smith's story is both brief and entertaining so
that his allegory can only be accepted as a happy bonus.

IN THE IMAGICON

Dandor leaned back on the warm silk of the lounge and
stretched, letting his eyes wander up to the high ceiling of his
palace and then drop down to the blonde who knelt at his
feet. She was putting the finishing touches on his carefully
manicured toenails while the voluptuous brunette with the
mobile hips and the full red mouth leaned forward to pop
another grape into his mouth.
He studied the blonde, whose name was Cecily, and
thought about the other service she had performed for him
last night. That had been nice... very nice. But today he felt
bored with her, just as he was bored with the brunette whose
name he couldn't remember at the moment, and with the
cuddly redheaded twins and with...
Dandor yawned. Why were they all so damn worshipful
and always so eager to please?
It was almost, he thought with a wry grin, as though they
were products of his imagination, or ratherand he almost
laughed aloudof that greatest of all man's inventions, the
Imagicon.
"There now, don't they look nice?" Cecily said, sitting back
to admire his finished pedicure with pride.
Dandor looked at the ten shining objects of her gaze and
grimaced. It made him feel pretty silly.
Then Cecily made him feel even sillier by leaning over and
kissing his right foot with passionate red lips. "Oh, Dandor!
Dandor, I love you so much," she murmured.
Dandor resisted the temptation to use one of his newly
pampered feet to give her a healthy kick on her round little
bottom. He resisted it because even at times like this, when
his life with these women began to seem unreal, he tried to be
as kind as possible to them. Even when their worship and
adoration threatened to bore him to death, he tried to be kind.
So instead of kicking Cecily, he yawned.
The effect was almost the same. Her blue eyes widened in
fear, and the brunette raised wide eyes from the grape she
was peeling, her lips starting to tremble.
"You... you're going to leave us, aren't you?" Cecily
asked.
He yawned again and patted her head absentmindedly.
"Just for a little while, darling."
"Oh, Dandor!" the brunette wailed. "Don't you love us?"
"Of course I do, but"
"Dandor, please don't go," Cecily begged. "We'll do any-
thing to make you happy!"
"I know," he said, getting to his feet and stretching.
"You're both very sweet. But somehow I just feel drawn
to"
"Please stay," the brunette pleaded, falling at his feet.
"We'll have a party with champagne. Any kind of pleasure
you desire. We'll go get the other girls... I'll dance for
you..."
"I'm sorry, Daphne," he said, finally remembering her
name, "but you girls are beginning to seem unreal to me. And
when that happens, I must go."
. "But" Cecily was crying so hard she could hardly get the
words out-"when you leave us...it's a-almost... as
th-though we were... turned off."
Her words saddened him a little because in a way it was
true. When he left it was almost like turning them off. But
true or not, he couldn't do anything about it because he felt
himself being drawn irresistibly toward that other world.
He took one last look around at the incredible luxury of his
palatial palace, at the beauty of his women and at the warm
sun shining through the windows, and then he was gone.
The first thing he heard when he came out of the Imagicon
was the howling of the wind and the first thing he felt was the
numbing cold.
The next thing that assaulted his ears was the rasping
screech of his wife's voice. "So you finally came out of it, did
you?" Nona was yelling. "It's about time, you good-for-
nothing little runt!"
So he was really back on Nestrond, back on the coldest hell
of a colonial world in any universe. He had often thought that
he would never return. But here he was... back on Nestrond
and back with Nona.
"You've been gone long enough!" Nona said. She was a
big, rawboned woman with stringy black hair, a broad, flat
face with thin lips and uneven, yellowish teeth.
God but she's ugly, he thought as he stared at her. Beside
her, Cecily and the others are goddesses.
"It's a good thing you got back 'cause the ice wolves is
actin' up and we need frozen ice moss for the fire and..."
Dandor just stood there and listened as she went on with
the long list of chores that needed doing. Why, he wondered,
didn't she get one other boy friends from down at the mines
to do these things? He knew without being told that her lovers
had been around while he was "gone." Nona was as faithless
as she was ugly. And since there were twenty men to every
woman on this planet, she had plenty of opportunity.
"... and the cattleshed needs a new roof," she finished.
When he didn't answer immediately, she thrust her face close
to his. "Did you hear me? I said there's things to be done!"
"Yes, I heard you," he said.
"Then don't stand there like an idiot. Sit down and eat your
breakfast and then get out and get to work!"
Breakfast was a thick, greasy piece of rancid pork and a
bowl of lukewarm grits. Dandor choked on it but finally
forced it down. Then he put on his thermal suit and furs and
started for the door.
"Here, stupid!" Nona said, picking up a face mask from a
'pile of litter en thes table and fimgmgitat him. "You want to
, freeze yom nose off?"
He slapped the mask on quickly so she wouldn't see the
anger on his face, opened the door and plunged out. The wind
hit him in the face, hurling jagged ice crystals against his
mask. Nestrond! My God, why Nestrond? He thought long-
ingly of the comparative warmth of the cabin as he stared out
at the bleak landscape. He thought of the black box that was
the Imagicon. It sat in the one clear corner of the cabin and
Was the only way back to...
But no, he couldn't go back yet. There were too many
things to be done here. So with an axe over his shoulder, he
started across the frozen waste to the ancient peat bog where
they cut their fuel.
All morning long, with the wind raging at him and the
bitter cold making every breath an aching torment in his
chest, he cut and stacked the frozen peat. Then when the pale
yellow sun peeked through the clouds of ice crystals for a
moment and he saw it was almost directly overhead, he tied
up a large bundle of the brick-like slabs and hoisted it onto
his shoulder for the trip back to the miserable huts of
Nestrond.
Nona slapped a bowl of thin soup and a piece of stale
bread down in front of him and called it lunch. He ate in
silence and then went out behind the cabin to spend the
afternoon digging the new cesspool.
This made the work of the morning seem like a rest cure.
The ground had been frozen since Nestrond first started to
roll around its inadequate sun. By evening, his back and legs
and thighs ached tormentingly. With only a foot of ground
excavated, he had to give up when night fell and staggered
back toward the cabin with only one thought in mind...
sleep.
The howl that wrenched him from his first troubled
slumber seemed to come from the deepest pits of hell.
"Wha... what's that?" he asked.
"Ice wolves, you fool!" Nona screeched. "They're after the
cattleshed! Get out there and stop them!"
Dandor staggered to his feet and fumbled for his clothes as
another howl rent the night. He reached for his laser rifle
while Nona yelled again. "Hurry up! Those things can rip logs
off a shed like it was kindlin'."
He was out the door then with flashlight in one hand and
rifle in the other. He saw them at once. There were two of the
six-legged terrors. One of them was raised up on its four back
legs, its massive jaws ripping at the 'timber of the shed.
Dandor could hear the terrified bellow of the cattle inside.
He ploughed through the snow toward the creature. It
heard him and turned fiery red eyes in his direction. It kept
on slashing at the logs for a second and then whirled and
came at him in, great leaping bounds.
Caught by surprise, he had no time to drop the flashlight
and lift the laser rifle to fringe position. He had to fire from
the hip and the beam caught the monster in the shoulder.
It wasn't good enough. He sidestepped as the huge body
hurtled past him and then blasted its head off. "Then he almost
died himself as the decapitated thing went slithering through
the snow, spurting blood everywhere. He almost died because
for a split second he had forgotten its mate.
He remembered only when the creature struck him from
behind and sent him sprawling on the frozen ground. The
monstrous beast was on top of him and he screamed as a claw
ripped flesh away from his thigh and the powerful jaws
moved toward his throat.
The flashlight had been flung from his hand but the real
rifle was still resting in its sling attached to his shoulder. He
found the trigger and fired at full power. The laser beam tore
off a leg and haunch of the ice wolf, and it fell away from
him as he blasted it again. Then blackness closed in over him.
When he came to, he was lying on the table in the cabin.
Nona and a strange man were bending over him.
"Well, you got yourself in a pretty mess this time!" Nona
said as his eyes opened.
"That leg is going to have to come off," the stranger said.
"Are you a doctor?" Dandor asked in a husky croak.
"Only one this side of Alpha Centaury," the man said.
"The pain... can't you give me something for the pain?"
"I gave you the last morphine I had. Back on Earth we
might have saved that leg, but here" He made a helpless
gesture.
White-hot flame seemed to envelop the slashed leg. Dandor
winced and then saw the half smile on Nona's lips as she said,
"With no more morphine or anything else, cutting off that leg
is gonna hurt like hell, ain't it. Doc?"
"I got some whiskey in my car," the doctor said. "I'll go get
it."
HewMtIlCfcbling off, and Nona leaned overDandor and
looted iafO his eyes. "It's really gonna hurt, sweetie. It's
gOnna hurt like it hurt me all those times when you went off
ted left me. When you went off in your black box."
"No, Nona, no! It didn't hurt you. You're not" He
almost said she wasn't capable of being hurt. But he stopped,
because he didn't know for sure if that were true.
"With only one leg, you're not gonna be able to get in that
damn thing by yourself," she said. "You're gonna have to stay
here and be nice to me."
"Nona! No, you don't understand!" He started to plead
with her, but then the doctor was back with a quart of whiskey
and his black bag.
"Here, drink this fast," the man said, handing Dandor the
bottle.
He drank deeply and quickly. But it didn't help much.
As the doctor cut and sawed, Dandor was sure his screams
would burst his skull. At times he wondered why his curses
didn't snap the straps that held him down or drive off the two
tormentors bending over him.
"Well, I guess that's it," the doctor was saying when the
agony dragged him up into consciousness again. "We're gonna
have to cauterize this stump or he'll bleed to death. I ain't got
nuthin' but fire to do it with either. Come help me heat up the
poker, woman."
Dandor came fully awake as he caught the over-the-
shoulder look Nona gave him and saw her eyes dart toward
the Imagicon. It was almost as though she had said aloud,
"You'll belong to me now... only to me. There won't be no
more of that goin' off."
But she couldn't! How could she? Through the haze of
morphine, alcohol and pain, Dandor tried to ask himself...
why should she treat him ths way? He couldn't think of any
answer.
And as they hurried off to prepare the cauterizing iron for
the bloody stump of his leg, the black coffin-like shape of the
Imagicon filled his eyes and his mind.
If the pain hadn't already been more than reason could
bear, he wouldn't have had the courage to roll off the table
and begin crawling toward the black box, leaving a trail of
blood behind him. The black box. Somehow he knew it
represented a surcease from pain, a promise of ultimate
safety.
He reached it without their being aware of his actions, and
by making a supreme effort, he pulled himself up high enough
to press his palm against the sensor that identified him
instantly and was the only thing in this or any other universe
that could open it.
He collapsed, more dead than alive, into the Imagicon and
it closed silently over him.
Then there was a bright, warm world around him, and
bright young faces above him.
"Oh, Dandor, darling! Darling," Cecily cried, putting her
soft, warm arms around him.
"Sweetheart, you've come back!" Daphne whispered.
"We're so happy to see you!" the redheaded Terri mur-
mured.
"We're so happy to see you!" her twin, Jerri, repeated.
"And I'm the happiest of all!" Dandor assured them, gazing
down at his leg... at his perfectly whole, intact leg which felt
no pain whatever. "Thank God! Thank God, I'm back!"
The Imagicon had worked! It had worked once again! It
had taken him to the world of imagination and back again to
reality... to wonderful, wonderful reality!
Dandor sat up and looked around at his own warm,
marvelous world. It was the world of Earth in 22300, the
world a hundred years after The Plague. The Plague which
had attacked the male genes and reduced the male population
to a few thousand and made each man the center of an eager
and worshipful harem of women.
Many of the surviving men had not been able to stand the
strain. Too many years of adoration, too many years of
having everything and every woman they wanted had proved
too much for them.
Then there had come the Imagicon, the invention that
made any world a man desired seem absolutely real. Some
men had used it to create even more exotic and wonderful
worlds than the one they lived in, but that had been only
more of a good thing and had made them more dissatisfied
than ever.
Dandor had been wise. With his Imagicon, he had created
an entirely different kind of world... a world of cold and
terror called Nestrond. Dandor had known a great truth.
What good was paradise without something to compare it
to? Without a taste of hell from time to time, how could a
man appreciate heaven?

The Call Of The Fox

For those of you who've been following my artistic journey, you know about my Trickster series. Paintings featuring Loki, Raven, and Fox. Fox... He's shown up in both paintings so far. And, now he's started to take over my decorating. As you can see from above, my household altar - the one with the candles always lit and all the daily goings on happening - used to be a Fortuna altar. Then I was given an owl. And then I found another owl. And a jade frog happened. And after a trip to the Big Red Dot...Fox. Finally. Fox has made his way to my household altar.

And my feet. Yes, those are Fox socks. (You can get those, as well, at the Big Red Dot.)

Now, I've never had a patron deity. I've never had anyone (should that be anyOne if I'm talking about gods?) express any kind of interest in me. Honestly, I've always thought all the talk of having deities call to you was more a way to say "I really like Deity X, and I would like to subscribe to their newsletter". But, I think it's time to admit that Fox might be saying Howdy.

Here's where the skeptical side of my head pops in. What, exactly, do I think is going on? Maybe I am just enjoying Fox iconography. Maybe my tastes are evolving to include fuzzy, red fur balls. Maybe there's an element of the traditional Trickster archetype that's speaking to me on a subconscious and spiritual level through the voice or face or whatnot of Fox.

And what does it say if the Trickster element is speaking to me right now? What does it say if cute, cuddly red dog-cousins are roaming my dreams? Who in the world knows... But, I think it's safe to say...

Sesame Streets Grover Asks Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz Why Do People Need A Day Of Rest

Sesame Street's Grover has been to Israel and learned all about Shabbat. Now he asks a good question: Why do people need a day of rest?

And who's responding to Grover? None other than Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, who will be completing his monumental effort of translation and commentary on the Talmud on November 7.

His mission has been to give Jewish texts and learning back to the Jewish people. To mark this achievement, communities around the world are joining in a Global Day of Jewish Learning next Sunday, November 7.

That day will feature Jewish dialogue and exploration, joining together in celebration of all that unites us. The conversation that has spanned millennia will resonate at once in community centers, classrooms, and synagogues across the globe. Sponsors of the day of learning include an impressive list of Jewish religious and cultural organizations, from the Orthodox Union, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Union for Reform Judaism, to the Jewish Book Council, Birthright Israel, and Shalom Sesame.

Grover's big question is one of many that are being asked in preparation for the Global Day of Jewish Learning.

The concept is beautifully presented in an 8 minute video below, that weaves together scenes of Jewish learning around the world and a story from the Talmud about Choni the Circle Drawer (Choni Ha-Maagel).Briefly, A devastating drought had stricken the land of Israel -- a sign, it is said, of a generation burdened by the consequences of not following the Torah. Threatened by famine, the people turned to Choni, whose purity and Torah wisdom left him untainted by the shortcomings of his generation."Choni," the people said, "Pray that rain should fall."

Choni prayed. But nothing happened.

Drawing a circle with a twig, the Mishnah relates, he stepped inside and took an oath not to go out until the people received rain.

It rained, but in very little drops -- enough to release Choni from his oath. But not enough, said the people, to fill their dried-up wells and avert famine.

So rather than step out, Choni raised his prayer (and his chutzpah) to a higher level: "G-d, this is not what I asked for!"

While the citizens held their breath to await the response, it began to rain. But the drops, our sages say, were as "big as the opening of a jug and no drop less than a log."

Choni understood that since the time of the exodus from Egypt, the Jewish people still were unable to handle either an abundance or lack of blessings. So with unprecedented chutzpah, he again dared say, "G-d, this is not what I asked for!"

And it rained a normal rain. Except that the rain continued for so long that the people began fleeing to higher elevations. Choni recognized that the people still had not merited truly proper rains, and made an offering on their behalf. And that's good for Choni, because his daring prayers almost earned him the highest form of exile from the community.

"Were you not Choni I would pronounce a ban upon you," declared Shimon ben Shetach, the head of the "Sanhedrin", the highest legal body of the time. "But what shall I do to you," Shetach continued, "that you misbehave before G-d and He fulfills your wish -- like a son who misbehaves towards his father and his father fulfills his wish."

From that time on, our sages say, Choni was known as Choni HaMe'Agel (Choni the Circle-Maker).

Each community throughout the world will decide what their Global Day event will look like. The structure of each event will depend on audience, resources and local interest. Some communities in North America are working with their local Jewish book fair to develop a meaning Global Day experience while others might be creating events around PJ Library or other adult learning opportunities in their own communities.

Every community event will be unique -- some might be an all day experience while others only an hour or two. For some, the Global Day will be a first-time learning experience; for others who learn regularly, this may be their first opportunity to learn in a large group setting. For still others, communal learning may be a regular practice and it will be the international "achdut", or unifying aspect, that provides meaning. The important of the Global Day is bringing together people from all walks of life and providing a Jewish learning experience.

So what was Rabbi Steinsaltz's answer to Grover? Here it is:

The day of rest is a comparatively new idea, the influence of the Jewish Shabbat on the world. From a secular perspective, a rest day breaks the killing routine of life. Even when we can't really relax, the day still lessens the unbearable burden of duties and demands, orders and work.However, when the day of rest is a holy day, it has the power of re-infusing some spirit of life into an age that is, in many ways, empty of any exalted feeling. Such a day revives the dormant soul, opening our eyes so that we can watch for something higher.

From my perspective, there are truly two ways to view anything - through the eyes of love or through the eyes of fear. Fear comprises doubt, worry, insecurities, feelings of lack and less than. Fear resides in the lower energies, which is our human-ness or ego, and is a lower vibration. Love comes from the heart and is a higher vibration. Recognizing that each one of us does have moments of fear and doubt as well as the other emotions, it is vitally important to honor these emotions. In other words, acknowledge what you are feeling and then allow yourself to express these emotions verbally so that they can be released rather than contained within our energetic be-ing. This process begins with loving you and opening your heart to love. In doing so, you will discover your greatest gift of all - the deep connection to your Higher Self and inner knowingness. Coming from a place of love will offer you the ability to see everyone and everything from the higher perspective of love recognizing that everyone is indeed having their own human life experience. In addition, it will allow you the opportunity to manifest your heart's desire from the higher vibration and intention of love rather than the lower vibration of fear and feelings of lack. The Universal Law of Attraction is a tool for manifesting. It is based on the idea that whatever we give a lot of attention to will become part of our lives. In doing so, we are co-creating with the Universe. What you focus on becomes your reality so it is very important to pay attention to the energy of your thoughts, words, and actions. In order to use the Universal Law of Attraction effectively and efficiently, it is imperative that you clearly identify what you want, focus your thoughts on what you have identified, and then allow it to manifest. In other words, do not block the manifestation from occurring by infusing it with doubt, worry, and fear. Also, take into consideration that you will attract what you desire if it is for your Highest and best good. Release the need to control the details of the manifestation process such as the how, the when, the why, the what, and the where aspects of it. As you raise your vibration, creation seems to be happening very quickly as the Universe is working with you to bring your desires to fruition. Believe you are worthy to manifest it, visualize yourself experiencing it, allow the manifestation to happen without inhibiting the process, and you will manifest these desires if you are intended to. The key word is "allow." Being clear about your heart's desires while allowing the manifestation to occur is essential. Being mindful of the intention behind the manifestation should be continually acknowledged. Remember to focus your attention on what you wish to manifest. Do NOT focus on what you already have that you don't like. You are going to manifest what you are focusing on. For example, an individual may desire money to pay bills. Many times, the energy is focused on the bills, which sends the message to the Universe that you want more bills. If you wish to increase your abundance in your life, focus on abundance and affirming that your needs are met. Expressing your gratitude for what you already have is equally important. Be conscious of the thoughts you are having. Listen to the words that you speak and know that word modification may be necessary to avoid confusion and to be clear about your intentions. Words are energy and have their own vibration. Choose to use high-vibration words rather than low-vibration words so that you will attract the outcome you desire. Express what you desire rather than your present state of be-ing. Be clear about what you mean. Avoid using the words trying or hoping when declaring what you want as it evokes doubt. Leave it out of the sentence completely. Use the words I AM whenever possible as it is a strong declaration of what you desire. When we are in a state of bliss and peacefulness and offering gratitude daily, these feelings and emotions flow back to us effortlessly with ease. On the other hand, when we feel sad and lonely, these same feelings continue to swirl and twirl around us leaving us in this same state. This wave of energy is assisting each one of us in rapidly manifesting what we desire. New people are coming into our lives just as people are leaving. Chaos is coming in for some people to assist them in clearing out the clutter. However, this chaos isn't something that we should be afraid of. Rather, I encourage you to recognize it, acknowledge it and then allow it to do its work so that you can move forward with grace and ease. It may feel painful at times, but I encourage you to see the light through the proverbial darkness. This occurrence is making room for more light and goodness to enter into your life. The changes may not be comfortable either, but they are necessary for continued growth. When feeling overwhelmed during these changes, allow yourself to be mindful of your breathing - pause, inhale, and exhale. Ground and center your energy bringing your awareness to this present moment. Rather than succumbing to the emotions that are possible, shift the energy and honor the emotions that you are feeling by acknowledging them. Then, focus your attention on raising your vibration and seeing the experiences and individuals from a higher perspective. Surrender to the Universe anything and anyone that no longer serves you or your Higher purpose so that you may choose to create the life you desire and all of its experiences consciously. EXERCISE TO ASSIST YOU IN CREATING YOUR HEART'S DESIRE 1. Take a moment to write down your desires, dreams, and aspirations on a piece of paper. You are worthy to receive and to achieve all that you desire. A thought becomes tangible once it is written on paper. It takes form. You can see the words and touch the paper. 2. Read what you have written and see how you feel when reading it. Release the need to know the details of the manifestation such as how it will happen and when it will happen. Trust that all is as it should be in each and every moment. 3. Focus your attention on just one item on your list. In doing so, you are saying, "This is what I really desire to manifest in this moment." What is your intention for manifesting this particular desire? Is the intention love-based or one of lack (fear-based)? 4. Envision yourself in the flow of creation. Remind yourself that you have the ability and power to create the life you desire. Magickal Dangers

We've all read about the rules of magick. When we first told we look at them as procedure. A spell casting should have a link such as a lock of hair, unwashed garments etc. We are told to guard our magickal items closely as they can be used against us. Most people understand those thoughts and follow along. Then we are told to beware of the void course of the moon. The what?

Several experiences of late have proven to me once and for all that these are not mere procedure but esoteric facts.

I have plans to sell my house and move as part of my new life plan. So, I am cleaning out my magickal storage room. I have a bedroom full of stuff. There are twelves shelves with so many books they are falling off the rack. There are bins on the floor, a closet packed with mostly magickal items and two garage-type storage shelves packed to overflowing. Some of it is hitting the trash, other items are saved because they may be useful or because they have been used in a manner that makes tossing them out seem disrespectful. This is a lot of work.

The education I am getting from this trip down memory lane is invaluable. I am finding items that other people left behind after ritual that I must have placed in that room for safe keeping. When I pick them up, I am reminded of the ownders and how they have changed or not changed. I am shocked by the little mundane things that should not have held energy to them but explode in a field of emotion. The memories come back just as if they were evoked by an old song. If it was a magickal garment, I would understand. If it was jewelry, I'd understand. A take out menu? You have got to be kidding me.

I assume the person who left the menu underwent an initiation that night or was being broken down by the process or some such thing. I swear if I wanted to curse or bless that person, I could have easily done so with that menu in my hand. I threw it away.

Lesson: Never leave your magickal items at anyone's house. If you have to, make a list of what you bring and check off the inventory as you leave. Do not leave the house without your stuff. You cannot be assured the person who finds it will not hold a grudge five years later or want to experiment with your life. They may be your friend now, you may be mistaken or they may become temporarily unstable and do something stupid. Secondly, those things from emotional times, good or bad, are even more potent than genetic material left behind. The more emotionally charged you are, the more careful you should be. Obvious problem, the more emotional you are, the harder it is to be careful.

The void course of the moon is a different animal all together. In fact, if it were an animal it would be a duck-billed platypus. If you don't know how odd this animal is, do some research. You'll find that it is the only poisonous mammal in North America. Does it deliver it's poison with a bite, a sting or spit? No, it has a bone spur on its hind foot, foot, not feet.

From Wikipedia, which jived with what I already knew, "The unusual appearance of this egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate fraud. It is one of the few venomous mammals, the male platypus having a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans. "I am pretty sure this creature manifested during a void of course moon.

When I first started to encounter the effects of this phenomena, I was baffled. I explained strange disjointed visions and was told to check the moon calendar for those dates and find out if the moon was void. It was in each case.

The last time I encountered this was during a healing session. I could see the person I was trying to heal but she was within this weird post-industrial punk scene. She was within a corroded copper-green iron skeleton of a building, table saw blades floated by, a green fuzzy cloud swam through the air, electric currents hummed and before here was a shimmering group of vertical lines looking much like a bar code.

In other visions, I have seen a bird with an ax for a head, a sword buried in a rock...but the hilt was in the rock, air that was on fire, trees growing downward from the sky and that was just what I can describe.

My theory on this is the moon filters energies through the lens of the house it is in. When that filter is not there, you get the full energy of manifestation but as a blind force. It will ground but it doesn't care how, just like lightening. Watch out or you will get fried. With that, there shouldn't be a lot of questions about why magick is a bad idea during this time unless you are more talented or experienced than I.

Your mere word may appear to be simple but in truth the words you choose to express hold great power.

Your word holds the power to create and this power to create is a gift given to each of you from God in order to communicate, to be heard - it is through your ability to communicate that you are able to manifest what it is you wish for most.

When you speak, the words you choose demonstrates your creative power.

It makes little difference what your mother tongue is, your intent spoken through your word provides insight to how you are feeling, what it is you are wishing and what will manifest at the result of you expressing your words.

Understand dear ones, the words you utter are not just etches you put on paper or sounds you make when speaking, your words are a force within your power of speech - a power that provides you with the capability to communicate, to think and to create certain situations to come into your life that will provide you with the growth and development needed for your life journey.

The power of speech, to talk is a remarkable gift, one that deserves appreciation and respect and to be used wisely.

Of all the tools you have at your fingertips, your word is the most powerful - it is the magic of your manifestations that helps to create a beautiful life, but it also can be the main culprit that brings in pain and discord.

One misuse of a single word can create so much havoc - you know this as truth as you have experienced this yourself during conversations with other dear souls.

One misunderstood word can create so much grief. Whereas when you choose your words wisely and become impeccable with their delivery you have the power and ability to attract love, beauty and peace of mind.

Quite simply, it is a matter of how to use your words, choosing the right words at the right time. Words can either set you free or create deeper stagnation.

Yet each of you possesses the ability to become more aware of what is going through your thoughts that is largely based on your feelings and choosing what it is you wish to express that will bring about a successful outcome in all situations.

Making the power of your word work for you for the greater good is a choice only you can make, and it is one that we encourage you to consciously try.

From all the interactions and experiences you have had with others, you know by now how powerful words are; they can destroy a person's confidence with a single word, or the right words can raise a person's confidence.

Words have had the power to destroy the lives of thousands of people across the world when used to spread fear and harm.

Yet words can also be used to bring peace, healing, love and respect.

The mind that holds your emotions and feelings is what is needed to recognized as the place to begin making changes that affect the words you choose to express yourself. Understand dear ones; your mind is like rich, productive soil.

You can plant seeds of fear, peace, discord, love, compassion, concepts, etc., and it will grow. You have a choice on what is permitted to grow and what is not. Just because you feel fear does not mean you are required to act on this.

You have the power and ability to understand why you fear and to give yourself the love and compassion you need to turn that fear into peaceful understanding. Nurture yourself dear ones, be compassionate and understanding and allow the power of your words free you. They are your ticket to what you want to achieve most on this journey. The power within the words you speak not only attracts the changes you wish to see develop; it is within the power that provides you with the ability to make those changes happen.

When you fully realize the power of the words that come through your mouth, you will come understand the necessity of being more aware and demonstrating wisdom within the words you choose to speak.

You learn which words to choose that are helpful, uplifting, encouraging; words that demonstrate understanding and compassion. Your words are the expressions of your thoughts in action.

The more aware of them you become the clearer you are able to communicate.

Comprehend dear ones, what you express and declare through your words have the ability of making a huge impact on the development of your journey and where your path is taking you to. Learn to instruct yourself to make positive use of your words by changing your thoughts to be more of a positive nature.

When faced in any kind of situation, remember to observe your thoughts and choose your words carefully. Positive changes will manifest when you are able to change your thoughts and the words that come from your thoughts.

Regardless where you journey is taking you to or the experiences you will have, remember to tell yourself, "You are wise, you are love and that God is with you, supporting you through the situation you have found yourself in.

As you speak positive affirmations, these help to re-create more positive thoughts that will reflect in the words you choose to express.

Watch how people you communicate with react when you express yourself with positive and intelligent words, instead of words that carry negativity or uncertainty.

We know not everyone thinks positive at every single moment of their lives, that there are situations that will give cause to uncertainty.

These are personal growth moments; they are sacred and important. Yet even as you move through them, you are still able to present yourself as being in the Present and demonstrate yourself as being positive within moments of uncertainty just by the choice of your words.

People will understand if you are going through a hard time, but don't make the hard time be the excuse for not choosing words that express love for another, or understanding of what is happening. Your words are the extension, the expression of your thoughts and even as you persevere through a challenging situation, they can be the means to a peaceful end.

By now, you understand in order to change your life you must change your thoughts and this dear ones also includes the words you choose to speak or to write. The power they hold is incredible and they are your responsibility.

They can help you achieve a much more prosperous life when working together in harmony or a life filled with discord.

Deliberately make use of your thoughts in a positive manner and believe with conscious effort from you that is filled with unconditional love, your words will become impeccable. Let the power of your words liberate you and enrich the quality of your life - it is always up to you dear ones - you choose.
