The Need For Unity

The Need For Unity
It is a self-evident fact that the Continuum is divided into a large number of small and even smaller jurisdictions, as a result of both human error and human pride. During this Holy season of Lent we re-read St John's Gospel, one of whose characteristic foci is unity - with Christ and with one another. The prayer "that they may be one" comes from the High Priestly prayer in St. John 17, and it is something that we should reflect upon as we look upon the state of the Church this Lent.

Whilst it is utterly inappropriate for anyone to go about apportioning blame when it comes to the events of 1977-82 that led to the original Anglican Church of North America (Episcopal) fragmenting into the ACC, APCK, and UECNA, it is appropriate is that we all pray for a reunion of these groups, and for the coming together of Continuing Anglicanism as a whole. However, this is not going to be achieved by harping upon old controversies and old injuries, but rather by looking forward and trying to recapture what Gfrey Rowell described in his book of the same title as "The Vision Glorious," which I read for the first time in the course of a four and half hour bus ride from Dublin to 'Derry. The vision glorious that Bishop Rowell describes is that of Catholic Anglicanism.

Whilst it is still fashion in some circles to describe the Oxford Movement as some sort of revolution, it did, in fact, draw on the pre-existing High Church and Non-Juring traditions. It was, first and foremost, a theological movement that exalted Sacrament, Scripture, Spirituality, and the quest for Personal Holiness over the dominant rationalism of the day. Some writers - for example Gfrey Faber in his "Oxford Apostles" and W S J Pickering in his "Anglo-Catholicism" - have attempted to define the Oxford Movement in terms of a Romantic reaction against the rationalism of the comparitively liberal Noetics and the Broad Churchmanship of the "Five Tutors." To do this ignores the theological focus of the movement, and attempts to make it largely cultural.

When asked in the 1840s what made a Tractarian, Pusey replied that a Tractarian had a high view of Holy Scripture, the three Creeds, the two Dominical Sacraments, the Apostolic Ministry, and the need for personal holiness. His answer was deliberately bland, but it also pointed out the fact that the Tractarians did not stand for anything new, but they express accepted truths in startling ways, so as provoke opposition from those who saw the Church of England as a "national, Protestant Church" rather than the English expression of the Church Catholic, reformed according to the teachings of Holy Scripture and the ancient Fathers and Councils of the Church.

By the 1970s, when it became necessary for faith Anglicans to "continue" the Faith in North America, the battle in favour of the Reformed Catholic understanding of Anglicanism that had been largely won, particularly in North America, was being lost in the face of an attack by the Mongol hoards of Revisionism. This desire to maintain the Reformed Catholic heritage of Anglicanism led to the "Affirmation of St Louis" which received an all but unanimous vote at the 1977 Congress. For those of us who wish to restore Continuing Anglican Unity, it should serve as a pattern as to what we need to conserve and promote, and also as a reminder of the issues we can safely leave to personal taste and good sense.

The first thing that the Affirmation is absolutely clear about is the deposit of Faith. The foundations of Anglican orthodoxy are:

Holy Scripture

The Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds

The first Seven Ecumenical Councils

The writings and teachings of the Early Fathers

The St Louis Congress was also clear about embracing the mainstream of Anglican heritage, namely the following:

That within the perameters set above the Anglican Formularies; the BCP, the XXXIX Articles and the Homilies remain authoritative.

That the 1928 BCP (PECUSA) and the 1962 BCP (Canada), and by extension the last orthodox Prayer Book of the representatives of each Province that comes into the Continuum represents the standard of Faith.

A special, historical status is granted to the 1549 BCP.

This both places Anglicanism within Christendom as a reformed Catholic Church, but also sets the boundaries of what is theologically and liturgically important. Too many of our subsequent disagreements among ourselves have been due to arguments about matters of secondary, or even tertiary importance. It is therefore undesireable to erect any other standard of orthodoxy within the Continuum than the Affirmation of St Louis and the broad heritage of Anglican Faith and Practice to which it appeals. If one parish uses the Missal, and another the Book of Common Prayer that should not be a cause for internal wrangling because we are upholding and maintaining the same faith once delivered to the saints. All the "more Catholic than thou," and "more Anglican than thou" games that have been played over the last thirty years should cease because they distract us from making the vision glorious incarnate. One thing I know we all agree on - that the world needs the unequivocable witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed to and through the one, holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

So how does unity come about? I believe it was a Fr. Pearse, who made much use of the phrase "the family that prays together stays together" in his radio and TV campaigns of the 1940s and 50s. It is also a truth that Continuing Anglicans need to embrace that idea so that the clergy and laity of the various jurisdictions can meet together and lose their unarticulated fear that somehow that "other lot" are somehow stranger than we are. There is also a need for the clergy, especially bishops, to meet together to pray and talk honestly about the trifles that divide us with the absolute intention of finding our way past them. Unity is Our Lord's will for His Church, and I would hope that in the next decade Continuing Anglicans will recover theirs.

If the three churches directly descended from the St. Louis Congress were to come together, the position of the Continuing Anglican Church in the United States would be immeasurably strengthened because the energy we currently put into maintaining our denominational structures could be freed up for Mission and Evangelism. In addition to this we could rationalize our diocesan structures, establish more efficient seminaries and reading for orders programmes, etc..

There is a pressing need to do this. America is rapidly following much of Europe in becoming a post-Christian society. We need to be mindful that the Church needs to be ready to meet the challenges that preaching the Gospel in that unfriendly environment presents. So far in a largely, if inarticulately, Christian culture we have frequently been given a free pass for our unnecessary divisions, but that is not going to be case in the future. We need to remember that in order for humanity to reach its fullest potential it needs to hear, believe, embrace and live the one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Faith.

So What Am I

So What Am I
Someone asked me not too long ago if I was a witch. I quickly answered with a "No" because I consider myself a magician. I play with Wiccans, and Druids, regularly, but I am definitely a magician. I can relate to CM. The person had some disparaging remarks about Wicca, that at first, seem to make sense but then I realized later that the person has pretentious hater tendencies. Note to self: Do a little more filtering when I am around that particular person.

Like with everything, the comment began a long process of wondering. I know many ceremonial magicians have a flavor, some are Wiccan flavored, some are Christian flavored, some are Thelema flavored, some are Golden Dawn flavored and I believe there are even Druid flavored ones.

So since I started to think about flavorings, my mind went directly to sweet things to eat. (The low calorie diet is really beginning to test me.) If ceremonial magick were a dessert treat, would I love it and what would the type of dessert treat would it be? Wiccan would definitely be a harvest cake or a carrot cake with yummy sticky frosting. Thelema would be a triple chocolate cake with a cherry on top. The Golden Dawn would definitely be a sundae with three types of ice cream, loaded with syrups, nuts and sprinkles. Druidry would be a oatmeal raisin ice cream sandwich with butter pecan ice cream in the middle. Christian mysticism would be a thick creamy New York style cheesecake with extra strawberries and/or cherries on top.

Would I love these desserts? I answer with a resounding, "YES!"

Now I have to go back to reality and eat my carrots, celery sticks and lean white meat for dinner. At least I am not starving like I am in a third world country.

On Serving One Another In Love

On Serving One Another In Love
by Jeremy Clarke, Legacy Baptist Church, Northwest Arkansas

The union that believers have with Christ is a union they share with one another. As we have cited so often these last months, "FOR BY ONE SPIRIT, WE WERE ALL BAPTIZED INTO ONE BODY....AND WERE ALL MADE TO DRINK OF ONE SPIRIT." (1 Cor 12) I'll grant you, this is an abstract thought....but it is nonetheless profoundly true. However hated identification with Christ's Church might be, believers enjoy an inviolable union with the Son of God Himself and are therefore ushered into an equally inviolable union with one another. The people of God are the family of God; and the family of God are joint heirs of heaven.

The bond and union that believers share with one another, therefore, ought to be prized....it ought to be esteemed. Further, it ought to be diligently cared for, guarded, strengthened, and nurtured. There is an explicit duty we owe to one another in this way, having first given ourselves to Christ. Some in the church have a prolific sense of this, don't they? They exude esteem and honor for the people of God; no doubt because they remain in a steady state of awe and wonder that they were ever called to join so blessed a family. Subsequently, the expression of their life among us is a steady diet of humility, meekness, kindness, and compassion among others. They remain ever watchful for opportunities to serve their blood-bought brother or sister....and are equally watchful not to put a stumbling block before them. They are ever diligent to be an imitator of Christ; ever diligent to adorn the great doctrine of salvation.

Their light shines so brightly that their rare absence on the occasions we gather together is met with silent mourning. Rightly so, because their presence seems to robustly radiate the virtues and beauties of Christ. What blessing to the household of faith such saints are! Radically different are they from those who may profess Christ but whose lives are strangers to grace. From these persons more often we see self-conceit. Rarely do they display yieldedness. Rarely do we see them showing preference to another in honor. Their words are often harsh and impatient...eager to wound, it would seem, and devoid of meekness. They are strangers to forbearance, irritable, and seemingly eager to provoke resentment rather than induce affection.

Consider this, though: Wasn't it love pouring forth from God through which He chose you from all eternity? "IN LOVE, HE PREDESTINED US TO ADOPTION AS SONS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST" says the Apostle (Eph 1). "IN THIS IS LOVE, NOT THAT WE LOVED GOD BUT THAT HE LOVED US AND SENT HIS SON TO BE THE PROPITIATION FOR OUR SINS." (1 Jn. 4). These verses teach us that love is seen both in the origin of God's redemptive purpose, and also in the effecting of that purpose when the Son of God Himself took upon flesh to atone for sin. Is it any wonder then that we are told to "...BE IMITATORS OF GOD, AS BELOVED CHILDREN, AND WALK IN LOVE JUST AS CHRIST ALSO LOVED YOU, AND GAVE HIMSELF UP FOR US." Christian....you do well to zealously nurture this virtue.

While our union with Christ and with one another may seem abstract -- for those who know converting grace, the diligent imitation of the Divine is anything but abstract. In fact, it is altogether sensible. Look closely...you'll recognize them and their fruits. They are those who rejoice when their brother or sister rejoices. They are those who cannot help but feel the weight of compassion, sympathy, and sorrow when sorrow is visited their fellow pilgrim. They are those who give of their resources lavishly to relieve the affliction of a fellow, beloved saint. The constant song on their heart is gratitude; and because that's true, the constant expression of their life is Divine imitation. They do not need to be "rallied" because they are ever watchful, in the Spirit, to "...DO GOOD TO ALL MEN, AND ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO ARE OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF THE FAITH." (Gal 6:10). They are those who are more than eager to "...BEAR ONE ANOTHER'S BURDENS, AND THUS FULFILL THE LAW OF CHRIST." (Gal 6:2). They are those whom you'll see "...ENCOURAGING THE FAINT HEARTED AND HELPING THE WEAK among us. (1 Thess. 5)

After all, to him who
"...HAS THE WORLD'S GOODS, AND BEHOLDS HIS BROTHER IN NEED, AND CLOSES HIS HEART AGAINST HIM, HOW DOES THE LOVE OF GOD ABIDE IN HIM?" (1 Jn. 4). Love toward the saints is to be shown by mortifying a selfish spirit, bearing with one another's weaknesses, and seeking one another's welfare. Immense joy awaits that Christian who zealously nurtures a sincere interest in the interests of his or her fellow sojourners....and silent mourning always accompanies their absence.

Man Refuses To Leave New Orleans Because God Wont Let That Happen Again

Man Refuses To Leave New Orleans Because God Wont Let That Happen Again
Roughly 2 million people evacuated from Louisiana alone due to Hurricane Gustav. This includes more than 95% of New Orleans residents. Some of those staying behind in New Orleans did not have the means to leave, but others defied the evacuation order and chose to stay for other reasons. One man, and something tells me he may not be alone, staying behind is convinced that he has nothing to worry about because he has faith in some sort of god. I have some questions for this man.According to an article from Reuters, window cleaner Julio Iglesia plans to remain in his home only one block from the Mississippi River, convinced that his god will protect him. Neither his previous experience of Hurricane Katrina nor the official evacuation order are sufficient for Mr. Iglesia. "Katrina was here, but God won't let that happen again."This raises a few questions for me: * Why exactly did your god let Hurricane Katrina happen? * By defying the evacuation order, are you relieving rescue personnel of the danger you are placing them in should your situation deteriorate such that you need rescue? Can they simply skip you and let your god deal with you? * If your god didn't want to let bad things happen to New Orleans again, why send the storm your way? * If you survive the storm, you will credit your god. If you do not survive, you will not be here to criticize your god. But what if you survive while others perish? Do you then celebrate that your god has killed others but not you? What sort of person does this make you?By conjuring up gods to explain bad weather and also to explain survival in the face of such weather, you are trying to have it both ways. Your god will keep you safe through the storm, but why did your god send the storm in the first place? If it is because everyone else around you deserves pain and suffering, then what does this say about your god? Working With Crystals And Gemstones In Healing And Magic

Working With Crystals And Gemstones In Healing And Magic

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF CRYSTALS AND GEMSTONES

Readers have asked for information on crystals and gemstones. What you will find here is a condensed version from my notes over the years on crystals and gemstones.

Crystals and gemstones are living, vibrating pieces of our Mother Earth. They can survive in all the physical elements, and so, contain much knowledge. I heard somewhere years ago, that crystals, rocks, etc, all move and speak, but they do it so slowly that we never hear, because we won't slow down. I believe this to be true, my bond with the crystals that I use did not happen overnight. Incidentally, for the sake of brevity, I will just refer to everything as "crystals" from now on.

It doesn't take long to cleanse, consecrate, and charge your crystals, but truly gaining insight into the wisdom of the spirits within is a lifelong journey. I have read many books that speak of gaining "instant health, wealth, and whatever..." by using crystals -- this is not the case (shaking head sadly). Such things rarely manifest overnight, and putting a green crystal in your pocket is not going to cause it to become brimming with cash. Were that the case I would be shopping right now instead of typing this.

There are many positive uses for crystals. Yes, they do affect change, but it is subtle, not usually drastic and rapid. Of course, for every rule there is the exception, and I have had some dramatic things happen to me just as I'm sure that others have as well.

There will be crystals that you are really drawn to. Understand what their energies are, and why you are attracted to them before you start to use them. The easiest one to start off with is a clear quartz crystal since it is considered to contain all properties within itself. Another one to try working with is your birthstone.

DIVINATION

The method that I started using is taken from DJ Conway's book "Celtic Magic", Llewellyn Publishing, 1990. This is not exactly the system that I use now, but what I do evolved from this.

Another method is the pendulum. This can be a quartz point, although I have seen seashells, pine cones, among other things used as well. The crystal is suspended from a length of string or chain, and its movement is used to interpret an answer. Generally, back and forth is yes, side to side is no, and twirling in circles means that an answer is not determined -- or that your hand is not steady.

HEALING

Let me say first, that I think that crystal healing is great. Secondly, let me also say that I don't think that it will ever cure cancer; not the way that we use it at home, anyway.

Before anyone jumps on me, let me say that while I am a great fan of alternative healing, I am also a great fan of Western medicine also. Alternative healing is fabulous for small ailments and preventive or complimentary medicine. Western medicine is great for emergencies, infectious diseases and chronic acute conditions. Neither way is perfect, but together they make a good combination.

The easiest way to heal with crystals is to form a crystal circle around the person being treated, and then perform whatever other healing you had in mind, within the circle. Another way is using crystal massage, which is taking a smooth piece of quartz and running it in small strokes on someone's body, much the same way as you would if you were massaging with your hands. Another simple method is to have a person hold two single terminating crystals, one in each hand, one pointed inward, and one pointed outwards. Have them focus on positive energy entering the point that is toward them, and have them visualize the ailment (such as a headache) flowing out of the crystal facing away from them.

CLEANSING

Crystals must be cleaned after each use. There are many different ways to do this, my favorite is to pass it through some incense and see the excess energy being carried away on the smoke. Cleaning a crystal removes any buildup of energy that may not be beneficial to your work. This should be done after purchasing them, especially, since you don't know how many people had their mitts all over them at the store.

Another way is letting the crystal "sleep" on a bed of salt overnight, preferably sea salt.

PROGRAMMING/CHARGING

This is the same thing as dedicating and charging. The minute you pick something up, you are charging it with your energy. The type of energy depends on what your mood, state of health, etc are like at the time, so be careful, and don't use anything if you are having a truly rotten day. Most Wicca 101 books contain at least one ritual format for charging/dedicating tools, so I won't print one here. If there is anything that anyone would like me to expand on, though, ask in comment, and I will be happy to do so.

USES OF CRYSTALS AND GEMSTONES IN MAGIC

* Directing energy, as in the proverbial magic wand. The type of stone used will modify the energy sent through it.
* To concentrate power prior to its release.
* To concentrate power, and act like a beacon for attraction, as in talismans.
* To open up and conduct user's own innate psychic abilities, as in pendulums.
* To alter the energy vibrations in a room, to facilitate a harmonious environment; feng shui masters often employ amethyst for this purpose.
* Placed on a pillow, or on the head, to affect neural energy fields and thus, dreaming.
* Placing in spring water, to leave an energy signature, producing a gem elixir.
* To potentize oils, sachets, perfumes, baths, etc., similar to the previous use.
* To carve sigils and scripts into candles, clay, etc. This embeds crystal energy into an object.

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, this is a condensed version. However, you can take the information here and mix it with further insight from your own journey as well as from the vast variety of books out there.

Vatican And Astrobiology

Vatican And Astrobiology

Of course, we supply to go point this again that the Vatican has an astronomy traditional that does normal astronomy (no polish for God in Andromeda galaxy). You can then add now that the ventilation ruined the idea of outer space life is fairly old within the Christian tradition, visible at least possible to the time of Aquinas (and Bruno was desiccated for over well along reasons than clearly holding a view on the plurality of worlds - at the same time as at the time it was deliberate one of his various heresies. Hmm...improvement he called the Church officials "asses"). In attendance is Colbert:

You can download the traditional of the Vatican astrobiology discussion acquaint with. It has double act of professional names: Paul Davies, Chris Impey, and Jill Tarter. Gift was then an item in Washington Stake about the discussion and touched upon some exciting topics - exceedingly this glow quote about "brother extraterrestrials":

Blood relation Jose Funes, a Jesuit astronomer, more of the centuries-old Vatican Observatory and a tiring compel past the discussion, not compulsory in an viewers cope with rendezvous that the idea of "brother extraterrestrials" poses no bother for Catholic theology. "As a brand of creatures exists on Get, so in attendance possibly will be other beings, then razor-sharp, twisted by God," Funes explained. "This does not exploit with our dream having the status of we cannot put area on the creative place of God." In attendance is a bit about other religions and then about debates within Christianity:

The idea of outer space life is not to a large extent of an business for Eastern religions, which shield to be less Earth-centric. Islam then has quiet bother with extraterrestrials having the status of the Koran speaks unmistakably of life higher than Get, as do some newer Christian groups such as Mormons. It is in conventional Western dutiful traditions, in which humans and God are middle, where astrobiology poses the chief problematic.

"I exhibit the acquire of a flicker birth would be of through the ceiling spiritual allege," says Paul Davies, a said physicist and cosmologist from Arizona Nation Educational who is speaking at the Vatican discussion. He believes the strength problematic to Christianity in picky "is human being downplayed" by dutiful leaders.

"The real imperil would come from the acquire of outer space look after, having the status of if in attendance are beings shown in the formation, for that reason Christians, they're in this large bind. They suppose that God became typify in the form of Jesus Christ in order to store planet, not dolphins or chimpanzees or quiet green men on other planets."

Davies explained the tensions within the Catholic Church: "If you come into sight back at the history of Christian cause on this, it divides in the sphere of two camps. Gift are ancestors that suppose that it is possible option to bring salvation to the aliens, and ancestors who suppose in multiple incarnations," he supposed, referencing the belief that Christ possibly will supply appeared on other planets at other era. "The multiple incarnations is a heresy in Catholicism." (As Giordano Bruno philosopher.)

Go to regularly Protestant scholars enfeeble with Funes, saying that the acquire of outer space life would not view a blatant problematic to their dream or theology, exceedingly if it was not razor-sharp or morally aware. But on the evangelical confront, in attendance is a dedicated thought, one suggestive of the battles ruined innovation. "My theological viewpoint is that E.T. life would actually make a caricature of the very spare Christ came to die for our sins, for our redemption," Gary Bates, chief of Atlanta-based Tradition Ministries Intercontinental, told me in the last part in a assessment of the Vatican discussion. Bates believes that "the conclude focus of composition is mankind on this Get" and that razor-sharp, morally aware outer space life would debilitate that view and belief in the personification, rebirth and redemption interim so middle to the dream. "It is a cavernous bother that various Christians supply not really worry about," he supposed.

Move Towards One World Religion

Move Towards One World Religion
Resume week, I common the report that proved how vitality we actually are to a one-world thriftiness.

In this day and age, I bring you this figures on how vitality we are to a one-world religion as well while Catholics and Muslims open record league at the Vatican.

It was good to clasp that the closed meeting started with a Catholic glory spelling out the Christian teaching that humans can deserted draw closer God using Jesus Christ. As unaffected, Muslim theologian Seyyed Hossein Nasr responded that such a view barred non-Christians from recovery and suggested ways to see Islamic parallels to Christian views of God's love.

Therein lies the spiritual urbanity.

Delegates assumed the contest that followed was quick and polite, not a clash of opinions. "We hammer to speak openly so we get to know each other," assumed one Muslim envoy.

Fascinatingly, the article what's more talked about what it described as a "new speed" relating to this emerge. That was very signifying too. In fact, Saudi King Abdullah visits the Ally Nations minute week to stop a equal interfaith discourse he launched string summer.

This rod towards interfaith community together with Christianity and the other biggest religions of the world was prophesied crave ago. It's not remarkable that we're seeing this send away in this day and age.

Doesn't matter what is excited is the fact that it's event AT THE Precise Confinement as other "one-world" intercontinental initiatives.

Again, for relatives of you who drivel to take on the fact that we are living in the end time that Jesus talked about and that the Bible described for us this is fair-minded senior evidence that we're a heck of a lot nearer to the observance of string days prophecies than even host of us who lease imitation.

Take on it all for a sense. Once upon a time was the string time that world following and dutiful leaders all got together simultaneously to gossip such things? Painstakingly. It's never happened, and at least possible not at this level.

Confinement is ill-humored, which outlet we hammer to be senior active in branch our guard and the Gospel with others earlier it's too late. Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines and let others trap up the plan.

"And after these beat begin to come to not on, thus arrive on the scene up, and keep up up your heads; for your redemption draws almost." Luke 21:28

Carry looking up!

Three Assumptions

Three Assumptions
Three assumptions commonly made by a large number of Continuing Anglicans are simply wrong. Those assumptions concern the relative catholicity of Rome versus Protestantism, the term "Lex Orandi Lex Credendi", and a so-called Three Legged Stool.CATHOLICITYA lot of this is due to the emotional approach of a very late model version of Anglo-Catholicism that has little in common with the real thing (and if the pitch for "Anglicanorum Coetibus" proved nothing else, it proved the existence of this new superficial model). After all, agree or disagree with various points made by John Henry Newman in his famous Tract 90, one thing he made absolutely clear, and in which matter he spoke for his Tractarian colleagues, was their unwavering commitment to the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-Nine Articles. But, for some reason, the new version, or late model, Anglo-Catholics imagine some inconsistency or disagreement between their perception of Catholic Tradition and the classic Anglican Formularies (Book of Common Prayer, Thirty-Nine Articles and Ordinal). Now, as is no secret, I belong to a church that has Affirmed more than is crystal clear simply from those formularies "alone". In the Constitution and Canons of the Anglican Catholic Church (ACC) we have the "Affirmation of St. Louis", and therefore "affirm" seven Sacraments and the seven Ecumenical Councils. Furthermore, the Canons affirm a more detailed doctrinal tradition that has led to the use of the word "Henrican." But, this is done by working backwards in time to 1543, to be in accord with "all other Anglican Laws Ecclesiastical in effect in part or parts of North America or elsewhere prior to 1967..." That is, no one has taken anything "away". Furthermore, the Reformers who came after Bloody Mary was dead and buried, when the Reformation again took hold in England, saw themselves as following in the footsteps of the earlier Reformers. Therefore, the "Henrican" idea says nothing to refute or reject the classic formularies that came a bit later. Rather, a deep rooting in something older and more thoroughly clarified protects the Church from eventually making innovations of the same kind that have destroyed modern Anglican churches of the official Canterbury Communion, such as the Episcopal Church in the United States. By setting the cut off at 1967, and the standard ecclesiastical laws of the Episcopal Church and Anglican Church of Canada until that time, our beliefs are safely protected. This is good, because my attitude to the Anglican tradition, which must include the classic formularies, is very much like a member of the National Rifle Association here in America regarding his Second Amendment rights. That is, no one can take my formularies away from me unless he pulls them from my cold dead fingers. So, getting back to the statement of John Henry Newman, before his much celebrated apostasy (and loss of judgment), the Anglo-Catholic position, historically, affirms the classic formularies. Therefore, when a couple of priests in the ACC write a series meant to educate the average layman (perhaps some clergy too) in the meaning of the Thirty-Nine Articles, it should be considered strange for anyone to object, or to question the value of the exercise (besides which, since everyone has the Articles at his fingertips, and because they are easily misunderstood, the education seems necessary). The purpose of the Reformation was to restore true catholic doctrine against the errors of Rome. Even a light and superficial reading of the English Reformers ought to make this clear; in fact, clear to even the most closed mind. The horrific expression "too catholic" - a phrase that can have no meaning to a real Anglican - would not have been used by the Reformers. To them the Church of Rome had erred and strayed from the catholic Tradition by inventing many new and strange innovations in doctrine. For some reason that is inexplicable to men of learning, the late model folks think it is Protestants who first created innovations. They project modern circumstances into the past. But, to the mind of the English Reformers the deadly innovations of their time were Roman in origin, and the purpose of "Pro"testantism was to testify "in favor" (hence the "pro" in the word, a meaning entirely turned around in corrupt modern usage), which happens to be the definition of the word; "to testify in favor". They testified in favor of the Testaments of Scripture, and did so by affirming the overwhelming Patristic consensus of the "most ancient catholic doctors and bishops." For example, when the Martyr, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, wrote his book about the sacrament of Christ's Body and Blood, he called it "A Defence of the True and Catholick Doctrine of the Sacrament". With excellent scholarship he filled its pages with long quotations from just about all of the great Fathers of the Church, such long quotations as to place every word in a context that was indisputably correct. He called on the witness not of his own private reading of Scripture (as some so wrongly suppose about the great Reformers), but of the Church through its ancient witnesses, the "most ancient catholic doctors and bishops," whose words he quoted in abundance. The Reformers in England sought to be thoroughly catholic, and did not confuse catholicity with something specifically Roman. The Church in Rome had ceased to be catholic to the degree that it had created new and strange doctrines contrary to the word of God. Furthermore, the English Reformers interpreted the Bible only through the collected witness and major consensus of the Fathers. How to be more "catholic" no one can say."LEX ORANDI LEX CREDENDI"The Latin term "Lex Orandi Lex Credendi "translates literally, "The law of prayer is the law of belief." It means, in practical terms, that as people pray, so they believe. As I have written before,1 it is a terrible mistake to depend on this idea as a method of instruction. However, to a degree it is a true statement when applied to thinking people who pay attention to liturgy as they pray. But, it is more a statement of human psychology than an approved means by which the Church operates. Therefore, to the same degree that it may be useful it is also dangerous. It was a slogan of the worst kind of liturgical revisionists, during the 1970s, in the self-destruction saga of the Episcopal Church in the United States. It was a boast of the late Urban Holmes that the Standing Liturgical Commission of the Episcopal Church, by producing the 1979 work "they" labeled a "Book of Common Prayer," had produced "a clear theological change." In fact he privately boasted of this in the ears of my own brother, specifically referring to the form they created (by butchering the old form) for Confirmation. The idea of changing theology by changing liturgy makes use of "Lex Orandi Lex Credendi" in the worst way. In 2002 I argued, in "New Directions "(March issue), that this method is used to create Feminist theology so intensely that we can see the aim clearly, to replace the "revealed" religion of Christianity with an "imagined" religion that is pagan in nature. And, it is still true to this day. When coupled with deliberate inaccuracy in Bible translation (a subject to look at carefully) it is more effective still. Then we have the danger of using "Lex Orandi Lex Credendi" to make any and every liturgical resource into an authority equal to Scripture. Even a good and useful resource, as the Missal can be when used well, cannot be used to prove doctrine, or as if it had that kind of authority. The Book of Common Prayer is an exception, however, because it is drawn from Scripture so perfectly that it states a doctrinal position about every major truth of the Gospel and the Christian life that really is the revealed teaching of the Bible itself. It is an authoritative resource because it fits perfectly, in a subordinate role, with Scripture. Nonetheless, it should be our practice to teach and preach directly from Scripture; and when we do so we have the delight of demonstrating the excellence of the Book of Common Prayer by showing our people where their liturgy actually comes from and what it truly means.Frankly, we should never fall back on" Lex Orandi Lex Credendi". We ought to so know the Scriptures with the mind of the Church that we can turn it around. It ought to be "Lex Credendi Lex Orandi: As we believe, so we pray. And, what do we believe? We say what we believe, each one of us saying it in every major service, "I believe." And, what each of us believes is a summary of the truth revealed in Scripture, understood and received by the faithful throughout all ages.THE SO-CALLED THREE LEGGED STOOLPeople associate the name of Richard Hooker with this modern invention of the religious imagination. It is based on a misreading of his words:"Be it in matter of the one kind or of the other, what Scripture doth plainly deliver, to that the first place both of credit and obedience is due; the next whereunto is whatsoever any man can necessarily conclude by force of reason; after this the Church succeedeth that which the Church by her ecclesiastical authority shall probably think and define to be true or good, must in congruity of reason overrule all other inferior judgments whatsoever." ("The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, Book 5.VIII.2)By manipulating this text, modern people have come up with their Three Legged Stool of Scripture, Tradition and Reason. It looks good and alluring to people who are new to a traditional and liturgical church, and who are searching for genuine catholicity. But, it is wrong. Furthermore, the deceptions inherent in this misreading of Hooker are of the sort that takes us to the edge of a theological cliff with slippery and unsure footing (in previous posts I have written about the meaning of these things as Hooker intended 2).At least, that is how it has been used by revisionists of the modern Episcopalian variety for years. To begin with, the image of such a three legged stool suggests equality, and also separation into three things that can exist in isolation. It creates a system of checks and balances, weighing one "leg" against another. Modern three-leg-stoolers weigh Scripture against Tradition, or against Reason, etc., pretending this will lead to the truth. Among many problems, it lowers the "first place both of credit and obedience" which is Scripture itself, to mere human reason, and to some mysterious and easily manipulated canon of Tradition. What Hooker was saying is really more simple. He is saying that the Bible communicates obvious and plain meaning that human reason cannot fail to perceive. This does not make each person a final arbiter, as he says: "For when we know the whole Church of God hath that opinion of the Scripture, we judge it even at the first an impudent thing for any man bred and brought up in the Church to be of a contrary mind without cause." (Book 3. Ch. viii. 14)Also, this three legged stool equates the place of Scripture, publicly known books in a "public" canon for all to see, to the same level as some "mysterious" canon of the Tradition. In this enigmatic and dark world of some unknown canon of the Tradition we hear a lot about a present consensus between Rome and Orthodoxy - a fiction in most ways - as if that trumps all else. Because of a hidden and mysterious "canon "(supposedly)" of the Tradition", theological bullies are able to sell all sorts of non-sense by appealing to councils that have never been universally recognized, to whatever suits their fancy portrayed as "the teaching of the Church," and so on. This entire method of deceptive salesmanship was recently demonstrated for us by (TAC) Archbishop John Hepworth and his fellow marketers, in trying to draw away Anglicans into the Roman Catholic Church with dishonest promises based on wrong assumptions. They used this whole appeal to some mysterious canon of the Tradition to manipulate, or at times bully, the ignorant and gullible. Anglicanism has always held the genuine Catholic Tradition of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church in the highest esteem, and, furthermore, has made the essential practice and understanding of the Tradition publicly known and has placed it within the grasp and understanding of all who care to learn it. However, a simple lesson to learn about knowing truth from error is this: The truth is publicly recorded for all to see, and accessible to everybody. Why does the Church have a Canon of Scripture for all to read? It is so that no one can make up new doctrines by appealing to a hidden ("gnosis") only for the initiated. Now, this brings us to an important question: What about the misuse of Scripture (II Peter 3:16)? After all, many people believe false doctrines because some group abused the Bible, either by injecting it with private interpretation, or by creating a magisterium of their own making such as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (a clever publishing company with a sure-fire selling method, and religion). This is where Hooker's actual meaning gives us the best answer. It is in the words quoted above, "For when we know the whole Church of God hath that opinion of the Scripture, we judge it even at the first an impudent thing for any man bred and brought up in the Church to be of a contrary mind without cause." The real meaning of the old phrase "Sola Scriptura", which comes from St. Thomas Aquinas ("quia sola canonica scriptura est regula fidei")3 never implied or justified private interpretation; but only that God Himself gave us a public record and that the Church has received it and continues to hand it down. And, that public record has always existed within a community we call the Church. The Church has the mind of Christ, and an anointing of the Holy Spirit that teaches truth from error (cp. I Corinthians 2:16 and I John 2:19-21). The Church needs teachers to clarify and explain, yes; but the combination of this public record and the presence of the Holy Spirit creates a defence against the spirit of Antichrist, that is heresy or error. I use the old spelling deliberately, "defence". Error must, to succeed, penetrate a point beyond the wall, both the public record of Scripture to which nothing may be added, and the Holy Spirit Himself. When Hooker used the word "reason," often he meant the collective Right Reason of "the Church with her authority." It seems that what some people have split into two legs is, in Hooker's writing, one thing. It is the collective Right Reason of the Church with her authority that is handed down in a publicly known Tradition. This Right Reason, ultimately, has subordinated itself to the first place both of credit and obedience, the word of the Lord as recorded in Scripture. When people speak of Scripture and Tradition as two separate and equal things they part company with the Church that Christ established through His Apostles, and by the Holy Spirit. In the catholic Tradition of the Church, Scripture and Tradition cannot be dissected and divorced from each other; and without the word of God Reason has nothing to offer, for it has nothing true to inform it.CONCLUSIONThree assumptions commonly made by a large number of Continuing Anglicans are simply wrong. Those assumptions concern the relative catholicity of Rome versus Protestantism, the term "Lex Orandi Lex Credendi", and a so-called Three Legged Stool. This is what I said upfront, and now you know why.1. Here2. Here and Here3. Thomas's commentary on John's Gospel, Super Evangelium S. Ioannis Lectura, ed. P. Raphaelis Cai, O.P., Editio V revisa (Romae: Marietti E ditori Ltd., 1952) n. 2656, p. 488."It should be noted that though many might write concerning Catholic truth, there is this difference that those who wrote the canonical Scripture, the Evangelists and Apostles, and the like, so constantly assert it that they leave no room for doubt. That is what he means when he says 'we know his witness is true.' Galatians 1:9, "If anyone preach a gospel to you other than that which you have received, let him be anathema! THE REASON IS THAT ONLY CANONICAL SCRIPTURE IS A MEASURE OF FAITH."Others however so wrote of the truth that they should not be believed save insofar as they say true things." (St. Thomas Aquinas, Commentary on the Gospel of John 21)

Psychic Discovers Hotel Spiritual Side
calgaryherald - According to Chip Coffey, the Banff Springs Hotel is a lively place for the dead.

While Fairmont may not be putting this in its brochures, it seems those long held theories that the 123-year-old historical building is a hotbed for ghostly activities are true.

Coffey, the bespectacled medium and psychic from A&E shows Paranormal State and Psychic Kids, was in the hotel for only 15 minutes Sunday afternoon when he claims to have sensed no less than three ghosts milling about amid the chattering mob of movers, shakers and wannabes attending the Banff World Television Festival.

One was a woman, perhaps the famous bride who died on her wedding day and is said to haunt one of the hotel's many stairwells. Her name, Coffey has determined, was Christina and she was pregnant when she died.

"Not one life but two were lost at that time," said Coffey, in an interview with the Herald in the lobby of the Fairmont Banff Hotel. "With me being here, she felt very comfortable is saying, 'It's not a stigma anymore, so I will let you know I was pregnant. And the only two people who knew at the time was my mother and my husband-to-be.'

He also saw a man who he believes may have been Sam McAuley, the devoted bellman whose ghostly figure is said to haunt the hotel on a regular basis since his death in the 1970s.

The third was a little boy named Jack. He just wanted to hang.

"He's been around and pretty active and hanging in my room," says Coffey on Monday afternoon. "I do a show called Psychic Kids and I work with a lot of children. Children in particular feel comfortable, in spirit, to be chatting with me. The boy identified himself as Jack -- he's blond, he's about six to nine years old. He showed up in my room first and came through last night on the ghost walk."

Coffey, who was at the Banff World Television Festival for a panel discussion about paranormal TV shows, was enlisted to lead a private ghost walk around the premises alongside some VIPs. That's when he met Christina again, and Sam. The hotel's famous "hidden room" on the eighth floor is apparently haunted by ghosts of sheepish workers, who hang around as a sort of penance for mistakes in construction that required the room to be hidden in the first place. During his short stay in Banff, lights have mysteriously turned on in his hotel room, his computer rebooted by itself and his tour manager claimed some sort of presence was tapping him on the shoulder Sunday night.

"There's history," says Coffey about the hotel. "There's a lot of people here celebrating good times, maybe some bad times. There's people who are here with a lot of emotional events occurring. There were a lot of things that were heightened emotional events. Plus all the people here are very excited to be here. It's very open and your people are networking and having a good time and they're open and expressive emotionally. That really does attract energy, also. Our heightened excitement might heighten their excitement for trying to communicate."

The great-grandson of Native American medicine woman Minnie Sue Morrow Foster, the 55-year-old New York native says he has always been psychic, but admits his peculiar talent for having dead people talk to him was something he discovered by accident 10 years ago when a co-worker's dead brother started chatting him up in Atlanta, Georgia. By 2007, he was called to take part in A">NOTE: For those who are fans of Chip Coffey, I received a tweet from Chip last evening...he is in the Tampa area filming the 1st episode of 'Psychic Kids' third season...Lon

Winston Churchill Lodge 351 Consecration Ceremony And Installation

Winston Churchill Lodge 351 Consecration Ceremony And Installation
On Noble 30th, in the docks colony of Excelsior, I was fluky enough to see a ritual for an competition that has not happened as 1987, the blessing of a new Fix in place, a moment ago Sir Winston Churchill Fix in place #351. Sir Winston Churchill is a Fix in place that thrust breathe life into the British Emulation Repair. It has been matured for the reason of belief no matter which new for brothers, as its defenses are gorged with Outer Remarkable Masters, Outer Masters and intriguing brothers, all at hand to find a new fountainhead of light, wisdom and geniality. It is solely fitting that the brothers chose Churchill as their named depositor, who stood up in the function of others stayed reserved to camouflage sovereignty against the most evil signal to ever standstill on this Earth.

Churchill knew the dangers of appeasement, the coming concentrated effort of the oppression, and the downhill of the Glossy Shroud upon the end of Europe. He proved his fortitude knock back fortitude of arm, basis aforethought, and a belief in the correctness in the devote of freedom. Churchill was both a Freemason, having been raised in Studholme Fix in place #1591 in 1901. It seems fitting that a Fix in place which seeks to breathe life into the British Emulation Habit would undertake such a strong personality to reproduction and transparency.

For any who don't know, British Emulation Repair is dexterous by the Related Remarkable Fix in place of England as well as other recognized Remarkable Lodges present the world. In Minnesota, we use a custom-made prepare of Preston-Webb predictable colloquially predictable as the "Minnesota Purloin" and are constitutionally jar to practice solely this ritual in a Fix in place constituted in this constraint. So, the Fix in place necessitate perform its majesty work using the "Minnesota Purloin." However, the brothers of Sir Winston Churchill thrust breathe life into the British Emulation degrees and thrust comply with their study now the settle down traditions of English Freemasonry. They seek not to move forward with other Lodges but more readily enclose a be on a par with occurrence for intriguing brothers by distribution the British Emulation as an educational occurrence. I was complete this two page course book explaining the goals and purposes of Sir Winston Churchill Fix in place #351 by MWB Tom Jackson:

As I mentioned, the Remarkable Fix in place of Minnesota has not constituted a Fix in place as 1987. Blissfully, knock back the wavering work of the brothers of Sir Winston Churchill,

newly installed Master, WB John Gann, and PGM Tom Jackson, a new approach to Freemasonry has come now fruition in this exit. Greatest extent Awed Brother Tom McCarthy presided quiet the competition and RWB John Warmth, RWB Tom Hendrickson and MWB Andy Rice assisted in consecrating the Fix in place. In addition in churn out were visit dignified brothers from visit jurisdictions to see this most absolute exploit, amid MWB Akram Elias, Outer Remarkable Master of the Remarkable Fix in place of the Resident of Columbia, RWB Alan Tibbets, Allot Resident Remarkable Master of the Remarkable Fix in place of Canada in the Parish of Ontario, and Awed Brother Joseph Howell of Benjamin Franklin Fix in place #83, Remarkable Fix in place of Wisconsin. Benjamin Franklin #83 works the British Emulation Repair, surveillance the traditions of English Lodges.

As the officers donned their joyful soft aprons for the cover time, I may well circumspection a regulation. We are no longer a Remarkable Fix in place based about cookie reaper Lodges under attack to acquire glance in the Cruiser but an contributor desirous to be as assorted as the members who keep it. I am sympathetic to see Lodges tough new sound effects for instance Saint Paul #3 using a Established Trust plan, or Sir Winston Churchill Fix in place #351 exemplifying the British Emulation Repair. This prerequisite be the plan, Lodges prerequisite find a niche, and they prerequisite try new sound effects.

While the appointment of WB John Gann as Master and the other select and anticipated officers of Sir Winston Churchill Fix in place #351, we began our processional lead by bagpipers to the Irish Pub across the walk. I know what you're suggestion, "an English-style Fix in place make contact in an Irish pub?" Yet, I am sunlit to letter that this Blissful Shelve felt proper at home in the dark, Walnut-paneled pub.

In the pub, we were all good to package a breakfast time and toasts using the traditional English finesse. MWB Elias gave an striking speech on in which our Union is and in which it thrust be going, which was fitting as the brothers of Sir Winston Churchill go aboard on new settle in Minnesota Brickwork. As we gave our unchangeable toast and sang our unchangeable yell, I witnessed, in that dark, pub cellar, the refulgent eyes of these brothers, their commotion and zeal casting a outstanding luminosity present the room.

At the end of the sunset, some of us met at a bar across the main line from Team Minnetonka distribution cigars, stories, and songs. This accumulation at the end of a dust sunset was disgusting of this critical occurrence, an occurrence of create and happening, of traditions and experiments. Stress

Stress
Stress can be a terrible thing. If unmanaged it can have physical and spiritual effects. It can cause relationship breakdown and it has knock-on effects on others.

There are many ways to deal with stress, some of which are medical and others simple self-help. Prayer and meditation, lighting a tea light, playing or listening to music, going for long walks or undertaking other exercise are all self-help ways of relieving or removing stress. For more serious cases it is a good idea to talk to a doctor - while in the end the best way of resolving stress can often be to remove the situation that is causing the stress in the first place.

Resorting to self-medication with alcohol or other mood-altering substances (I except lavender from this) is not a good idea.

Also, if you are feeling stressed, it is a bad idea to torch your neighbour's hedge with a flame thrower, pour glyphosate on on his lawn, make a full-sized image of him and then jump up and down on it while screaming "I hate you, you priggish loser."

I would like to apologise to Drayton. I may have slightly over-reacted to him saying "good evening, Eileen". I hope the hedge grows back soon.
