Cosmic horror is a concept that was manifested through the morbidity and disgust of a dyspeptic wasp reactionary in the wake of the industrial revolution. It has no historical religious precedent. The closest would be Gnosticism which is similarly pessimistic about Gods, but still posits beneficent forces in the universe. As a belief, it owes its existence mainly to Cartesian billiard ball metaphysics through which it reveals itself as the the wrathful embodiment of the unconscious scorned by modernism. A universe devoid of meaning only produces meaningless life, and what can a meaningless life be but something monstrous? The elder gods are embodiments of despair. A despair that isn't mere lamentation, but a screech of horror into an indifferent night that rises like the smoke of a funeral pyre, but spreading infinitely into pure spiritual darkness.
