Rights And Duties

Rights And Duties
"With the release of the first of a trilogy of films based on Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged", the "philosophy" which her work teaches is once again getting more attention than it ought to deserve. Since I've known Christians who admired her books, it is perhaps important to once again point out the incompatibility of "Objectivism" with just about any religion, not only Christianity. Greg Forster describes a big problem in "Rand and 'Inalienable Rights'":

.... If there are no duties transcending the will, there really are no such things as either rights or duties - no such thing as morality at all, as that concept is understood by almost all people. There is only rational calculation of what will most efficiently gorge whatever appetites happen to occur to us. The calculation of optimally efficient gorging of appetites will often coincide with the constellation of traditional ethical injunctions not to kill, steal, lie, etc. But it will not do so always, and even if it did, that would not make efficiency in the gorging of appetites a moral virtue.

This is one of the (numerous) gaping holes in the center of Rand's view of life. Her famous formula is that you should not live for anyone else's sake, nor demand that anyone else live for yours. But if there are no duties transcending the will, as she insists there aren't, why should you not demand that others live for your sake? The value you place on your own life does not, in fact, create a moral duty to treat the lives of others as "intrinsically" valuable. And it is not, in fact, the case that the optimally efficient gorging of my own appetites always coincides with the traditional constellation of ethical injunctions not to kill, steal, lie, etc.....

There can be no safeguard for "the rights of the individual" if we begin with a moral philosophy that excludes the existence of any "rights" worthy of the name.

Rand believed that ethical egoism and metaphysical reductionism could be squared with political liberty.

Thomas Hobbes knew better. [more]Rand and "Inalienable Rights" >> First Thoughts A First Things Blog

Controversies And The Metaphysics Of Mind By Dr Yaron M Senderowicz

Controversies And The Metaphysics Of Mind By Dr Yaron M Senderowicz
SINCE ANCIENT TIMES, METAPHYSICAL THEORIES HAVE BEEN SHAPED BY THE DIALECTICAL RELATIONS BETWEEN METAPHYSICAL POSITIONS. THE PRESENT BOOK OFFERS A NEW ACCOUNT OF THE ROLE OF CONTROVERSIES IN THE EVOLUTION OF IDEAS IN CURRENT METAPHYSICS OF MIND. PART ONE DEVELOPS A PRAGMATIC THEORY OF METAPHYSICAL CONTROVERSIES THAT COMBINES KANTIAN THEMES AND THEMES FROM CURRENT ARGUMENTATION THEORY. THE THEORY DEVELOPED IN THIS BOOK UNDERSCORES THE ROLE OF A UNIQUE TYPE OF DIALECTICAL ARGUMENTS WHICH ESTABLISH METAPHYSICAL POSITIONS AS CONTROVERSIAL RELEVANT ALTERNATIVES IN THE EVOLUTION OF CHAINS OF DEBATES IN METAPHYSICS. IN PART TWO AND PART THREE, THIS THEORY IS APPLIED TO CHAINS OF DEBATES IN PRESENT DAY METAPHYSICS OF MIND WHICH ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND PERSONAL IDENTITY. ONE OF THE CONTENTIONS DEFENDED IN THIS BOOK IS THAT THE INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF METAPHYSICS IS NOT A PROCESS IN WHICH POSITIONS ARE REPLACED BY OPPOSITE POSITIONS, BUT RATHER, A HISTORY OF THEIR STATUS AS RELEVANT ALTERNATIVES. THE BOOK ANALYZES IN DETAIL AND DEMONSTRATES HOW PROGRESS IN CONTEMPORARY METAPHYSICS OF MIND CONSISTS IN A DIALECTICAL PROCESS THROUGH WHICH CHALLENGES TO EXTANT POSITIONS LEAD TO INNOVATIVE ALTERNATIVES THAT ARE INTRINSICALLY RELEVANT TO ADVANCING THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ISSUES UNDER DISCUSSION.

Pagans On Memorial Day

Pagans On Memorial Day
For Pagans, the celebration of Memorial Day is one that says a lot about our history, whether we realize it or not. I did not take it into account myself, until I read a short piece in the Minneapolis Examiner on Pagans and Memorial Day celebrations. The most obvious way that this relates to us is the hard won religious freedom that we enjoy as Americans. In most recent history, we remember the large amount of effort, and sudden support by non-Pagans, to have the Pentacle included in the VA's list of approved religious symbols for tombstones. The piece also so aptly points out that Pagans in the early part of the movement stemmed out of the counterculture of the '60s and '70s. So, while we honor the memories and families of fallen soldiers, both Pagan and non-Pagan, we also see the maturing of our movement to one with a multitude of viewpoints and modes of practice. Please do remember to honor the fallen soldiers, and send out a prayer for the families left behind as well. This short piece can be found here.

The Psalms And C S Lewis Lewis Nods

The Psalms And C S Lewis Lewis Nods
*

When I became a Christian I was soon very confused indeed about the central place of the c. 150 Psalms in worship.

Why on earth should these apparently "pre"-Christian, ancient Jewish, poems or songs take-up such a very large amount of Christian worship?

*

Why, indeed, did Psalms apparently constitute "almost the whole of Christian worship" in ancient times?

(Especially before there were any Christian scriptures, but even much later. Some of the most devout and spiritually advanced Saints seemed barely to read the New Testament: knowing the basic Gospel story plus praying the Psalms seemed to be almost their whole devotional life.).

*

Why did some ancient monks sing them eight times a day, some modern monks four times a day, and even ordinary Anglicans twice a day?

Why are priests supposed to read the Psalms once a month, why are monks supposed to chant all of the Psalter "every week for their whole lives"?

Why did so many people in the past learn the Psalms by heart?

*

The first thing I did was to read C.S Lewis's "Reflections on the Psalms".

Lewis, in this book, is at his most Protestant and least Catholic - and he firmly regards the Psalms as a record of ancient Jewish hymns by diverse hands, to be interpreted in their historical context; and at most providing reminders and correctives of specifically Christian ideals.

He did indeed alert me to many good things about the psalms - but the answers he gave did not even "begin "to explain why, much less to justify, the psalms should have taken up "so much "time and effort from Christians for at least three-quarters of the span of Christianity.

Even if everything positive which Lewis has to say about the Psalms was absolutely correct and that to the fullest degree - then the implication is that "surely "(if that is all there is to them) Christians could find something "better" to focus upon - something actually Christian?

*

The answer, I later discovered, is that traditionally Christians have regarded the Psalms as (in essence) a "part of the New Testament", being uttered "by and about Christ".

This is, of course, the original Orthodox and Catholic way of reading the Psalms, and the way which persisted over many, many centuries.

In a nutshell, the Psalms were always regarded as prophetic utterances; divinely inspired among the ancient Jews but revealing their true meaning only after the incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

*

Lewis swiftly disposes of this in a chapter on Second Meanings, and seems to conclude that this effect is only apparent; mostly merely a "reminder "of what happened some hundreds of years after the Psalms were composed.

Thus I have come to regard Lewis's book on the Psalms - for all its good nuggets - as perhaps his only fundamentally "mistaken" book - the only one in which he reasons like a modern Biblical scholar instead of forming a bridge to pre-modern wisdom.

Yet Lewis's actual practice was wiser than his understanding - he prayed the Psalms, frequently; he knew them by heart.

In sum, Lewis actually did, 'despite' all the reasons he gives "which imply that it is not worth doing this", learn, read and speak the Psalms through - many, many times - for his whole adult life.

And there is a lesson in "that".

Ignatius Of Antioch On The Structure Of The Early Church

Ignatius Of Antioch On The Structure Of The Early Church
Called to Communion has a great post up exploring what St. Ignatius of Antioch said about the structure of the Church in his seven letters. Ignatius was the second bishop of Antioch from about 70 A.D. to 107 A.D., when he was martyred for refusing to worship the emperor. And his letters are "chock full" of (1) references to the three-fold structure of the Church (bishop, priest/presbyter, deacon); (2) instructions to obey your bishop; and (3) a recognition that each city had only one bishop.

I. ARE BISHOPS THE SAME AS PRESBYTERS?

All of this is really helpful to note, for two reasons. First, many Protestants argue that bishops and presbyters are different titles for the same office, because the Bible is less than clear on whether it's one office or two being described. At least part of this confusion stems from the fact that bishop, presbyter, and deacon mean "overseer, elder," and "server," respectively, and it's not always clear when they're using "overseer" as a formal title, and when it's just as an adjective. Ignatius clarifies any confusion about the structure of the Church, by referring to the bishop and the presbyters of the Magnesians by name:

"Since, then, I have had the privilege of seeing you, through Damas your most worthy bishop, and through your worthy presbyters Bassus and Apollonius, and through my fellow-servant the deacon Sotio, whose friendship may I ever enjoy, inasmuch as he is subject to the bishop as to the grace of God, and to the presbytery as to the law of Jesus Christ, [I now write to you]."This is from Chapter two of the Epistle to the Magnesians. If you pay careful attention, this passage also offers one possibility for why the Bible sometimes seems to treat bishops and presbyters as interchangable. After all, Magnesia apparently has a total of one bishop, two presbyters, and a deacon (although, of course, it's quite possible that there were more that Ignatius never met). It's certainly not unthinkable that in the earliest days of the Church, a single individual was the only ordained priest in a city with a small Christian population, serving both as both priest and bishop.

In fact, in nearly every letter Ignatius writes, he instructs the faithful to obey their bishop (singular) and the presbytery and the deacons. I'm not going to go through all of the evidence, both since it gets repetitive quickly and because Called to Communion does, but other than his epistle to the Romans (which we'll get to below), Ignatius hammers this theme constantly. Whenever a church starts to go astray, he says, essentially, "Obey your bishop!" He also notes that in his absence (since he's been arrested), Syria is without a shepherd other than God Himself. It couldn't be much clearer that there's a single bishop in charge of each city.

II. WAS ROME RUN BY A GROUP OF PRESBYTER-BISHOPS?

But the second point of confusion that this lays to rest is this notion, created in recent years, that in the early Church, everything was run by a body, the presbytery. This argument specifically comes up in regards to Rome. One of the cleverest attacks on the notion of the papacy is that while Rome may have been pre-eminent in the early Church, She was run by a group of presbyters in college, not by a single bishop supported by presbyters. Keith Mathison argues for it on page 51 of "The Shape of Sola Scriptura":

Although Rome traces the origin of the papacy to the Apostle Peter, the historical evidence indicates that there was no monarchal bishop in Rome until sometime between A.D. 140-150 [footnote 5]. Instead of a single bishop, it appears that the Roman church was organized under a college of presbyters of presbyter-bishops. No evidence exists for any claims to jurisdictional supremacy by Rome in the first century. The first historical instances of Roman bishops claiming any type of jurisdictional priority outside of Rome occurred in the late second and early third century.Mathison's really making two points: the early Church at Rome had a two-fold structure, and Rome wasn't in charge. The book which Mathison is citing in footnote 5 for the first of these points is "Antioch and Rome", and it's pretty good, from what I've read of it. It treats the Church Fathers seriously, although far too much is read into silence, and the notion that the early Church had a two-fold structure isn't very supported. Still, it's worth hearing what the authors of "Antioch and Rome" say of Ignatius' letter to the Romans (on page 202 of their book):

Ignatius' greeting "to the church that presides in the chief place of the country of the Romans" is more fulsome and laudatory than that to any other church. The Church of Rome is "worthy of honor, worthy of felicitation, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of holiness." [...] In particular, it is a church "preeminent in love" (see also 2:2, 3:2), a church that has never been jealous, indeed a church that has taught others (3:1).All of this is true, and irrefutible, from Ignatius' letter. So already we see Ignatius being surprisingly deferential to the Church at Rome. The reference to the Church at Rome as one "which presides" at Rome is frequently misread as if Ignatius is saying it "resides" at Rome. He's not. He's saying that the Church at Rome is "RUNNING THINGS "from Rome. That's a claim to Roman primacy. So is the idea that Rome is Church which is "preeminent in love." Recall Christ's instructions for leadership in Luke 22:25-27, and you'll see that Ignatius is saying that they're leading "lovingly", as they're called to do. Also, in John 21:15, the commission of Peter is tied to the fact that he loved Christ more than the rest of the Apostles did -- as many commenters have noted, this establishes in no uncertain terms that Petrine leadership is to be done in love, not through blunt force. So when Ignatius says that Rome is "preeminent in love," these words should also recall Christ's: "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these? [...] Feed My lambs." Finally, Ignatius recognizes that they're already instructing other churches. The authors of "Antioch and Rome" get what's going on, at least partially. On page 165, they say of Rome:

Any Christian community (especially a preeminent community with an apostolic heritage) may have had the right in Christ to correct another community, but in fact Rome seems to have exercised this right more frequently than any other church of the period and seems to have felt that such an exercise was expected. [...] One can never discount the possibility that the church of the capital city of the empire felt some responsibility for Christianity throughout the empire; but the chief source of Rome's care is more likely to have had religious rather than political roots. So they acknowledge that Rome has an apparent role of religious leadership in the early Church (although they stop short of, and indeed reject, that this is jurisdictional primacy, since the authors are both liberal Catholic priests). But they argue that Rome, and Rome alone, "still" has presbyter-bishops at this point. And their arguments on this point are remarkably weak. First of all, they concede the argument in part I of this post, that Ignatius attests to the three-tiered structure of the Church:

Instead of a group of prophets and teachers, we find a clearly delineated three-tier structure of hierarchy of one bishop, a group of presbyters (the council of elders or presbyterion) and a group of deacons (e.g. "Magnesians" 2-3).

Clearly, the bishop is "the" leader. Without him, nothing is to be done, no rite is to be celebrated, including baptism and the eucharist. But then they try and argue that Rome is the exception. Why? Two reasons. First, in Ignatius' letter to the Romans, "No single-bishop is mentioned in Rome, probably because the church still had the twofold structure of presbyter-bishops and deacons." (page 202). They repeat this argument from silence on page 163:

Indeed, the signal failure of Ignatius (ca. 110) to mention the single-bishop in his letter to the Romans (a very prominent theme in his other letters) and the usage of Hermas, which speaks of plural presbyters (Vis. 2.4.2) and bishops (Sim. 9.27.2), make it likely that the single-bishop structure did not come to Rome till ca. 140-150.But then they make the polar opposite argument in a footnote:

As Meier has shown (p. 77 above) to explain Ignatius' insistence on and defense of the threefold order, one must posit that the single-bishop model appeared in Antioch and

Asia Minor ca. 100. In the period under discussion

Rome shows itself slow to accept innovations.

So if Ignatius mentions a three-tiered structure, this must mean that nobody believed in it, and he has to "defend" it, and if he doesn't mention a three-tiered structure, that must mean it didn't exist in that city. So no matter what he says or doesn't say, we can thus conclude there were presbyter-bishops. That's pretty terrible scholarship. After all, if Ignatius only wrote about the three-tiered structure to defend the notion of this novelty, we'd expect to see him ONLY write about it to Rome, since apparently only Rome didn't practice it. Why would he be convincing the Christians who already agree with him, and then not bring it up to the Christians who don't? Anyways, here's a much better conclusion from the facts:

* Ignatius mentions, but doesn't defend, the single-bishop structure. That is, he recognizes it exists in the context of telling rabble-rousers in the churches he's writing to that they need to obey their bishop. Nowhere does he attempt to defend the idea that there are three tiers, he simply assumes his readers know it's true -- his emphasis isn't "there are three tiers," but "you need to obey all three tiers."
* He doesn't give this exhortation to Rome for two obvious reasons. First, they're already obedient: he makes this clear. Second, unlike his other letters (which are encouraging the churches to obey their leaders), the letter of Rome is to thank them for their support on his way to martyrdom. It reads almost nothing like the other letters, because the theme and tone are totally different.
* Ignatius mentions the single-bishop structure to the Romans, but doesn't defend it. Namely, he says in Chapter 2 of his letter, "Pray, then, do not seek to confer any greater favour upon me than that I be sacrificed to God while the altar is still prepared; that, being gathered together in love, you may sing praise to the Father, through Christ Jesus, that God has deemed me, THE bishop of Syria, worthy to be sent for from the east unto the west." In Chapter 9, he says, "Remember in your prayers the Church in Syria, which now has God for its shepherd, instead of me. Jesus Christ alone will oversee it, and your love [will also regard it]." So he is treating the Romans as if they already are acquainted with the idea of having a single bishop.

This doesn't require any absurd mental gymnastics, or any far-fetched conclusions from silence, the way that the conclusions in "Antioch and Rome" do. That leaves the last bit of evidence in favor of "presbyter-bishops," that "Shepherd of Hermas "refers to bishops, plural. This is true, but irrelevant. The section deals with the global Church, and everyone believes that there are multiple bishops throughout the Church.

CONCLUSION

Given this, let's go back to Mathison's two claims: (1)the early Church at Rome had a two-fold structure, and (2) Rome wasn't in charge. The first of these isn't true, as we've seen: there's not any good evidence that Ignatius is innovating here; in fact, the overwhelming weight of the evidence is that he's not. Ignatius even says himself, in Chapter 3 of his letter to the Ephesians, of the single-bishop structure of the Church:

"For even Jesus Christ, our inseparable life, is the [manifested] will of the Father; as also bishops, settled everywhere to the utmost bounds [of the earth], are so by the will of Jesus Christ." (c. 3)So Ignatius is writing about how this is the global characteristic of the Church. And we're to believe that this was some novelty he'd crafted, and that it wasn't practiced for another generation in Rome, the center of Christianity? That explaination doesn't hold any water. The second of Mathison's claims, that Rome wasn't in a position of authority, is also false, and here, "Antioch and Rome" is instructive, since it draws out the fact that Ignatius viewed Rome as the presiding Church, preeminent in love, and teaching other churches. Nope, Ignatius attests to a global three-tiered structure in existence as early as the beginning of the second century. And Ignatius is a student of the Apostle John: we can trust that he isn't intentionally perverting the structure the Apostles created, nor is he ignorant of what the structure of the Church they established is. So if Ignatius says the Church has three tiers (and he does, over and over again), we can believe him. Finally, if you're interested in reading more about what the Church looked like in the time of Ignatius, you should check out Called to Communion's post.

Ofsted Report Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry

Ofsted Report Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry
INSPECTION JUDGEMENTS:THE ACHIEVEMENT OF PUPILS IS SATISFACTORY.Pupils at Hogwarts have access to a reasonably wide range of esoteric qualifications, suited to its key demographic. As an independent school, it does not have to follow the National Curriculum closely; however, it is disappointing to note that basic requirements such as English, Mathematics and Religious Education are all lacking or entirely missing from the school's syllabus. This has had adverse effects on all students, many of whom have never even been taught basic KS1 or 2 literacy. A few students have attended state or independent primary schools, and these students typically perform very well in contrast to their peers. The majority of students appear to be under-performing, with most pupils struggling in all their lessons, most of which appear to be set at too challenging a level. One particular class, which seemed to be based on A-Level chemistry, proved too difficult for even the most proficient students. Only one pupil managed to complete the lesson objectives, mainly thanks to his use of an annotated text book. However, certain subjects appear to be either very short-term, or far too easy for the majority of students. An outdoors lesson was observed where students made very little progress over several lessons, simply performing the same repetitive tasks again and again, counting and feeding small maggot-like creatures. Clearly the curriculum requires an overhaul to bring literacy and numeracy levels up to the appropriate level for such a prestigious establishment.Extra-curricular activities are well-established at the school, with chess clubs, animal care groups and 'duelling clubs' all vying for popularity. There is a definite sense of social responsibility among some students, with evidence of a student-led campaign to get the canteen workers more breaks and holiday time. The school library is underused, and often totally empty. The librarian has no idea why this is the case. The sixth form is indistinguishable from the main school, as the students all remain on to study to the age of eighteen. The subjects offered remain the same, though with more rigorous examinations. End of KS4 results are generally average, whereas end of KS5 results this year were disrupted by unforeseen and external events. Students typically go into government posts, journalism or remain unemployed.THE QUALITY OF TEACHING IS UNSATISFACTORYTeaching at Hogwarts is generally very old-fashioned and lets the students down considerably. Lessons are formulaic and, other than the occasional impressive display of skills from teaching staff, are dull and lifeless. Lessons all too often revolve around tedious rote-work and use of text books. The study of History is particularly poor, with very little teacher interaction and no group work of any kind. Students were frequently found to be asleep during these lessons and, on one occasion, the teacher was also sleeping at their desk. Clearly this is not good enough, and suggests that Senior Leadership need to have far more rigorous CPD in place for struggling teachers, alive or dead.Teachers have very high expectations of their pupils - often far too high for their age and ability. Again, during chemistry, the teacher was seen to display entirely unfounded expectations of a Year 7 class who could barely keep up with his description of various chemicals, poisons and antidotes. Students in this class were often punished for their lack of prior knowledge after knowledge harvests - a worrying trend that the SLT need to counter as soon as possible.Assessment for Learning is not well implemented at Hogwarts school. In fact, students seemed only rarely to be given assessments of any kinds, and homework tasks are often over-long and irrelevant (usually essay based). Starters and plenaries are very rare, and usually students enter classrooms with a genuine fear of what they may be expected to achieve. As such, the pace of learning is very slow in most subjects - most notably chemistry, biology, PE (which seems to disappear after Year 7) and charms.THE BEHAVIOUR AND SAFETY OF PUPILS IS UNSATISFACTORY Frankly, the quality of safety provision for students at Hogwarts is totally unacceptable. Despite having a highly qualified, capable and over-worked school nurse, many severe and significant injuries have occured in recent years. The main sport played by the school, entirely internally, is incredibly dangerous and should be reviewed by the HSE immediately. Several injuries from wildlife have occured in recent months, with trees and large flying animals usually to blame - these hazards are not successfully monitored or kept safe by any member of staff other than the groundsman. This kind of Health and Safety brief is not usually in the remit of a groundskeeper, and it is our recommendation that more staff are drafted in to help with this task. There have been several deaths in recent years, all on site. The recent loss of the previous headteacher was a severe blow to the school's reputation, and many parents have removed their children from the premises. The headmaster's death went entirely unexplained, though rumours that a pupil murdered him are almost certainly hyperbole. The death of a Year 12 student during an international competition was also kept from the newspapers, and the effects are still being felt across the school. This summer, the school was disrupted by riots and pitched battles between rival sectors of the community. Whether the school was an incidental victim of this outburst of aggression, or an active part of it, is unknown to the inspectors. Siginificant damage was wreaked on the school buildings, with certain wings now closed for repairs. In short, at present Hogwarts is a very unsafe environment for all students and staff.Behaviour of students is very poor indeed. Staff seem to maintain their grip on the school using threats of violence, and yet student disruption is at high levels. Most of the worst behaviour seems to be focused around one particular 'house' within the school's pastoral system, but despite this clear correlation, no positive action has been taken. Bullying is a very common occurrence and is not dealt with very well by the pastoral team, which consists of some of the strictest staff members in the school. Often the bullying between students can become physical aggression very quickly, with some students causing each other actual bodily harm. The bullying of students by staff is at unacceptable levels, with some students singled out from an early age for grudges that seem to date back decades. Most of these issues stem from the high levels of insular relationships that form in the school, between staff and pupils. Much of this stems from the unsatisfactory usage of a house system, which seems only to make the students more insular. Cross-house friendships are very rare and often mocked by other students, and even staff. Looking at the records, the House Championship has been corrupt for some time, with clear preferential treatment given to some houses over others.THE LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT OF THE SCHOOL IS SATISFACTORYUntil his death, the previous headteacher had a very strong reputation in the local community and had steered the school through some difficult times. However, accusations of favoritism dogged his career, and his lack of investment in quality teaching led to some very poor staff choices, including the appointment of unskilled staff for Divination (a spurious subject that has no academic rigour) and the constant poor selection of teachers for the difficult role of Defence Against the Dark Arts (a PSHE subject). After the headteacher's death, the school was run by the Chemistry teacher, rather than the established deputy. The reasons for this are unclear, but it is certain that it had a detrimental affect on the school and its students. Middle management is a tier that seems not to exist, with the headteacher taking sole responsibility over every aspect of the school. This is not an efficient model, and it is recommended that the school create a new tier of management to help the headteacher with his workload.HOGWARTS SCHOOL IS AWARDED A GRADE OF 4 (UNSATISFACTORY)

What The Bible Says About Christmas Keeping Christ In Christmas

What The Bible Says About Christmas Keeping Christ In Christmas
KEEPING CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS BY LARRY BURKETT Larry Burkett on Keeping Christ in Christmas It irritates me when I see Christ being taken out of Christmas. That is not limited to only non-Christians - even Christians have adjusted to the commercialism of the holiday season. Obviously, not all of it is bad - in fact the holiday season provides the opportunity for families to reunite and also provides a pleasant break from our routines. I personally look forward to these days as an opportunity to visit with friends who are much too busy at other times in the year to just stop and relax. But we have become terribly imbalanced. We give a myriad of useless gifts at Christmas because it's expected of us and we feel guilty if we don't. The commercialized world now makes a 100.00 toy seem perfectly normal. It's easy to observe the stress that our imbalanced society places on family members. Christian parents who cannot provide the latest indulgences to their children are often depressed and distraught. Obviously, no one purposely makes them feel unworthy or insignificant, but the overwhelming emphasis we place on giving at Christmas certainly does. So great is this social pressure that the closer we get toward Christmas Day, the more depressed and unworthy those who can't indulge feel. Unfortunately the pressures don't end once Christmas is past either. Those who can't afford to compete in their gift-giving often dread congregating with their friends immediately after the holidays, because at "show and tell" time they don't have much to show. It is not a conscious act on the part of most people to openly display their pride. Rather, because we are in a competitive society we often determine a person's worth by his ability to buy things. "FOR YOU HAVE DIED AND YOUR LIFE IS HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD" (COLOSSIANS 3:3). BALANCE One extreme is not balanced by going to the opposite extreme. The distortion of Christmas won't be corrected by eliminating all gift-giving and observing Christmas as a "religious" holiday. The fact is, we do live in this world, and our families are greatly influenced by others. What we need to do is swing back toward the middle and eliminate the need to compete with others. Then we will have the freedom to develop God's plan for our families without the pressure from the commercial world. In order to do so, I believe that as Christians, we must first believe that God's plan is different from the world's, and is more - not less - fulfilling. It is a deception to think that by adopting a more disciplined lifestyle we are somehow denied the "good life." It's like saying that by avoiding, we deny our children the euphoria that would make them feel "good." But to decide that any and all are evil and absolutely refuse to use them makes for a painful experience if you have to have a broken leg set. The key, as always in God's plan, is balance. That always comes from following God's wisdom. SHIFT OF ATTITUDES Gift-giving at Christmas is a relatively new idea. Until a couple of centuries ago, Christmas was reserved as a religious holiday on a noncommercial basis. Many of our forefathers would have believed that trading presents on the day set aside to observe Christ's birthday was near blasphemy. However, gift giving became a generally accepted practice and was used primarily to show appreciation to loved ones. Gifts were usually simple, regardless of the means of the giver so as to not embarrass those who couldn't afford to give very much. For a long while in most countries, gifts were exchanged on New Year's Day (not a bad idea today-think of the great buys you could get!). Christmas gifts were limited to food for the poor or special gifts to pastors and missionaries. As with most things that start out right, somewhere along the way the direction shifted. By the early twentieth century, families were exchanging simple gifts, usually handmade, on Christmas Day. Certainly there was really nothing wrong with that, except that under the growing influence of secularism it was a golden opportunity for Satan to divert our attention from Christ to Santa Claus. By post-World War II, Santa was the spotlighted figure at Christmas and December was the calendar month for retail sales of all kinds. How did it happen? It would seem apparent that Christians aren't as wise in the things of the Lord as non-Christians are in the things of the world. The secular world is always looking for ways to shift attention from God to material things, and we're naive enough to go along. By the time we realize that our whole direction has been diverted, as it has been at Christmas, we believe it's too late to change, so we give up. "FOR ALL THAT IS IN THE WORLD, THE OF THE FLESH AND THE OF THE EYES AND THE BOASTFUL PRIDE OF LIFE, IS NOT FROM THE FATHER, BUT IS FROM THE WORLD" (1 JOHN 2:16). WHAT TO DO? By anyone's standard, the way Christmas is celebrated today is a gross commercialism of the most important birth in history. But we don't need to preach to the unsaved world to put Christ back into Christmas. They shouldn't; we should. One thing I learned a long time ago in counseling is not to try to overcorrect too quickly. Not only are past habits, such as overindulging at Christmas, difficult to change, but quite often others around us don't see things just the way we do. If you attempt to stamp out all Christmas gifts suddenly, you'll end up with a revolt on your hands. The correct way to is make some positive steps to establish a better balance. Step 1: Stamp out Santa Claus. Christian parents should let their children know that Santa is a fraud. Santa's harmless you say? Not so, when parents knowingly deceive their children about an apparently omnipotent being who travels the world in the wink of an eye and disburses presents on the basis of good or bad. It may be a small matter, but it is a place to start. Step 2: Husband and wife should pray together and agree on a reasonable amount of gift-giving. Once you have reached a decision that you feel is God's plan for your family, don't get caught by Satan's condemnation as Christmas approaches. The pressure to buy when everybody else is buying will be difficult to resist unless you absolutely agree. And again, I repeat, don't overcorrect. Develop a balanced attitude that will accomplish your goals over the next few years. One method that has proved successful to many families is to commit an equal amount spent on gifts to feeding the truly needy. In many areas of the world, an amount equal to most of our gift purchases would feed and clothe a family for several months. By giving to a specific family through a Christian organization, your children can see the purpose and value of your sacrifice and theirs. "AND WHOEVER IN THE NAME OF A DISCIPLE GIVES TO ONE OF THESE LITTLE ONES EVEN A CUP OF COLD WATER TO DRINK, TRULY I SAY TO YOU HE SHALL NOT LOSE HIS REWARD" (MATTHEW 10:42). Step 3: Stamp out credit. As bad as commercialized Christmas is, commercialized Christmas on credit cards is even worse. Many families literally indenture themselves to creditors for a whole year just to buy some useless junk at Christmas. As Christians, we need to decide if we really serve the God of the universe. If so, then He knows our needs and will meet them through His people without indebtedness. I know that some of the people reading this have desperate needs. I also know that others sincerely want to help but don't know who has needs. The use of credit allows those who have needs to temporarily buffer themselves from God's real source. "AS IT IS WRITTEN, 'HE WHO GATHERED MUCH DID NOT HAVE TOO MUCH AND HE WHO GATHERED LITTLE HAD NO LACK'" (2 CORINTHIANS 8:15). I believe Satan has used credit cards to cheat God's people out of blessings and to keep them in the bondage of debt. WHY BOTHER? With all the other important issues to deal with, such as crime, abortion; a logical question would be, "Why bother with such a minor issue as gifts at Christmas?" Because gift-giving is one area totally under our control, and like the Easter bunny, it is leaven that Satan sprinkles in the church. The practice of giving gifts is not the problem, just as the use of credit is not the problem. It is the misuse of these things that entangles us and diverts attention from Jesus Christ to material things. We have enlisted in God's army and now we can't identify the real enemy. "NO SOLDIER IN ACTIVE SERVICE ENTANGLES HIMSELF IN THE AFFAIRS OF EVERYDAY LIFE, SO THAT HE MAY PLEASE THE ONE WHO ENLISTED HIM AS A SOLDIER" (2 TIMOTHY 2:4). Our problem is that we keep trying to negotiate a compromise with an enemy who is totally dedicated to destroying us. It's time that, as Christians, we decide to draw a battle line again. When it comes to commercializing Christ's birth or resurrection, we need to establish a balance. Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17 This material was taken from the book "Using Your Money Wisely" by Larry Burkett. Religion Belief Nothing Up My Sleeve
"HI SISTER. DO YOU KNOW WHO IS THE PATRON SAINT SHOWN HOLDING A GIANT SAW, I THINK THE LONG KIND USED BY TWO PEOPLE ON EACH END FOR SAWING DOWN TREES? I SAW IT IN A PAINTING."Yes, I do. Unfortunately, I can't tell you much about him.I believe you are asking about St. Simon Zelotes, aka St. Simon the Zealot. He was one of the Twelve Apostles. For a minute there, there were two Apostles named Simon. Then Jesus changed one Simon's name to Peter. I'm sure it was because "Peter" means "rock" and "upon this rock, etc.", but it must have cleared up a lot of confusion and possible embarrassment."Who ate the rest of the loaves and the fishes?""Simon.""No, I didn't.""Thomas says he saw Simon do it. He only believes what he sees.""It wasn't me.""I didn't mean it was you. It was Simon.""I'm Simon.""Then Who is on first?""What?""What is on second."You can see the problems that would cause. In any case, other than some name confusion, we don't know much about St. Simon the Zealot. His legend as a preacher has him in all parts of the known world of the time, including England, or what would become England. His death was by crucifixion, or peacefully in his sleep, or he was cut in half by a giant saw in Persia. Hence his depiction in art with the giant saw.Whenever you see a depiction of a saint in art, whatever the saint is holding tells you something about the saint. St. Apollonia, the patron saint of toothaches, is holding a giant pair of pliers because that was how she was tortured. St. Peter has a cross that is "X" shaped, the instrument of his death and the other St. Simon, whose name was never changed has the giant saw, even though there is no evidence of any kind that he actually died that way.It does make for a great looking painting, though. And a handsome statue. The bigger mystery is this: why is St. Simon Zelotes the patron saint of tanners? He should be the patron saint of vaudeville style magicians. The kind that saw a lady in half.

Sharon Watkins Preacher For Inaugural Prayer Service

Sharon Watkins Preacher For Inaugural Prayer Service
I hurriedly posted a message this morning before church about the Obama choice of Sharon Watkins to give the sermon at the Inaugural Prayer Service (January 21st). I wanted to reflect a bit more on this choice, because I think it's an important one. Like I said earlier, much has been made of the choice of Rick Warren to give the invocation at the inauguration. People try to look at choices like this as augurs of the future. People wondered whether the Warren choice signalled a rightward turn on the part of Obama, ignoring the fact that Joseph Lowery, a progressive civil rights leader had been chosen to give the benediction.

This prayer service has a long history -- dating back all the way to George Washington's time. Now, whether this choice is more important than that of the invocator or not, or what it means for understanding the President-Elect's theological proclivities, I can not say. I can say, I understand why he would have been impressed by her. She is a person who can draw people together in a way that leaves people with a sense of hope and purpose.

Sharon became General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in July 2005 at our Portland General Assembly. In many ways her ascent to this position came as a surprise -- she was after all the pastor of a medium sized church in Oklahoma. She wasn't part of the bureaucracy nor had she been a Regional Minister (our equivalent to a diocesan bishop). But we were ecstatic at the choice. In her inaugural sermon she gave us a sense of vision and hope for the future. And the Disciples, who had been in decline for some time finally had a sense of vision, and we're seeing gains.

Sharon brings to this service a heritage that affirms freedom, diversity, and unity. As the reports of this choice have pointed out, she's not well known. That's not surprising -- you have to be a TV preacher or a big time author to get much attention. The Disciples are a relatively small denomination, though we count among our number three former Presidents, James Garfield, Lyndon Johnson, and Ronald Reagan. Yes, Ronald Reagan may have been hanging out with Presbyterians in the last decades of his life, but his roots are definitely Disciple. With Obama in need of a new church home, we are, of course, hoping he'll choose the Disciples. Despite our lack of name recognition, Sharon is an important figure in her own right. She was, after all, the first woman to lead a Mainline Protestant denomination.

Now, I don't know Sharon personally. I've met her and I've heard her speak and preach on several occasions, but I don't think that counts as knowing her as a person. But, I can say that I'm friends with her father, who taught for many years at Christian Theological Seminary. I have great regard for Keith, so, I know where she comes from. It's good stock!

So, as we reflect on this choice, let me say again that as Disciple pastor, I am thrilled by this choice. I also think America will be pleased and blessed by this choice, for she is a voice of inclusion and grace -- and that's something we need to have in this day and age!

Hail To All Things Bright And Beautiful
Every year on the morning of the winter solstice, I rise before dawn (an extreme rarity I can assure you), and sit outside in the cold. I pour a glass of orange juice into my chalice and sip it slowly, toasting the return of the light. Before me is a big juicy orange, cut into two that mimics the solar globe peaking above the horizon. The crows squawk at me. They're probably suspicious and wonder what could stir me so early.

As I sip my juice in silence, I think of the bright promise that this year will bring. So much joy has come into my life already that it is almost unimaginable. But I will not limit myself. This morning, I remind myself that I am worthy. That the bounty of the gods and the joy they bring is limited only by the barriers I put up around me. Why would I not ask for joy and prosperity? Why would I not ask for all things bright and beautiful? When we join the gods in cooperation, when we co-create with them, we find that we are deserving of all that we desire. When I ask for more, I have more to give to you. We can all stand in power, because there is plenty of power to share.

From all things bright and beautiful, the Child of Promise is born. The Great Mother spills her blessing upon the Earth and we are showered in a celebration of sparkling brilliance. The light is limitless and fills all hearts. It spills over the sides and kisses all things.

There is room in my circle for you. There are cakes and ale and laughter and I have plenty to share. Will you accept this gift?

Women Men

Women Men
WOMEN VS. MENBy: Michelle Hass (in conversation with Scott Szakonyi"Ok folks, Loki and I have been chatting, and we're ready to raise a ruckus that might go on for months."Chiniginish and I relish the challenge...with Coyote looking over Our shoulders and chuckling... "Here's the question: Are women superior to men, and if so, why? I THINK that women are superior to men in the modern world because evolution is lagging society. Most of the evolution of the human race (about 60 million yrs) took place in hunter/gatherer tribes, where aggressive behavior on the part of the male hunters was a survival trait, and relating/caring behavior was a survival trait for females. Now, in the 20 thousand or so years since we have become agrarian, the need for male hunter aggressiveness has gone the way of the Dodo, while the need for relating/caring behavior has become primary. Where does this leave us? "Well, as I see it, women are almost ideally suited to the overcrowded, communication intensive environment that we call modern society. Men, on the other hand, are like people with no arms playing handball. It's not that we're bad folk, it's just that we were designed by evolution for an environment that hasn't existed for 20 THOUSAND YEARS, which is a real drop in the bucket in terms of evolution. Evolution isn't going to be giving us any help for at least a few million years; maybe never since we are constantly screwing up the gene pool with our wars that leave the genetically defective to breed and send the genetically preferable off to evolutionary dead ends. So all we men can do is try to better ourselves and ask for patience on the part of women, who must feel like the entire male sex has completely missed the boat. "Well, you've got a nice point, but it assumes something that I believe 'taint necessarily so. Is male aggressiveness part of nature or nurture? The jury seems to be coming back from a long period of deliberation, and it looks like the verdict is NURTURE. This very nicely dovetails with my own theory of what thelemites refer to as the "procession of the aeons". In Crowley's notorious Liber Al vel Legis, we are said to be passing from an aeon of belief in suffering male gods and patriarchy to an aeon of belief in the value of Self and of partnership between the sexes. Crowley called the old aeon the "Aeon of Osiris" and the new the "Aeon of Horus, the Crowned and Conquering Child." The enthroned Child is not masculine or feminine, but androgynous/gynandrous. The aeon before the Osirian was that of Isis, an aeon of Great Mother Goddesses and matriarchy. My chronology is a little different than that which Crowley attributed to these three epochs of human history so far. Crowley declared that the Aeon of Horus began with the Spring Equinox of 1904+ Common, just before the writing of the Book of the Law. I maintain that the change is still taking place, and had its roots in the 1700s+ Common. The writings of the philosopher Locke were some of the first to make a very important quantum jump, and provided ideological impetus for the vital changes that have and are taking place. What Locke asserted was that government did not rest on Divine Right, but on the consent of the governed. Human beings were not born to different castes, some fated to serve while others were fated to rule by the grace of the gods. Human beings were born equal, and had certain rights as a birthright: Life, Liberty, the right to pursue Happiness, and the right to security of private property. This assertion shows up in Liber Al as these statements: "Every Man and Every Woman is a Star. ""Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law. ""Love Is The Law, Love Under Will. ""Thou hast no right but to do thy Will. "In a little less arcane language, these statements run thusly: Every Individual matters. Every Individual has the right to live, be free and pursue Happiness (harmony with one's life's purpose, or True Will) as they Will. These rights stop at the boundary of the Wills of others. Live your life as you see fit, but mind your own business and above all, HARM NOBODY. This includes yourself in a very conditional way. You *do* have the right to self destruction, but if you truly believe that you matter, why would you want to? These assertions are usually encountered firstly in a Locke-inspired document that has passed into the history of this country, the Declaration of Independence. If there is any one document that is a trigger point for the New Aeon, it's that one. The American Revolution was the first time monarchy was cast aside in favor of democracy of a representative sort.Democracy was tried before, but never quite this way. And despite several course corrections that needed to be made, (the abolishment of Slavery, the giving of Women, Blacks and Amerinds the right to vote) and some that still need to be made (the granting of total equality for all races and sexes, a shift to a more direct method of participation, i.e. Cyber-democracy) the democratic experiment in the United States is the most enduring of all. Before the 1700s, government was imposed from above, not thought of as flowing from the consent of the governed. Individuals were not accorded rights as a birthright, but were granted rights by the king, usually on a class-by-class basis. Human beings were dealt with as masses and classes, on a Collective basis. Coincidental with these developments was a surfacing of hermetic thought in a more widespread way then ever before in history. The Rosicrucian and Freemason movements brought hermeticism to a wide audience. Within the ranks of Freemasonry were both common and noble, and often commoners would be lodgemasters in lodges frequented by those of noble birth. Hermetic orders ennobled not by birth, but by level of knowledge and initiation and (hopefully) by level of spiritual attainment. Now, this was fine in theory, but unfortunately in practice things weren't so swift. It was only until the mid-1800s and groups like the original Golden Dawn that women had the possibility of initiation. Even now, in Masonic lodges that have lost their occult focus and are now little more than men's clubs, men are ritually strip-searched to assure the initiator that the candidate is indeed male and not a disguised female. The baggage of the old days of sexism and classism remain in a lot of hermetic orders even today. Crowley himself had serious problems accepting women as equals: he had a rather low opinion of them and was quite cruel to them in numerous cases. But very explicit in the message of the New Aeon is that people are to be dealt with, not by sex or race or social strata but by their inborn, inalienable rights as individuals...as Stars, to use a thelemic term. The Neo-pagan movement was a definite evolutionary step in defining a New Aeon mode of spirituality. Unlike the traditional hermetic order, Wicca and other forms of Neo-paganism do not have a multiplicity of ranks and a chain of command. Some have three degrees, some two, some only one, that of initiate. Initiation is not a bestowal of rank, but more a purpose-oriented process. As magickal orders continue to evolve, they will either need to emulate more and more the informality and non-hierarchical non-structure of Neo-paganism or choke on their bloated hierarchies. It is funny when one considers that there is much evidence to suggest that Neo-paganism evolved from the Astrum Argentum and the OTO, and that much of Gardner's groundbreaking work in reconstructing the old pre-Osirian Druidic religion was helped along with the research help of Uncle Al himself. Perhaps, as the knightly orders of the past were meant as guardians of the Christian Church, there will become a symbiotic connection between Neo-paganism and Magickal orders, especially among those whose non-structure mimics that of the coven. Arguably this symbiosis exists now, and hell, I'm living proof of this. So what the deuce does this have to do with the sexes? You'll see as I wrap this up. Ok...remember I mentioned that before the Osirian epoch and the patriarchy, which seems to have come in with the rise of the big cities and the transformation from a hunter-gatherer society to an agrarian one (methinks you have placed the transformation a little too far into the past) there was the Isian epoch and the matriarchy? Well, before patriarchal philosophy displaced matriarchalism, women pretty much ran things. They didn't hunt because to place women, who were the living image of the Goddess and the ex-nihilo creatrixes of the next generation, in bodily jeopardy was literally blasphemy. Women were the intermediaries for men to the Goddess, who was unapproachable otherwise. The men had their hunting cults, but they were as insignificant in reality as the Victorian-era anthropologists misread the ancient religion of the Goddess as merely an inferior "fertility cult." When the transition came to the cities and to patriarchy sometime around 10,000- to 7,500- Common, the long-suppressed males took by force what the Goddesses of the Isian era denied them by their divine decree...power. Male warrior deities replaced female mother deities. The priestesses of the old religions were destroyed. (The Book of Joshua in the Old Testament is a vivid account of one triumph of Osiris over Isis.) And the new order began. But the old matriarchal religions survived for several thousands of years after the turn of the aeon, and it is painfully obvious that the old patriarchal ways will haunt us for thousands of years into the future, even as new ways take hold and new philosophies become more accepted. But it really is nurture rather than nature that makes men aggressive and women passive. Men can learn to be nurturing and loving, and women can learn to be assertive and empowered. In order that we can truly enter this new aeon where all are leaders and all are Stars, we each have to cultivate the "other side" of our Selves. No, women are not superior to men, nor is it the other way around. Every Individual matters. Everyone has the potential to be a King, in the thelemic sense of the word. We need to learn to treat all with dignity, be they material successes or abject material failures. We need to treat even those still enslaved by the old with as much dignity as those who have declared their secession from them and their embracing of the New Law. The evolution is really and truly in our own hands. Beauty and balance, Will and Love, Michelle. The coven that I've been working with in Denver begins its cup blessing by a dialogue between the Priest and the Priestess. Both have a hand each on the athame and the chalice: Priest: "Be it known that a man is not greater than a woman. Priestess: "Nor yet is a woman greater than a man" Priest: "For what one lacks" Priestess: "The other can provide" Priest: "As the Athame is to the male" Priestess: So is the cup to the female. Both: And when conjoined together, they become one in truth, for there is no greater magick in all the world than that of love. BB Rowan
