What Is Evangelical Catholicism

Catholicism by its very nature is evangelical, but the term has become more closely associated with our non-Catholic brethren. Here is a message from a Father Newman who serves in the "Buckle" of the Bible-Belt, Greenville, NC. Father Newman talks about the necessity of a clear knowledge of the gospel and clear intent to live the Christian life. He says that receiving the sacraments without gospel faith is "superstition" which is one of the most common accusations leveled towards Catholics.

The Principles of Evangelical Catholicism

1. The Lord Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of all mankind, and no human person can fully understand his life or find his dignity and destiny apart from a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. It is not enough to know who Jesus is; we must know Jesus.

2. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is divine revelation, not human wisdom, and the Gospel is given to us in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition which together constitute a single divine deposit of faith transmitted authentically and authoritatively by the Bishops in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. We must surrender our private judgments in all matters of faith and morals to the sacred teaching authority of the Church's Magisterium if we are to receive the whole Gospel.

3. The seven Sacraments of the New Covenant are divinely instituted instruments of grace given to the Church as the ordinary means of sanctification for believers. Receiving the Sacraments regularly and worthily is essential to the life of grace, and for this reason, faithful attendance at Sunday Mass every week (serious illness and necessary work aside) and regular Confession of sins are absolutely required for a life of authentic discipleship.

4. Through Word and Sacrament we are drawn by grace into a transforming union with the Lord Jesus, and having been justified by faith we are called to sanctification and equipped by the Holy Spirit for the good works of the new creation. We must, therefore, learn to live as faithful disciples and to reject whatever is contrary to the Gospel, which is the Good News of the Father's mercy and love revealed in the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

5. The sacred liturgy, through which the seven Sacraments are celebrated and the Hours of praise are prayed, makes present to us the saving mysteries of the Lord Jesus. The liturgy must therefore be celebrated in such a way that the truth of the Gospel, the beauty of sacred music, the dignity of ritual form, the solemnity of divine worship, and the fellowship of the baptized assembled to pray are kept together in organic unity.

6. Receiving the Sacraments without receiving the Gospel leads to superstition rather than living faith, and the Church must therefore take great care to ensure that those who receive the Sacraments also receive the Gospel in its integrity and entirety. Consequently, before Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion, and Marriage are administered, there must be in those who request these Sacrament clear evidence of knowledge of the Gospel and a serious intention to live the Christian life.

7. Being a follower of Christ requires moving from being a Church member by convention to a Christian disciple by conviction. This transformation demands that we consciously accept the Gospel as the measure of our entire lives, rather than attempting to measure the Gospel by our experience. Personal knowledge of and devotion to Sacred Scripture is necessary for this transformation to occur through the obedience of faith, and there is no substitute for personal knowledge of the Bible. Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ. 8. All the baptized are sent in the Great Commission to be witnesses of Christ to others and must be equipped by the Church to teach the Gospel in word and deed. An essential dimension of true discipleship is the willingness to invite others to follow the Lord Jesus and the readiness to explain His Gospel.

Try The Books

J.C. Philpot, in a sermon we have been excerpting in Herescope for the past several days entitled "Trying the Spirits" circa 1844, concludes with a warning about books.

Books?! How harmless books must have been in 1844 compared to the open heresies of our postmodern era! Yet, he implores believers to guard themselves, to "try the spirits" of every religious book that they are tempted to put into their hands. Here is what he says:

...Now we are to "try the spirits." We are not to submit implicitly to what every man who stands up in a pulpit may choose to say. We are not to receive, as written by the Spirit, every BOOK put into our hands that is called a religious work. We are not to believe every WORD that is spoke by persons professing a sound creed. We are commanded, God the Spirit calls upon us, to "try the spirits" by our own experience, and by the doctrine, experience, and precept recorded in the book of God. Now, do so, my friends. I would charge it upon your conscience. Do see what impression the things connected with religion have upon your minds. Look at the religious BOOKS you read: see what impressions they leave upon your heart. Look at the persons professing godliness that you associate with; see what effects attend their conversation. Above all, look at the ministers you hear; and see what impressions they leave by their ministry on your conscience....

...Thus, as far as the Spirit of God is your teacher, you are called upon to "try the spirits whether they are of God." And thus, a child of God will have, more or less, perpetual cause for inward trial. Sometimes he will be trying his own heart, to see how God is dealing with him: and it will be his happiness if he can find some sweet testimony that the Lord is dealing with him in mercy. Sometimes he will TRY THE BOOKS that come before him, (for, THE EAR TRIETH WORDS, AS THE MOUTH TASTETH MEAT," JOB XXXIV. 3): and he will cast aside every BOOK, however sound in doctrine, that does not communicate grace to his soul. Those works, written by gracious men, which have power and feeling, such as Hart's Hymns, Bunyan's Grace Abounding and Pilgrim, and Huntington's Works, will be his chiefly prized books, that his soul, under the Spirit's teaching, may be imbued with some of the rain and dew that fell upon those blessed men.... Sadly, it is a fact of our Christian life that we cannot trust others to guard us from bad books. Christian bookselling has become a huge industry and it has become apparent that profit are the ugly new reality. There is therefore no guarantee that when you walk into a Christian bookstore that you won't find terribly heretical books. And there is no guarantee that books -- even by esteemed and lauded Christian leaders -- won't be filled to the brim with leaven, corrupt doctrine or biblical errors.

As Philpot's sermon so carefully explains, individual believers have a Scriptural responsibility to "try the spirits, whether they are of God" (I John 4:1).

The other day Christian Research Service issued a statement summarizing the past few years of its efforts to see if any components of the Christian bookselling industry would be willing to clean themselves up. The response has been overwhelmingly negative:

There are those who deny the deity of the Lord Jesus, who reject His unique Saviourhood, who cast away the infallibility of His Word, who deny that man was created in the image of God by a special creative act, who deny that man has an immortal soul, who reject the reality of eternal punishment in hell, who refuse to believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit, who deny the need and possibility of divine regeneration, who believe that children need little or no discipline, who refuse to believe that Jesus is coming again, who deny categorically that one can have in this world absolute religious truth. In contrast with this spirit of unbelief the Christian who is separated unto God rejoices in the revelation which God has given to us in His Word and brings 'every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.' [2 Cor. 10:5] The unbelief of many modern men is awful, but this unbelief furnishes a dark background for the light of simple Christian faith to shine in today.

"There are those who say foolishly that the truth of God's Word needs no defense. It is true that God's Word will always remain absolutely reliable, even if all men be found to be unbelievers. Letter To Ibrahim Going Nuclear

Lots of interesting points being made here (especially in your comments on last three posts) - I won't try to address them all.

Seems to me one of the biggest issues you raise concerns the use of reason. Here's a popular argument for general scepticism:

Why suppose reason is a reliable route to the truth? Any justification of reason we offer will itself rely on reason, and so be unacceptably circular. So, that reason is a reliable route to truth cannot be justified. But if reliance on reason cannot be justified, then, because every justification relies on reason, nothing can be justified.

So, all beliefs are equally irrational!

Moreoever, if, to qualify as knowledge, a belief must be justified, knowledge is impossible too.

Suppose I am involved in a debate - and I'm struggling to make my case. In fact, my opponent seems to have shown I'm wrong. Oh dear. What do I do?

I might be tempted to make just this sceptical move. It offers a wonderful "get out of jail" card. I give the sceptical argument outlined above and conclude: "So you see? - both our positions are, in the last analysis, equally (ir)rational!"

Once I play the sceptical card, all my opponent's hard work in constructing arguments against my position counts for nothing. At one stroke, they are all demolished.

I can now walk away with my head held high, having "established" that my position is no less reasonable than my opponent's!

Now Ibrahim, when people criticise Islam, and also your approach to religious education, you do, it seems to me, sometimes play this sort of sceptical card.

That's OK. But bare in mind that in such discussions, playing the sceptical card really is "the nuclear option". You avoid defeat, yes, but only by utterly annihilating the rationality of every position. All positions, no matter how sensible or nuts, come out as equally (ir)rational!

You must now say: "Hey, that the Earth is flat, that the earth is round, that milk makes people fly, that it doesn't, that astrology is true, that is isn't, that Mohammed is God's prophet, that he isn't - all these beliefs are equally (un)reasonable!

Now, is that what you really want to say? I guess not, but I am not sure.

In fact, once you take the nuclear option, you have to give up supposing reason is any sort of route to truth. You can't take the nuclear option, but then, when you think maybe you can muster a cogent argument for not allowing children to think critically about religion, slip that argument back into the fray.

But that seems to be exactly what you have just done, in fact (you just suggested if you don't fill kids heads with Islam, they'll get filled with something far more pernicious - that's an argument).

When I offer arguments against encouraging mindless, uncritical acceptance of Islam, you go nuclear. But then, five minutes later, I find you offering an argument in support of your own position. There's a lack of consistency here, surely? You're not playing fair!

Indeed, the fact that you do continue to use reason wherever you think it supports your case - and also in everyday life, when you rely on it almost every minute (indeed, you constantly trust your life to it) - shows that playing the sceptical card is, in truth, merely a rhetorical ploy. You don't really believe what you're saying about reason. You are saying it just to raise enough dust and confusion to make quick your escape. Or so it seems to me!

The point of my astrology example needs spelling out. I have two questions:

(i) Given Ted's attitude to his book, does that show that the truth of astrology cannot be rationally settled? If your answer is "no", why does the fact that you take a similar attitude to the Koran show that the truth about the Koran cannot be rationally settled? But perhaps your answer is "yes"?

(ii) Is Ted's attitude to his book foolish? If you say that Ted is a fool, then the question is, why aren't those who take a similar attitude to the Koran similarly foolish? If you deny Ted is a fool, well, don't you make yourself look foolish?

I'm particularly keen to get answers to these two questions, Ibrahim, if you've got the time.

Quebecois Liturgy Ii

Yesterday I had to suffer one of the worst pieces of liturgical terrorism that I have had the misfortune to witness. It was the final Mass of the meeting of Delegates for the International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec. Rather than describe the scene in detail let me give it to you in bullet points:

* The Mass was celebrated in the room where we had, a few hours previously, had a buffet. The tables which were used as serving tables during the buffet were made into a long table down the centre of the room (making it look like it was prepared for another buffet). Chairs were arranged looking in on either side.

* Lay people were encouraged to sit where they liked - except for some of the front seat which were reserved for bishops. Priests were supposed to sit mingled with the people (in actual fact the herd mentality took over and we all sat together at one end).
* In the 'entrance procession', some women (I think they were religious though had nothing visible to show the fact) brought flowers and candles which they placed at strategic places along the long table.
* At the Offertory, these same women brought chalices and patens on serving trays and placed them upon the table at strategic places, and they themselves poured wine (no water) into the chalices. These were not placed on corporals at all.
* After the Eucharistic Prayer these same women approached the table beckoning (in an evidently pre-thought out manner) the bishops towards the table to partake of the Eucharist (ugh).
* The priests were given Holy Communion as though they were lay people.

Some liturgical terrorists had obviously taken over the planning for this Mass. All I can say is Cranmer would have been proud. What struck me most was the inconsistency of having spoken about the sacrifice of the Mass and adoration during his rather pedestrian talk earlier, Cardinal Marc Ouellet then celebrated this Mass without batting an eyelid at the way in which it had been arranged.

The agenda of the liturgorists was evident. They wanted everyone to sit side by side - priests and people - because they have no faith in the sacred nature of the priesthood, and in the difference of nature and not just of grade of the ordained priesthood from the baptismal priesthood. The way they pushed these women forward to do the deacons role, and to 'facilitate' the bishops' celebration of the Eucharist (as if they'd never been to a Mass before) was saying that they believed that women should be ordained to the priesthood.

This was, of course, done under the nose of Cardinal Josef Tomko, the President of the Pontifical Council for the International Eucharistic Congress. And, while he seemed to play along at the time, I know from speaking to his secretary in the Pontifical Council, Fr Ferdinand Pratzner, today that all has been noted, and that a meeting to speak about the liturgy has been planned for Monday. Fr Pratzner was also very critical of the hymn for the Congress which, in its French version at least, seems to suggest that the bread and wine of the Eucharist only become sacramentally the body and blood of Christ by virtue of them being shared among us (step forward again Archbishop Cranmer).

My reaction is that this Congress has been seen (at least by Cardinal Ouellet, I think) as a remedy for the apparent disastrous decadence of the Church in French Canada during the last 40 years. Well it won't be a remedy unless this liturgical playing around, so characteristic of liberal North American liturgy, is jettisoned and the presciptions of Redemptionis Sacramentum and Sacramentum Caritatis are adopted.

Good morning, dear friends!I am so excited to be in this chapter, at last! Here we meet our spiritual ancestor, our adopted spiritual father, Abraham! And he's not some unreal hero with whom we can't relate. He's as real and flawed as we are. He was by no means perfect, but he was called by God to do two things:"The Lord had said to Abram, "Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father's family, and go to the land that I will show you."Do you see the two verbs in that sentence? God called Abraham to LEAVE and to GO. Leave what and go where? We saw from the last chapter that Abram was living with his family in Ur, an ancient city in the southern part of Mesopotamia. Apparently it was quite the wealthy city of at least 200,000 - one which was a center of worship for many gods, but particularly devoted to the patron god of the moon. In Joshua 24:2, we read, Joshua said to the people, "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they worshiped other gods."So Abram was raised in the heart of polytheistic idol worship. He was a city boy (according to Jon Courson, he was actually about 50 when first called), who was very comfortable in his neighborhood. Beth Moore, in her study, The Patriarchs, says, "Like many of us, he knew too little of the MORE to be dissatisfied with the LESS." (emphasis mine) But it was this environment that God calls him to leave. I'm hoping you are beginning to grasp the significance of Abram's choice to leave everything and everyone he knew to follow the one true God. You have to wonder what kind of supernatural encounter Abram had with God that made him want to obey the call. The Bible is not specific as to what Abram saw and heard. We know about the encounters that Moses and Isaiah and Paul had, but we're not given details about this one. In Acts 7:2-3, we catch a glimpse from Stephen's testimony:"Our glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham in Mesopotamia before he settled in Haran. God told him, 'Leave your native land and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.' So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran until his father died."He apparently saw our God in all of His glory! WOW! Beth Moore reminds us that "out of this holy confrontation monotheism was reborn in a heinously idolatrous world culture. This encounter was thus one of the most pivotal moments in human history." I love that! Now, God also called Abram to GO. Go where? "... to the land I will show you." He was being asked to step out, without a map or GPS, and to just follow God's lead! We know from the last verse in chapter 11 that they were being led to Canaan. And we also know that when they came to the very door of Canaan, they instead settled in Haran, and tarried there until Abram's father, Terah, died. So even from the get go, Abram delays going the full distance in obedience. However, God does not give up on Abram. He surely saw something in Abram that made Him choose Abram to become the father of nations. What was it? Was it because Abram was deeply spiritual in nature and had been seeking the true God daily since childhood? I like Beth Moore's take on this: "We have no biblical reason to believe Abram and Sarai were looking for another god, but God was undoubtedly looking for them." This is the key. We don't choose God, He chooses us! He is ALWAYS the initiator in this relationship we have with Him. However, our part is to BELIEVE God. And this is what Abram did. When God called him to leave, he did! What is God calling us to leave? Old habits? A bad temper? A problem with alcohol? A bad relationship? A comfortable job? And where is He calling us to go? Maybe you have done the LEAVING part, but your having trouble with the GOING... Like Abram, we are being asked to trust Him and to step out of our comfort zones into something new - something more! This blog seems to be something like that for me! Let's not be afraid to follow! Ye gads! We only looked at one verse! This is such a great story - can't wait to continue!Love to you all

How to avoid this? Well...first, don't treat your faith like a sundial! To understand that statement, let me share a story.

. Give it the chance to grow in the midst of adversity

. Shelter it and it will die or at the very least become a strangled, stringent shadow of what it otherwise might be.

We both agreed that choosing a wiccan name was certainly not a decision to be taken lightly, but had quite varying opinions of many of the other factors involved. It was an interesting conversation and afterwards I thought about the fact that there might be people reading the blog who were considering Wicca or witchcraft as a way of life and so it might be useful to discuss the implications of choosing a name.

Actually, my reasons for bringing this subject in so early are two fold. Firstly, to get you thinking about the importance of your development, whatever your current stage might be. But also so that you could start to see what characteristics and traits are significant and what you should be expecting. I figured that now was as good a time as any!

WHERE TO START WHEN SEARCHING FOR A WITCH/WICCANNAME?

Wiccan names and meanings are very wide ranging, but also very personal. Every witch will tell you a different story of how she came by her (or his) name. For some, it is intensely private, and is kept secret between themselves and the Gods and Goddesses. Others, reveal it to their coven, while others still are happy to make the name publicly known (although this is frowned upon by many covens and practising wiccans).

In choosing your name, I'm of the opinion that as well as representing something that you strive to be, it should also epitomise your strongest personality traits, seeing as it is something that will potentially remain with you for a very long time.

So, you should be starting to think about some of the qualities that you have as a person now, as well as those you would also like to develop as you progress as a witch. Take a moment to really think about it. Many people fall into the trap of trying to become someone different when they take up witchcraft and mistakenly choose a name that is the opposite of them, revealing the fact that they are running away from something. It can be helpful to try sitting quietly and letting your thoughts run over the name in your mind to see whether it feels complete. Try a simple ritual, such as writing it in runes or a cleansing, smudging ritual.
