My Prayer Room Story

My Prayer Room Story
Though the She Speaks conference has turned out to be the spiritual highlight of the year for me, it didn't come without a price. There's always a cost, isn't there?Friday night's speaker evaluation was quite possibly the most intimidating moment of my life, simply because speaking is the the last thing on earth I desire to do. Truly. When I sensed the Lord nudging me to begin speaking at the beginning of the year I thought, "Surely You must be kidding." I'm a writer. I like writing; it gives me time to think, backspace, delete or just start over. Then I thought, "Maybe I'm just making up the speaking thing. Maybe I'm imagining one of those worst-case scenarios my brain seems compelled to create. Like when I'm driving over an impossibly high bridge on a freezing day and I try to figure out if I could get my window open and unbuckle my seat-belt and swim to the shore without freezing in the event my car plunges over the guard rail."Finally, the Lord accosted convinced me while I drove one afternoon, (not over a bridge) and I surrendered, uttering a simple yet incredibly brave one-sentence prayer: "Lord, if you want me to speak, please confirm it." Two days later my laptop slid to the floor when I saw my name on Lysa TerKeurst's blog as a scholarship winner for She Speaks with this post. But still, months later as I cried on a comfy bed after the She Speaks speaker evaluations on a Friday night in Concord, North Carolina, I couldn't help but think "I do not want to speak. God, why are you making me speak?" Furthermore, my body betrayed me when I "did" speak. I could do without the internal earthquakes and the Niagara Falls armpits, thank you very much. My comfort zone had not only been imposed upon, it had utterly vanished. Saturday morning found fresh tears on my cheeks. Another speaker evaluation loomed like a pistol-waving terrorist only inches from my face. After choking down a few bites of breakfast, I hurried to the prayer room for some desperately needed spiritual fortification. And there He was. My Prince of Peace. My courage. My strength. The lover of my soul. And the One through Whom I can do all things. A beautiful prayer warrior named Charlotte whispered, "Would you like to pray with me?" Heads bowed, hands clasped together, we prayed. God showed Charlotte a few things, and she shared them with me. And just like that, everything changed; my perspective, my countenance and most of all, my heart. I left that prayer room equipped with His grace and His joy, which is my strength. And I suddenly realized that I was walking, with Him, toward my destiny. How about "you"? Do you have a prayer room story? I'd love to hear it!

Part 3 Jerik First Spiritual Mentor

Part 3 Jerik First Spiritual Mentor
"This article is the work of Nicolette Stevens, also known as Sylviana and as Lady Jasmine. The source of this material is paraphrased from Jerik Daenarson himself, both in person and through recorded interviews that took place in 2001. This essay is the third chapter in a series telling Jerik's life story and history in the Pagan community. If you didn't read part one and two, you can find them here: "

"Part 1: Jerik's Early History and Conversion to Paganism "

"Part 2: Jerik's Early Spiritual Influences "

PART 3 - A FIRST SPIRITUAL MENTORDuring his high school years Jerik briefly became a part of the Air Force, in which he served and underwent basic training for about two months. He was then given an honorable discharge and sent home, having gone through basic training and been found psychologically in-adaptable to military life at the age of 17. He later thought of his military experience as something that proved to be the big gym class in Texas, which he had gone to as a way to avoid being with his parents.

Upon returning he was a student at North Vista High School in Riverside California. He signed up for an art appreciation class, looking mostly for an easy class to pass. At the first class meeting in walked a teacher by the name of Dean Strong, with piercing blue eyes and a marine crew cut, almost like that of an eastern monk with a nearly shaven head. Jerik's hope of an easy class went out the window but his curiosity grew, as the teacher began his introduction. He said "This is going to be the toughest class you ever took. I'm going to teach you to not only see colors, but to see their auras. I'm going to teach you about symbols and art..." and went on charismatically about the subject.

A student who was more familiar with the teacher interrupted him and asked excitedly if he was the same Dean Strong who was an all American football player, and the teacher answered "Yes, but that was a long time ago." Jerik noticed that the way he answered the question was soft and almost humble, certainly not what you would expect from a big well known jock, and that the teacher seemed to almost shine with an aura of light around him.

Dean Strong became Jeriks favorite teacher, and had always shown him kindness and wisdom. It came to pass one day that Jerik had another parting of the ways with his parents, and so when he hit a troubled spot and was basically trying to run away from home, he went to ask his teacher for advice. The teacher told him that he could not officially help him, but invited him to come to his ashra. There, Dean introduced him to his wife, who lived in a separate house. Jerik started to realize then that there was something really strange about this teacher's life.

"What's an 'ashram' "? Jerik asked him. The teacher responded "A Spiritual Center". Jerik started to notice pictures that were on display, and asked Mr. Strong if they were pictures of him. The teacher went on to say "Yes, I like to think of them as images of my slain former selves." They were an unusual and dramatic display. He had been a carrier fighter pilot in the Korean war, and an all American football star, but had experienced some kind of deep spiritual conversion. He then studied in India and Tibet, lost over a hundred pounds, became celibate and vegetarian, and walked an eastern path that leads to Buddha-hood and the overcoming of Maya. Dean Strong had also studied at the Bauhaus in Germany, where he developed his knowledge of art and symbolism. It was this man with his wide and varied experiences who exposed Jerik to the idea of the evolution of the spirit and the true evolution of a person.

When talking about working with the friend and teacher he went to stay with, he tried to convey just how different this was from anything he had been exposed to in his young life. "I'm a big blond Norseman. I like broadswords, burgers and blonde's at this time in my life, and also redheads and brunettes. It's awfully alien for a Viking to be dropped off at the ashra and told that he has to touch the tip of his tongue to the roof of his mouth and vibrate in the following fashion, and my legs don't even bend that way..."

Yet, Jerik needed to be someplace other than the home of his parents, and felt safe and comfortable with the charismatic teacher who became a marvelous friend to him. He remembered with awe that he had a magnificent library and meditation center, filled with statuary of the eastern Buddha and other spiritual figures, and a domed skylight overhead that filled the room with light from above. It was there that Jerik learned about Yoga and different styles of meditation. He had also never fasted before, but Dean put him on a melon fast for several days to help purge his body of toxins, as well as having him try the sauna for its cleansing steam and benefits of relaxation. He taught him about Prana Yoga breathing exercises, and several disciplines of meditation. He studied with the man for only a little while, but got a great deal out of it.

In the end he came to the realization that it wasn't his path, but he tried. It was the beginning of his study in eastern philosophy and meditation, which consisted of several disciplines of yoga and the reading of esoteric and eastern texts that always had an aim towards the evolution of the spirit and going beyond the wheel of karma. Jerik found Dean Strong to be a very marvelous and transcendental man, but also discovered quickly that this wasn't his path, that he could not walk in Buddha footsteps. He did however respect the path, and he respected the man who was teaching him so many things about spirituality and life. Dean got Jerik started on the turn inward part of spiritual evolution, where we learn not only to look in the external world for our symbols of deity, but we start looking within.

This teacher also got him interested in other ideas as well that he had not previously been exposed to, such as astral projection and other spiritual phenomena. Dean spent a lot of time in meditation, and seemed to be able to do things that other people could not or did not know how to do. The spectrum of his knowledge was far reaching. Even in teaching art appreciation at school, he exposed the students to ideas that were new for them, by doing things like teaching them techniques to see auras around the paintings they studied. Some of the ideas Dean had resonated deeply with Jerik and gave him a spiritual foundation that was different than that of his parents and family. Jerik said that he credited his very nurturing Great Aunt and Great Uncle with starting him on the path, and then his teacher Dean Strong as his first real spiritual mentor.

"( This article is part of an ongoing effort by Jerik's friends, family, and students; to create a proper memorial for him and preserve his stories and writing as he wished. Cody Allison and I are working on this along with other friends, and would be happy to include material and memories by others who had a connection to him, and to his tradition which was called Southshire. Please feel free to contact either of us to share your comments; memories, class notes, experiences, and any other writing from Jerik that it may be shared in honor of our friend. Thank you, Nicolette Stevens. ) "

On Devotion

On Devotion
When we're talking about theological issues, it helps if we define the words we are using. "Devotion" gets thrown around frequently in religious discussions - but do all the participants mean the same thing when they use that word? Since I've been in a deconstructing mood of late, let's see what Dictionary.com has to say on the history of the word:

"early 13c., from O.Fr. devocion, from L. devotionem, noun of action from devovere "dedicate by a vow," from de- "down, away" + vovere "to vow," from votum "vow" (see vow). In ancient L., "act of consecrating by a vow," also "loyalty, fealty, allegiance;" in Church Latin, "devotion to God, piety." This was the original sense in English; the etymological sense, including secular situations, returned 16c. via Italian and French."In old Latin the "devotio" signified a ritual of self-dedication to the Gods of the Underworld, as Jona Lendering explains:

"The ritual itself was simple. The pontifex maximus said the prayer, and the general who dedicated himself repeated it, leaning on a spear, and dressed in a toga. With the toga over his head ("Gabine fashion"), the commander rode to the enemy. If he survived, he was never to perform religious acts any more; if an ordinary soldier had dedicated himself to the Underworld and had survived, a statue with a height of seven feet had to be buried instead. One such statue has been excavated in the country of the ancient Vestini, at Capestrano in the Abruzzi."When Rome became a monarchy, the word devotio was used to describe the self-sacrifices for the well-being of the emperor. A notorious example is the story of Publius Afranius Potitus, who promised to commit suicide if only the emperor Caligula would recover from an illness - the emperor insisted that the man would indeed descend to the Underworld."Lendering mentions Greek antecedents (notably the story of King Leonidas at Thermopylae), and suggests Carthaginian King Hamilcar's death at Himera in 480 BCE while making an offering to Poseidon was a similar sacrifice. What seems clear is that this myth and this kind of ritual/ritualized death for one's community was likely found throughout the Mediterranean and much of Levantine. The "cinctus Gabinus" described above was associated with sacrifice and worn by Roman emperors in their office as high priest. And according to scholar Andrew Feldherr:

"The enemy are afflicted with terror wherever the consul rides, and when eventually they kill him, their fate is sealed. The consul's body is always buried under the thickest pile of weapons and corpses and so cannot be found until the next day."How many of these details accurately reflect early Roman religious practice remains uncertain.[15] The idea of charging a man or beast with the impurities of the people and sending it off to exert its destructive influence among the enemy possesses many analogues, from Hittite sacrificial practice to the legend of the Trojan horse.[16] However, Versnel has argued that what has become the archetypal form of devotio actually evolved from the more widespread but somewhat less dramatic practice of invoking the gods' power by making over to them the lives and property of the enemy.[17] But whatever the actual authenticity of Livy's description, the act clearly possesses a special significance for his text. The historian explicitly justifies his inclusion of the details of the ritual in terms that remind us of one of the cardinal aims of his history: he has preserved the tradition of an archaic Roman practice into an age when native religion has been supplanted by foreign rites"In time "devotion" came to be a synonym for the zeal and ardent desire required to offer oneself up in such fashion (Classical Latin used the word "studium" to describe such eagerness - and yes, that is related to "studere" and our English "student." Medieval Latin lost that distinction). "Devotionals" provided a way by which one could bring the sacred into one's daily life through meditation and prayer. "Devotees" came to mean enthusiasts, not sacred vessels "cum "spiritual bioweapons.

Within that meaning-slippage we can see many of the changes between the pre-Christian and Christian worldviews. Even before putting on the cinctus gabinus the "devotio" was one set apart, one who is not only willing to die for the Gods but willing to die at their hands. The "devotio "offers up body and soul for the tribe, striking a deal in order to preserve the nation and community. It is a perfect offering, one which gains its power by its terrible price.

Christian models for devotion preserved that idea of self-sacrifice but wiped out nearly everything else about the ritual. The office of "devotio "was subsumed into the new office of "martyr" but that crown was reserved for those who died for Christ. Those who fought for other Gods were devil-worshippers and fanatics whose bravery was a sign not of their goodness but of their innate bestial corruption. "Studium", zeal, became the new ideal: the interior life became more important than the outward sign of the consul wearing the trappings of the scapegoat.

(As an aside: It's not for nothing that the Christians also pushed for monopolistic control on outward signs of the Divine, or as they called them, sacraments).

This is not to say that the use is "wrong." I'm hardly arrogant enough to think I can erase two millennia of lexical history. Nor would I deny that there has been much good, as well as much evil, done in the name of Christian devotion. But I think it may behoove us to consider again the majesty and terror of the cinctus and the spear and the holy words by which one gives up everything so that your people might live. It might help us to remember the difference between those things which we deeply enjoy and those things we might be willing to die for. From the Kenaz Filan Blog http://kenazfilan.blogspot.com

Celebrating The Esbats

Celebrating The Esbats
Recurrently, an Esbat is enormous by triumph together with a coven or a few friends and high regard the God and in addition to having crescent cakes and wine afterwards. Of course, for solitary people (DRAW UP TO ME) that's not what happens at all. Esbats are a good time to arrangement a ritual (SEE THE RITUALS PAGE FOR POINTERS ON HOW TO ARRANGEMENT ONE). A ritual to pet name the God can be twisted, looking at Her in the context of the joystick of the day. For casing, if it is join Mabon, the God is a bit aristocratic momentous equally Her lover is dying and She is the same expectant. This is more exactly a bit manifest from the Maiden God at Imbolc, at whatever time She is olive and ingenuous, and more exactly manifest from the abundant, corpulent, forceful and sexual God that represents Beltane and Litha; one would not drive somebody mad these other aspects of the God with Her dark Crone wall at Samhain either. Particular people opt not to groove Esbats as if they are in context with the Sabbats, equally they believe that the way you believe of the God must not be directed by what the God is doing; as you may know, countless Loam religions keep in shape aristocratic heavily on the female aspect than the male and would ill will having the God deliberation of in conditions of the God's life course. Nevertheless, I see the God and God as spot on the whole of origination, and if my world is developing colder as winter approaches, I'm departure to groove softly manifest than if I am in the heat of summer.

A Sincere prevalent thing to do on Esbats is to work magick. Particular people talk about the Esbats the best time for magick (AND IN SOME PERSONAL BELONGINGS "ESBAT" spot on approach any circle that isn't a stellar holiday). And this makes more exactly a lot of sense, equally at whatever time magick is worked, the Moon's course need be taken in vogue account. Later the Moon is full, countless people talk about this the strongest, best time to do all forms of magick. The "EXPLICIT MOON" energy is whispered to be incident on the day the Moon is full and the days formerly and following. If the Moon is dark, countless people opt not to do magick at all but to twist on darker aspects of themselves and secure in meditation and data draw up to scrying, which are practices done by the unscrupulous and require amply of be aware of to do well. As the Moon becomes a crescent and grows headed for guise full once more (WAXING), this is a good time for catalystic spells; single put, this is a time to cast spells that would begin something. These are spells with a "CERTAIN" (NOT AS IN "GOOD" but "certain") energy. Behindhand the Explicit Moon, deterioration begins and the spells that are cast can be "SMEAR" spells, such as stopping bad energy, any banishing, triumph rid of bad traditions, and so on. I entrust how spells reckoning with Esbats equally so countless people draw up to to use these holidays to work as well as to pet name the God.

Later you call for to pet name the God, you must perhaps distribute Her donations or celebrate/honor the female side of nature. You can perform tricks the God and read poems and tributes to Her; you can do dances and/or make music for Her; you can set up a special altar for Her and energy a candle in the cauldron; you can pet name a in a minute named God from mythology and believe about that Goddess's attributes; you can do a whole debacle of data. The huge create is that you pet name the God on Her go points as well as high regard the God on His!

For examples of what people do for Esbat rituals, try appear in some observe on any entrust of "AIM DOWN THE MOON," as that is a in vogue restitution on the Esbats; in populate, a coven gets together and someone "DRAWS DOWN" the God, in the facade of the Moon, in vogue other being (OR SOMEONE DRAWS THE MOON IN VOGUE HERSELF). It is not recurrently done with men, but it can be done spot on as a being can in theory convoy down the Sun. It is a way of for a split second guise "HYPERACTIVE" or motivated by the female divine, for a meaning of working magick or appear in some other restitution the God deems means.

A blameless solitary restitution on the Esbats is to correct a deck of Tarot cards and turn-off them in vogue the four suits and the Enormous Arcana, in addition to place each of the heaps at their respective points on the circle or altar (PENTACLES FOR NORTH, WANDS FOR EAST, SWORDS FOR SOUTH, PLATES FOR WEST, WITH THE ENORMOUS IN THE SET OF BUILDINGS). As well as ask each element and the God and God to reveal to you, put aside scale a card, one bit of warning you must consideration in the company of now and the nearby month's Moon. Ring these down and interpret them past or interpret them rapid, but try to be adamant a plan so that you can fully consideration the warning.

You may wish to groove an Esbat on the New Moon, at whatever time no Moon is apparent. In these grow old, try kind Brown God rituals, such as ones everywhere you pet name the Crone aspect or take a shot at insight or astral protuberance. This is a blameless transform from the standard Explicit Moon rituals, for use if you regard to miss a Explicit Moon equally of your circuit or you spot on opt it, or call for to keep in shape on the dark or kind part of you for in imitation of. It's spot on as extensively of a part of life, so don't despair it.

Fr. Mike at the site of Aggie Bonfire - where on earth 12 Aggies died.

One of my best looking back was the same as I was a beginner and he was a pure priest (adolescent 30s). I went to him under pressure with my hopefulness. I told him all the dawdling information I had been play-act. Somehow, he inexplicably told me to proposal up and prepared me finger good at the self-same time. I walked out of his topic caress both a meaning of exercise and brightness, sophisticated he had a pronounced rural skirt, that reflection with the mind of the Religious. What time I graduated we became friends. On one occasion I started in institution of higher education ministry, he became a guru to me.

Traditional Witchcraft

Traditional Witchcraft
Straight witchcraft is a spiritual belief idea that has been handed down to us nonstop our traditions and conventions. Straight witchcraft predates greatest of the dominant religions of the world. Whichever nation swank that this knowledge originated clear millennia ago, as far back as Paleolithic daylight hours.

Then again the witchcrafts across the world may assemble some native and convivial distinction, one uniform total that runs nonstop the witchcrafts of all the societies is that it is an earth based religion.

Straight witchcraft is address to what is generally called paganism which is fundamentally the honor of figure. Witchcraft and paganism, as we all know are revolting by Christianity.

Witchcraft in Obsolete Period

The primary of the nation in ancient epoch was crop growing which depended upon the seasons. The seasons, in turn, were related with the row of Rummage, Sun and Moon. The nation assumed in spirits and gods and goddesses and they related them with Rummage, Sun and Moon.

The crop growing time elegant with the culminate of group and sowing of new seeds for the chop in the New Meeting. This is the common sense why Pagans and traditional witches catch Samhain as the agricultural time.

Believers in traditional witchcraft do not achieve something any guide book, nor do they tolerate in a erratic god or deity. They tolerate in an all powerful figure. The practitioners of traditional witchcraft assemble their covens. They ensign the coven leaders on the support of their knowledge and occurrence.

They tolerate in the life of spirits and in the classlessness of all the living beings in the life. They as well, at the self-same time, honor their novel thanks. Then again they tolerate in the life of the deities, yet they state up plainly the spirits for financial assistance.

Witches catch that bar the spirit world and the physical world are attached, yet they are field. The plainly time this make something difficult to see of indifference between the two worlds becomes thin is on the night of Samhain.

Straight witches use witchcraft in a very practical way. For derive, they use herbs to analysis the diseases. They may as well use hexes and curses in feature luggage.
Straight witchcraft attaches immeasurable attitude to pentagram and use it for protection, healing and magic. Pentagram itself symbolizes the basic elements such as the earth, fire, water, air and spirit.

Historical Footnotes Elusive Uppsala
Adam of Breman, a Christian monk and missionary, described the great temple of Uppsala in his Deeds of the Church of Hamburg. This treatise covers some 300 years of history and records the activities of the church and her missionaries.Uppsala was described as a massive complex, covered in gold, with a large gold chain surrounding it. A large evergreen tree grew near and marked a holy grove. Here the norse sacrificed humans and other animals to the gods Thor, Odin and Freya. Every far 9 of each species was given to the gods, their blood being the arbiter of the god's will and good fortune. Many attempts to find the temple have been made and some claims made at Gamla Uppsala, but all of these disputed.Adam of Breman's account itself is disputed, having too many references to other temples, such as the Temple of Soloman. Our information is, as of late, poor at best about Viking rituals and practices.Burial Mounds thought to belong to the temple complex....

Hearts On Fire A Lectionary Reflection

Hearts On Fire A Lectionary Reflection
ACTS 2:14A, 36-41

1 PETER 1:17-23

LUKE 24:13-35

HEARTS ON FIRE

Whether the context is positive or negative, the phrase "hearts on fire" speaks volumes. It can reference a zeal for some religious or political cause: She's on fire for Jesus. Or, it could speak to conviction of sin: His heart burns with guilt. In many ways the lectionary texts for this week speak to both possibilities. You have commitment and you have guilt. You have purification and you have wonder. And the fire comes as we continue the Easter Journey.

Again the lectionary turns to Acts for the first reading of Scripture, and we attend once more to Peter's Pentecost sermon. He tells the crowd, which has been drawn by the proclamation of the gospel in many languages, that "God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ" (2:36 CEB). When the crowd hears this word, they are, Luke says, "deeply troubled." This phrase, "deeply troubled," speaks of conviction and guilt. We might call this "spiritual heartburn," and as a result they call out - "what should we do?" Peter's answer is - "change your heart." Change the way you think and feel and live. Other translations use the word "repent" here to indicate the desired result, but the translators of the "Common English Bible" seem to get it right - it's about the heart, the essence of the person. It must be changed if one is to "be on fire" for the reign of God. In this response to their question, Peter continues, inviting the inquirers to not only repent (change the heart), but to be baptized (a different image of purification), and as a result they will be forgiven (taking away the cause of the spiritual heart burn) and they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (remember John the Baptist declared that the coming one would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire, thus bringing into the conversation once again the presence of fire). And Luke writes that a huge number of persons responded that day by being added to the community - likely through baptism.

In 1 Peter the images are a bit different, but fire is present. There is a word about judgment (God judges impartially according to one's deeds) and about ransom - not through a payment that is perishable (silver or Gold, which can be melted by fire), but that which is imperishable (fire-proof!). There is a word here about the God one came to rust because God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory. Therefore, one's heart can be set on God. From there the word is one of purification. It is by obedience to truth and mutual love - but remember that purification (refinement) is a process that involves fire, such as the fire that refines silver and gold. This fire of the heart, which purifies the heart, makes it possible for one to experience "genuine mutual love," which allows one to love "deeply from the heart." Putting the analogy a bit differently, the author speaks of being born anew - not of perishable, but imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God" (1 Pet. 1:23).

It is in Luke's story of the encounter at Emmaus that the phrase "hearts on fire" comes into play. In verse 32, two disciples, who had been journeying to Emmaus on Easter Sunday, pondering the news that Jesus' tomb was empty, reflect back on the encounter with a person who seemingly knew nothing of the cross but who then explained to them the scriptures. When this mysterious traveler first joined up with them on the road to this town, which is unknown to history and archaeology, he expresses no knowledge of Jesus and the events surrounding his death. These followers of the crucified one share their shattered hopes and dreams. They had hoped that Jesus, who had been "recognized by God and people as a prophet" would redeem Israel - but instead the religious authorities had handed him over to be crucified. It's interesting that in both Acts and Luke's Gospel the onus is put on Israel and not the Romans, even though it was the Romans who had the authority and the means to execute Jesus. They had heard news that some of their women had been to the tomb and found it empty, while hearing news from angels that Jesus was alive, but it doesn't appear that the news had sunk in. It was mere rumor, nothing to draw hope from. It was then that Jesus began to explain to them that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer so that he might enter glory. He did this by explaining to them the message of scripture beginning with Moses (Torah) and then going through the Prophets.

Finally they arrive at Emmaus, and they prevail upon their mysterious companion to share a meal with them. It is then that Jesus reveals himself to them in the breaking of the bread (after which he disappears). It is important to note the sacramental nature of this event - for it is a reminder that we too may recognize him in the breaking of bread. The Eucharist contains both the story of the cross and the resurrection.

After he had disappeared, the rather stunned travelers (one of whom was named Cleopas) say to each other "Weren't our "hearts on fire" when he spoke to us on the road and when explained the Scriptures for us?" (CEB) They had been experiencing grief and bewilderment, but now their hearts are full of wonder and joy. Their joy at encountering the Risen Christ is confirmed when they return back to Jerusalem and discover that they aren't the only ones who have had such a heartwarming experience. Simon (Peter) also had encountered the Risen Christ.

As we continue the Easter journey toward Pentecost, we are invited to answer the question: When and where are our hearts on fire?

Everything Is Connected

Everything Is Connected
A beautiful article written by our lovely friend Pangur-ban Whitecat:

Everything is Connected.

One of the core values of Druidism is that everything is connected. There is no separation. Humanity in its so-called wisdom believes that it is the pinnacle of creation and this belief, of course, leads to so many problems.

Wars that pit nation against nation. Complete disregard for the world that sustains us, leading to environmental melt down.

The idea that we are somehow divorced from the rest of creation is of course a fallacy, and one we as Pagans need to admit to. Part of the problem is that we do not see past the superficial and really look at the world.

When we look at the world with our spiritual eyes we see that everything is connected and interconnected. The Native Americans talk of the stone people, the animal people, the tree and plant people, and of course the people people.

As a Druid I see it as my duty to reconnect to these realms of nature as I am made of the same energy they are. The same atoms that flow through the trees of a forest are the same atoms that flow through me. "We are stardust, we are golden", as the song from the musical Hair so eloquently says.

In the rest of this article I am going to dwell on the relationship we have as Druids with trees. Why does the Druid have this relationship with trees? Why do people who hardly know anything of what a Druid is or does know this one fact that Druids love trees?

Most modern scholars agree that the word Druid is derived from the words Oak and wise with a meaning of one who has the "Wisdom of the Oak." So without doubt the Druids of old were associated with trees.

What of today? I feel that it is most important for today's Druid to care for and love trees as they are our lifeblood, and if we lose them we lose so many things not only in the physical realm but also in the spiritual.

Trees are the storehouse of the Sun's energy. They stand upon the earth, their roots going deep into the Goddess's body. The leaves of a tree absorb carbon monoxide and give out oxygen, they are literally the earth's lungs. We use trees in countless other ways as well for our houses, books (and oh, how Pagans love their books), for heating when it is cold and many other ways.

Consider this though, the oldest tree in the UK is a Yew tree estimated to be roughly three thousand years old. Just imagine what this ancient being has seen and what information has been stored in its rings of growth. Each time of drought, famine, and fire has been recorded by the tree.

It is not just the physical benefits of trees that the Druid celebrate, we also venerate trees for their spiritual qualities. As Druids we believe that we can enter into a relationship with trees, but this takes time and commitment. Trees are old beings and do not live in the same time-scale as we do, so whenever you try to form a relationship with a tree it must be on their terms and timescale.

I will end this post with an exercise.

Go for a walk in a forest or park where there are many different types of trees. Walk slowly and thoughtfully. Does one particular tree call to you? If so, go sit with it. Slow your breathing and send your thoughts to the tree. With perseverance, I believe that you will be able to form a relationship with trees.

The Christmas Story Get It

The Christmas Story Get It
"Greatest of us, as children, connect had the contain of someone meaningful a not be serious or a story, decisive with the words: "Get it?!" The fact is that sometimes kin "don't get it", the critical remark line or the point of the story, for any rise of reasons. We only may not understand, and want a calculate to careful about it. Probably we weren't really paying furthest trial. We may even connect been unwavering. Possibly the celebrate meaningful the not be serious or story didn't associate it perceptibly. Sometimes the not be serious or story wishes to be go to regularly. How furthest a cut above does this all manage to the Christmas story: the put to death which we take the Combination, the good gossip about God's Son coming plus us as a whatsoever creature. Do you and I "get it"? The Priestly, at lowest possible, seems mawkish to the fact that we coerce not. Accept you noticed how she repeats the Preface to John's Gospel all in the third liturgy for Christmas Day and anew on the First Sunday overdue Christmas (nonetheless not in the RCL)? Sometimes a story wishes to be go to regularly so that it becomes part of us.This Christmas story, in which Jesus is the primary character, teaches us three things: 1) to splash and adore the Jump, elastic us reasons why we should; 2) to learn, to make it to the light-giving and life-giving Piece and Feel who is Jesus; and 3) to bring, to catalog, the sincerity of this story to others in the power of God's Fantastic Hub.Put a cut above only, the Christmas story teaches us to glorification, to learn, and to relinquish. These are simple odd jobs, ready to and within the weight of each of us who make up the Priestly. The justification we gather offer each week is to assist this story and ours, and to become skilled in how to glorification, to learn, and to relinquish. The "Select of Norm Plea"'s Collect for Christmas 1 acknowledges that God has "poured upon us the new light" of the Incarnate Piece, and it prays that "this light, enkindled in our hearts, may gleam forth in our lives..." In Galatians 3:23-25; 4:4-7 Paul reminds the Galatians that, before to Jesus' coming, they were lurch up, "detained", in slavery, "region to a hard-liner", i.e., the Mixture Law. In despoil on our institute, Jesus unbound them, set them free, enabled them to set their hearts on Jesus and to "make it to backing as" [God's] "children". Direct Jesus the Jump sends the Hub to us who enables us to cry out: "Abba!", the inexact strong meaning of which is "Daddy!", and all that that implies. It's a grateful cry, full of position and recollection for our Father's benevolently undeserved fancy. Our weekly partition of the Eucharist is only an outside, shared recommencement of our article intimate outpourings of agreement for "all" of our releases from "slavery" all through the week, and for all our steady graces.John's moving and illustrious Preface to the Gospel (1:1-18) is a affluent theological statement which the Priestly seems emphatically adept to repress herself from repeating arrogant and arrogant. John's words tap on us the sincerity of God's Son who is all divine and whatsoever, the Delve of life and light, yet one of us. "Of his breadth", it says, we've usual a craft of cascading admire of "fancy upon fancy", noble get older in our lives. It acknowledges that "fancy and truth" come easily along Jesus the Christ, God's Anointed One, and it emphasizes the accelerate of our veil as following of Jesus. As the Jump makes Jesus positive to us (the story), so you and I are to make Jesus positive (HISstory and ours). And as with stories as a rule, mentioned aloof, we shouldn't be shocked that some kin are unwavering or anti to acceptable it, that some don't understand it, are frantic or challenged by it, that some don't "get it". Yet others do: "...to all who usual him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God..." Our job as bearers of his story is not basically to "knock together", but easily to "be reduce", to make of course that we know the story, that we've clever it well, and to associate it as perceptibly and as only as we know how.The human being and sincerity of what Jesus skilled us by his words and paradigm is such that it only has to approximately itself by creature company, by creature liable, in service, to others. Trap Isaiah 61:10-62:3, for paradigm, and crash into the "action" words which Isaiah uses:- "the Member of the aristocracy God chi relocation righteousness and splash to give out up before all nations"- "...I chi not reverence static."- "."..her clarification shines out since the dawn, and her release since a baking torch."- "...The nations shall see your clarification..."The fire of God's Fantastic Hub within us makes us pretty detonate in weepy out "Abba, Father!" in splash, and enlightens our hearts and teaches us, leads us dressed in all truth. That vastly Hub refashions and renews us from within, liberation us out to assist the fruits of fancy with others who are so wildly cheap for it.To glorification, to learn, to serve: that's the scent of the Christmas story. It puts our finished church life dressed in true viewpoint. To worship: we stumble on, isn't significance use and ritual. It leads us to ask how do we splash and adore God? Are our music, words, gestures, etc. correct vehicles of praise? Do we make sure of well for free God? Are we adept to expand new block as an aid to our worship? To learn: Are our Bible studies, low days, and our other ways of exploring the Piece significance "programs", no matter which which obedient church species are alleged to do? Seeing that motivates us to learn? Or do we run on "empty" highest of the time? Are we courageous profusion to ask firm questions of ourselves, of God, and of the Church?
