I was researching the vampire subculture and checking in with a few websites related to this, as well as on Pagan websites I frequent, and found mention of a gentleman claiming to be an expert in "the occult", and using this "expertise" to lead seminars and provide consulting on "occult ritual crimes" for law enforcement, as well as the media and various civic groups. The individual is Don Rimer, and I found him mentioned on both vampire and Pagan websites as someone who keeps quite busy presenting his views on the dangers of everything from Afro-Caribbean religions to the vampire culture to various fantasy-role playing games. Given these claims I thought it was worth exploring.

Long Island Mysteries

Long Island is not lacking some seriously, disturbingly delicious legends.

I love a good legend, and I always wonder if there is any kernel of truth in them. In the case of Long Island's Hatchet Mary, it appears to be purely urban legend.

The legend says a young woman in 1978 murdered her parents with a hatchet and then killed herself and her ghost roams the wooded roadside at night at Sweet Hollow Road as a Lady in White. Another variation has the young woman being admitted to the local mental institution after killing her parents.

In fact, Sweet Hollow Road and Mount Misery Road are considered especially haunted roads on Long Island and also cloaked in Native American legends of "off limits/taboo" places. As well, there are UFO sightings, wandering specters, a legend of a hellhound that walks on two legs, and other oddities often associated with "portal" regions or places with multiple para-activity in one geographic area.

The other legend of the area is called Mount Misery, a local term for a closed psychiatric hospital called Kings Park Psychiatric Hospital. People believe the area to be haunted by past patients. Some of these legends about it are quite detailed and unsettling such as this one:

"If a policeman pulls you over, check the back of his head. If he has no skull back there, you have just met one of Mount Misery's ghosts. If you see a man walking along the road in the rain but when you stop to pick him up, he is gone, do not be alarmed. He may be a ghost. Some witnesses have reported seeing a disheveled man walking with a basket of heads, supposedly from people who mysteriously disappeared in the area. Mainly there are just thick woods on both sides of the road. The legend is that if you find the right trail that will take you to the spot where the main hospital once was, you will see burning ghosts running and screaming. Another part to the legend is that Mount Misery Road is haunted by the mental patient who started the original fire there. She can be seen at certain times along the road. I've heard that she wears a hospital robe and has wild white hair. I've also heard that she slowly dances along the side of the road. I've been there several times and have seen nothing. There is a legend of Mary's Grave. This infamously supposedly spooky site is vague. There are many stories as to where it is. There are also various versions of the legend including that she killed children tried as a witch long ago and hanged. It is said if a child goes to her grave, she will come to life and kill them. Another version of that legend says Mary was married to a sailor who died at sea. It is said that she lights a candle in the window of the house she lived in, searching for her husband. There is yet another version in which she was locked up and abused by an insane mother, she went mad and killed her with an axe, she went missing and still roams the area. Locals have added much more to the legends including certain rituals and incantations to elicit reactions from the spirits.

The infamous DeFeo murders at the Amityville house were also a subject of Long Island creepiness. A man was arrested for killing his mother, father, two brothers and two sisters in their sleep. Lake Ronkonkoma is know by the Natives as a place for pilgrimage and healing. It is also part of legends of underground tunnels, odd lights, strange whirlpools, and a tale of a woman who tied rocks to her ankles and drowned herself with unrequited love and each years takes a male swimmer and drowns him.

The legends of ghosts on Long Island are vast and quite gothic and classic in nature. There are so many stories of wandering spirits in agony, angst, lonesomeness, and anger.

There is no doubt about it that when a place has multiple types of para stories, urban legends, Native American taboo and a dark history, it becomes a kind of sinkhole of weirdness. Long Island seems to have its own harbor of darkness and mystery. I find it utterly fascinating and inspired. This is an urban legend lover's dream!

The Great Railroad Race (Utah Territory) / 0-590-10991-X

Another wonderful Dear America book - this one covers the race to connect the opposite ends of the country with a single railroad. Our narrator here is the daughter of an intrepid journalist, who hopes to strike it at least semi-rich by being one of the few to cover the story first-hand. While I recommend the Dear America series for both children and adults, I recognize that the series is primarily marketed towards young children, and I will follow my usual reviewing pattern for marking out things a parent might wish to be fore-warned about.

There's wonderful history to be had here, and the first-hand account of watching the railroad being built is wonderful. The narrator details the cooperation between former Union and Confederate soldiers, and treats with fairness and dignity the situations of the American Indians (who are being displaced by the railroad) and the Chinese immigrants (who are working under harsh conditions to build the railroad). The hasty and sometimes slip-shod manner in which the railroad is assembled is highlighted and the reader will marvel that the end product worked at all. Also much appreciated here is the strong characterization of the narrator's mother - she insists that the entire family will travel with her wanderlust-driven husband, and that is that. It is later revealed that she knows as much about the printing and editing of a newspaper as her worthy husband, and the two make a good team out on the frontier, a welcome change from the standard "mother does the housework and not much else" theme often found in historical literature.

Some things which may not be age appropriate for all children include the death of a small boy who places a penny on the rail tracks only to be killed by the high velocity of the shooting penny when the train strikes it. This is also one of the most 'sexually explicit' of the Dear America novels I have read - the narrator and her friend sneak into the bad part of one of the shanty towns one night and are accosted by drunk men who want to force them to 'dance'. It is only by kicking their way free that the girls are able to escape, and they are very frightened by the experience. Also, Mormons are heavily featured in this installment, with the narrator spending a good deal of time in Salt Lake City and meeting Brigham Young. Our narrator is very interested in how a man can have multiple wives, and she is very distressed to learn that several of her female cousins have entered into plural marriages. She also meets a few Mormon girls her age who wish to be friends. Children may share the narrator's confusion about this complicated issue.

There is one slightly odd thing about this story. A character named "Pete" is featured; Pete is a bearded, stinky old man who lives with the narrator and her family. He served in the war with her father and saved his life and now lives alone with the family, rarely speaking unless spoken to. When the narrator decides to be kind to Pete, in spite of his stench and ugly looks, Pete shaves his beard and suddenly becomes a very attractive, charming nineteen-year-old. This magical Beauty and the Beast transformation is extremely disconcerting to the reader, if not to the narrator (her adjustment to this new love interest takes a mere 24 hours). Pete has been living with the family under frontier conditions with very little privacy for clothing changes, bodily functions, and basic attempts at washing, and it does seem strange that the 15-year-old narrator wasn't cautioned by her otherwise prudent mother that Pete was quite a bit closer to her age than she had realized. It isn't, I suppose, a big deal, but I found it very odd, and parents may as well.

I seem to meet many extremists too and that is a complete turn off no matter what religion. So, I've been feeling pretty 'anti' lately. Thankfully, someone very wise and dear to me made a comment regarding the latest Celebrating Earth Spirituality Event debacle. She said:

"I will never understand why some people just cannot understand that there are many, many different faiths. Each has its beauty and is right for the person that follows that path. My faith is within me and it keeps me strong just as others' faith does for them.

Whenever I see one or two of any faith trying to force their way on another, I think of my father and how his deep faith as a Christian never wavered...he came to our Circles, he celebrated with us and he never once felt threatened or felt he needed to pull me or any one in our Circle to his faith. This is a true example, to me, of a Christian...of a beautiful person. We shared together...and we loved each other!

When you close your eyes and heart to someone based on religion, color, race, etc, you will never know the possible beauty, kinship or love that you may be missing. How sad would that be! The Wisdom of God, then, even in an orthodox interepretation of the Trinity, must be in both the Father and the Son. Together, the dyad Logos/Sophia fully represent the One. This is curious, given that orthodoxy entangles itself with this "complementarianism", which is tantamount to spiritual discrimination along the lines of the old"separate but equal"euphamism.

The sexes have different roles in the flesh, but the ultimate spiritual unity from which they come is the One, Ineffable Godhead, which is pure thought encompassing everything, and emanating through the Logos/Sophia Syzygy. In the strictest sense then, the Almighty is only complete within the Trinity if both masculine and feminine hypostases are breathing and speaking. One need not look to scriptures to see this macrocosmic Being reproduced in our own microcosms, and yet this understanding of the Trinity also leaves room for a broader acceptance of sexual identity and orientation. If the Trinity contains a sexual dyad, what difference does it make what humans are or with whom they have sexual relations?

For the Eastern Rite, the nature of the Trinity was the reason why the "FILIOQUE" was never accepted. The Holy Spirit is not somehow demoted by the Word. A trinity is a trinity, not a lopsided masculine dyad (Father-Son) with a mysterious Spirit lurking below the Logos. In the words of Fr. Bulgakov, "The Father begets the Word and abides in him by the Holy Spirit." (39)

History and ecclesiology teach me that Church Fathers have been bending over backwards to deny the feminine aspect of the Divine. It comes as little surprise to me that this misogynistic tendency has had serious implications for both the spiritual and physical lives and welfare of women over the centuries. Thankfully, many orthodox and gnostic Christians recognize this lamentable history and have engaged in scholarship and praxis to better understand and live these divine mysteries.
