Google Marks St Georges Day With Dragon Illustration
Earlier this week, Google celebrated Earth Day with 6 different animated creatures including the mascot of their latest algorithm, the hummingbird. These animations displayed above the search box on the Google home page. Hummingbird was launched in September, it's a total overhaul of Google's core search technology and it aims to provide more useful results to complex queries. The funniest of the animations shown was this one pictured above of a dung beetle rolling a ball of dung.

St. George's day remembered online

Today is Saint George's day and Google has delivered yet more fantastic art work. This time it is an evocative illustration of Saint George, lance in hand, approaching a fire breathing dragon in a dark forest. Saint George was a Palestinian Saint, famous for slaying a dragon. He is the patron Saint of England because he appeared in the sky before the English army as they went to battle with the French. He guaranteed the victory of the English and we've loved him ever since. Not only is St. George's day celebrated in the UK and its old colonies like Canada, but also in many other nations around the world.

In fact he is the patron Saint of so many things that I can't list them all here, but I'll let you know a few at least. He is the patron Saint of Georgia (which is also named after him), as well as Brazil which inherited George from Portugal. George is the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Greece, Palestine and Russia. He's also the patron Saint of the city of Milan in Italy, Moscow in Russia, Amersfoort, Beirut, Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa and Ljubljana. He's also very popular with gypsies. So don't let anyone tell you Saint George's day is Anglocentric.

I'm not sure how many countries are seeing the Saint George's day illustration on the Google search page today, but those that can't can see it here instead! God bless England and Saint George!
