Enochian Synchronicities

Back in the late 1990's there was something of a shift in the approach taken to Enochian magick. Up until that time most practitioners had pretty much accepted the Golden Dawn approach as published by Israel Regardie and articulated by Gerald Schueler, who had at that time written several introductory books on the system. One of the big points of contention when working with the Golden Dawn system was the elaborate pronunciation system believed to have been developed by Wynn Wescott. This pronunciation system linked the Angelic language to Hebrew by inserting Hebrew vowel sounds into difficult-to-pronounce clusters of consonants. In the late 1990's, though, a number of authors came to the conclusion that the best pronunciation system was that recorded by John Dee himself during his scrying sessions with Edward Kelley. Today Dee's pronunciation is used by most of the practitioners I know, which is quite different from the situation a decade or so ago. There is still some disagreement regarding how to read Dee's notations for particular words, but the insertion of Hebrew vowels is for the most part a complete non-starter.

Over the past few years it seems like another shift is on its way. The rise in popularity of grimoire magick has renewed interest in studying Enochian magick as a grimoire-based or at least grimoire-influenced style of magick. The Golden Dawn system relied on an elaborate series of Qabalistic associations to link Enochian into the order's version of the Tree of Life, and in fact there are still quite a few magicians who have found that dialect of the system useful. On the other hand, it seems like these days more and more people are working "old school" and many of the recent books on the system reflect this approach. These include Aaron Leitch's The Angelical Language Volume I and Volume II, Stephen Skinner's Practical Angel Magic of John Dee's Enochian Tables, and of course my own Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy, which includes modern ritual forms but still preserves the original structure of the system for those who would rather work with it that way. In addition, one of the first books published based on the original approach, Gfrey James' The Enochian Evocation of Dr. John Dee is still in print. It was first published in 1983, so it seems to have predated the recent trend by almost thirty years.

I mention this more grimoire-based approach in reference to two recent posts by Frater AIT, a Golden Dawn initiate, who has started working with a more stripped down originalist approach to Enochian and is publishing his results. You can find those posts here and here, and while his results are somewhat preliminary they are nonetheless quite interesting. If we really are seeing another shift in Enochian studies back toward the original source material that strikes me as a pretty cool thing. Back when I first started working with the system I adored James' book (back then, the Heptangle edition, which I still use from time to time) and felt a lot more lukewarm about Schueler and even Aleister Crowley's "Liber Chanokh", which essentially summarizes the Golden Dawn approach. It's very clear to me that while Qabalistic associations can be found within the Enochian system, it's essentially a more complex and sophisticated version of grimoire magick rather than a fundamentally Tree-of-Life-based cipher with questionable Egyptian attributions. That's not to say anyone who's getting good results with Golden Dawn methods should nonetheless stop working that way - far from it! It's more to suggest that anyone who has found the Golden Dawn methods lacking like I did should take a look at the grimoire approach and see if it works better for them.

So does all this really constitute a new trend? I certainly hope so, and not just because I want to sell a lot of books. Unlike any of the other grimoire systems that have survived, with Enochian we have transcripts of the original sessions that led to its creation. In effect, this provides ritual hackers like myself with the "source code" to delve much more deeply into the system and perhaps even shed more light on the inner workings of the entire grimoire magick approach to ritual work. As I see it, the people who are out there conducting similar experiments to mine the better, especially if like Frater AIT they are willing to share some of their results with the community at large.

JH - I was baptized. My dad is an atheist, always has been for my entire life. Actually, my mom is very spiritual, but I wouldn't say that she's religious. I think that I stopped believing in God when I was like seven or something. Ha! I decided, "Nah, that's bullshit." Ha! I didn't want to go to church with class and all this stuff. Because I was baptized, I was a member of the church until I was eighteen, when it was legal for me to leave to the Lutheran Church. You have to be eighteen to legally leave, if you're baptized. Nobody can leave it for you, and you have to be of age to sign that paper that "I don't want to be a part of this," which is stupid, I think. It should be whenever you go, "Yeah, I don't want to be a part of it." That should be it. I got this very funny paper sent back to me - "Since you're not going to be a part of the church anymore, we can't guarantee your place in heaven." Ha! Growing up, I didn't come from a very religious home. No, I didn't. I was always brought up to question stuff, to look into it - "Does this make sense?" That's how I was brought up. I've always been interested in history. I think that's also one of the reasons why I got into Viking history and Viking mythology.

JH - No. I've met a couple of guys, but only briefly. It's never been long discussions or anything. None of them have contacted me. Honestly, I don't think I would want to, either. I know it sounds kind of weird, since some of the lyrics are kind of preaching, but I don't want to preach. I don't want to be that guy, to tell people what to believe and what not to believe, especially since I'm an atheist myself. It wouldn't be logical for me to do that.

I live in the city, but believe it or not, I have a yard. On learning of this, the King of the Assyrians wanted to know the reason why. The Israelites held captive in Assyria replied that it was because the settlers did not know the ways of the God of that place. Hence, the King sent them a priest from the Jews to instruct them in the Law of God. They accepted only the five books of Moses, rejecting the Prophets and the rest of Scripture, and continuing to worship their own idols. They were called Samaritans after Mount Somor. They were hated by the Hebrews who returned from captivity, because they were only semi-Jewish; the Jews did not eat with them, regarding them as worthy of abomination. For this reason, they frequently called Christ a Samaritan, on the ground that, like the Samaritans, He supposedly violated certain provisions of the Law.

Jesus, therefore, came to Sichar, and being weary from His journey, sat down at about the sixth hour of the day. A certain woman came from the city to draw water, the Disciples having gone to purchase food. Jesus asked her for water, but she excused herself by saying that the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans (St. John 4:9); for she knew who He was, both by His accent and by His apparel. Jesus raised their conversation to a higher level by introducing the idea of spiritual water, which connotes abundance and cleansing power, since the Spirit is always likened to water and fire. The woman was sure, from the fact that He had not brought a bucket, that He did not have such water, and added that the well was deep. She then went on to talk about their forefather Jacob, saying that he had dug the well and that he and his children had drunk from it, commending the rich resources of the well, and also its usefulness and the coolness of its water. Christ, however, did not say that He was greater than Jacob, so as not to frighten the woman, but again He spoke about the water, thus proving His superiority; for one who drank from that water, He said, would in no wise be thirsty.

The woman asked for this water, but He told her to call her husband, since His words needed to be more firmly understood. She denied that she had a husband. Jesus, knowing all things, replied: "Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands," which the Law forbiddeth, and the sixth whom thou now hast, since thou livest with him unlawfully, "is not thy husband" (St. John 4:17-18).

Some interpreters consider the five husbands to be the five books of Moses, which the Samaritans accepted, and the sixth to be the very words of Christ, which were not yet hers, since Grace had not yet been poured out upon her. Other interpreters suppose that they are the five laws given by God-in Paradise, after the banishment of Adam and Eve from Paradise, in the time of Noah, in the time of Abraham, and in the time of Moses-and the sixth to be the Gospel, which she did not yet have. There are still others who say that they are the five senses.

The woman replied to Him, calling Him a Prophet, and then asked Him about the mountain where one should worship: should it be in Somor or in Jerusalem? For the Samaritans, being imperfect in their understanding, did not believe that God existed everywhere, but abode only in that place where they worshipped, that is, on Mount Gerizim, on account of the blessings given by God in that place, or because it was there that Abraham first set up an altar to God. The Jews, likewise, also said that one must worship God only in Jerusalem, and for this reason Jews from everywhere gathered there for feasts. Christ replied that the salvation of the world was of the Jews, but that God is non-material and that those who would be vouchsafed to worship Him would do so, not with sacrifices, as they had thitherto, but in Spirit and truth, and in this way they would not only know God, but would also know Him in the Holy Spirit and in the Son; for the Son is the Truth. The woman then said: "We have heard from the Scriptures that the Messiah cometh Who is the Christ" (St. John 4:25). Jesus, foreknowing the woman's gratitude, said: "I am He." The Samaritans, too, knew about the Messiah from the books of Moses, especially from the verse, "The Lord God shall raise up a Prophet for you" (Deuteronomy 18:15), and many others.

At the conclusion of this conversation, the Disciples returned and were amazed at Christ's extreme condescension in talking with a woman. In the meantime, they besought Him to eat, both because of His weariness and on account of the heat of the day. But He spoke to them about eternal food, namely, the salvation of mankind and how they needed to harvest the labors of the Prophets.

When the woman reached the city and recounted what had happened to her, all the inhabitants were aroused and went to Christ, convinced that the woman would not have reproached herself unless she had come to know something of importance. They implored Him to stay with them and persuaded Him to remain for two days. He worked very many miracles during His sojourn there, which, on account of their multitude, are not recorded by the Evangelists.

The woman in question was the Samaritan woman, who was subsequently named Photine by Christ, and who, along with her seven sons, received the crown of martyrdom in the reign of Nero, after much hardship, in the course of which her flesh was scraped, her breasts were cut off, her hands were crushed, fine reeds were inserted under her fingernails, she was forced to swallow molten lead, and suffered countless other torments.

It should be known that the Emperor Justinian transferred from there with honor to the palace of God the Word, that is, the Great Church of Hagia Sophia, not only the mouth of that well, which he placed on a well outside the narthex, but also the stone on which Christ sat and conversed with the Samaritan woman. To this day, they remain there, healing every kind of disease, and providing remedies especially for those suffering from fevers and chills.

Scripture Cannot Be Broken

I'm watching a sermon from John MacArthur from this week's Master's College conference. It is titled "THE WORD OF GOD: THE DIVINE REVELATION TO MAN - TRUTH all provided by vicarious, substitutionary sacrificial death of a divinely chosen acceptable lamb who bears all the sins of His people by taking on himself willingly the full weight of divine punishment. It sounds like Romans in the NT. It looks like it is completely out of place."

Now, get this. He said,

"Isaiah is 66 books. It is divided the same way the bible: 39 chapters and 27 chapters. The first 39 are about judgment. The next 27 are about salvation."

"Of the last 27 about salvation, the first 9 have to do with the salvation of the nation Israel. The last 9 have to do with the salvation of the earth. The middle 9 have to do with the salvation of the soul."

"If you go to the middle of the middle 9, you get to chapter 53, and if you go to the middle of 52:12-53 you come down to verses 4,5. and 6, "He was wounded for our transgressions."The bible is a wondrous book. John 10:35 says, "if he called them gods to whom the word of God came-and Scripture cannot be broken-"

Scripture cannot be broken. It is uttered from the mouth of God through His Holy Spirit and His Son. It is easier for the world to pass away than for one jot or tittle of scripture to pass away (Matthew 5:18).

It is tightly woven tapestry that is perfect. The Law is perfect (James 1:25; Psalm 19:7). His works are perfect (Deuteronomy 32:4). Psalm 18:30 says His way is blameless. His way is perfect and His word is perfect! (2 Samuel 22:31).

Once someone said to me, "I just take a lot of the Old Testament with a grain of salt." This bothered me then and it bothers me now. You cannot take one jot or tittle away from His word and expect that the tapestry will remain woven.

Revelation 22:18-19 says "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book."

Woe to those who say "I HAVE A WORD FROM THE LORD AND I AM HERE TO TEACH IT TO YOU." No one can add to His word. WOE TO THOSE who take away from His word by claiming some part is untrue and it doesn't mean what it says it means.

It is all perfect and true. If you start picking threads out that are true and not true, or to believe or not believe, and it becomes YOU who are broken, for the scripture cannot be broken. It is perfect!

What is the point here? Read your bible. It is really good!

Religion Belief Mystery Saints

"SR. MARY MARTHA, I WAS HOPING YOU COULD HELP ME IDENTIFY THESE SAINTS (YOU'RE GOOD AT THIS). MY PARISH HAS VERY NICE PAINTINGS FOR THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS. I NOTICED THERE WERE THESE TWO CHILDREN WITH HALOS IN SOME OF THE STATIONS. THEY APPEAR ABOUT THE TIME SIMON HELPS CARRY THE CROSS AND ARE NO LONGER IN THE PICTURE WHEN JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS. THEY'RE CARRYING SHOVELS OR SPADES. WHO ARE THESE SAINTS?"

Who knows? Some artist had some idea about what symbols he wanted in the paintings. I've never seen any haloed children in any depiction of the Stations of the Cross, so it's not some common thing that we're all supposed to 'get'.

I think they're "angels." Here is why: "there can't be any saints yet". Saints are people who have died and gone to heaven. Since during the Stations of the Cross the gates of Heaven" are not open yet", there can't be any little children saints to come down and dig a garden or whatever they were planning with those shovels. Not any child saints could exist yet, not even the Holy Innocents, who would have landed in the Limbo of the Fathers.

Everyone who died before Jesus opened the gates of Heaven went to the Limbo of the Fathers. Unless they went to Hell. I think if they were headed to Hell, they went straight the Hell. I'm not sure about that, but that seems like the expedient thing to do. Certainly all the "good" people went to the Limbo of the Fathers. Then, when Jesus died on the cross and before He rose on Easter, He went to the Limbo of the Fathers and let everyone out. The Limbo of the Fathers closed.

Then Limbo was re-opened for the unbaptized babies and the Aborigines. I was under the impression that Limbo was closed for good after Vatican II, but it seems the jury is still out on that one. The official word is that the Church "hopes" Limbo is closed for good and that God in his mercy has accepted the little unbaptized babies (and the Aborigines and dead Native Americans who lived before the North American Martyrs tried to save them) into heaven. We just don't know.

And I just don't know who those children could be if they are not angels.

The bigger mystery, in my opinion, is what on earth they are doing with those shovels! Surely they aren't going to help dig the hole in which to place the cross! Perhaps they are, since Jesus' death and Resurrection is very important and must be accomplished.

I wouldn't put it past some artist to stick some child saints in there, even though they couldn't really exist yet. Here's a painting called "The Triumph of the Holy Innocents" in which the blessed children are having a fun time accompanying the Holy Family on their flight to Egypt. I'll bet not one of them asked, "Are we there yet?"

Or perhaps the artist had a fever at the time in which he painted that panel in your church. You might want to just try and track him down and ask.

The aviation world knows it well. Attitude determines altitude. Literally. Attitude refers to the way the craft is oriented in the air. If the nose of the plane is up, then the plane will go up. If the nose is down, the plane will descend.

One person I know, from whom I have learned much about staying in TODAY, says it this way, "Never let a bad moment turn into a bad day." A lot of that has to do with attitude. Am I looking up or looking down? Is my focus on the positive or the negative? Am I looking at my circumstances - or at how great God is? Even if I am looking toward God - a higher plane (pardon the pun) - do I really believe He has my best interests at heart, or do I believe that He's just waiting for me to screw up so He can thump me? That's going to determine my spiritual altitude.

So much to unlearn.

Como Se Forma O Crculo Mgico

O Circulo Magico na WiccaEm outro t'opico, algumas pessoas comecaram a discorrer sobre o Circulo Magico, do que 'e feito, como se forma, se pode ser rompido.

J'a vi muita gente fazendo esses tipos de questionamentos: por que necessitamos de Circulo se tudo 'e sagrado?

O tracado do c'irculo 'e uma t'ecnica m'agica. Ok, tudo 'e sagrado, universo 'e o Corpo da Deusa e 'e sagrado, cada um de n'os idem, mas vc indiv'iduo n~ao pode reunir condic~oes de modificar o macrocosmo diretamente. O operador de magia, no caso a sacerdotisa ou sacerdote wiccaniano traca o Circulo Magico como uma forma de magia simpatica, ou seja, utilizando o principio holografico de que tudo que existe no todo existe em cada uma de suas partes.

Assim, o Circulo se forma para que a bruxa ou bruxo poss agir no microcosmo, a fim de modificar o macrocosmo. O microcosmo tem muito maior condic~ao de dar ao operador da magia o acesso e controle `as variaveis que participam do C'irculo, facilitando que sua vontade consiga a colaborac~ao dos elementos para operar e modificar a realidade do dia a dia.

O Cone de Poder tem sim que romper o circulo, jorrar para fora dele, pois representa justamente a comunicac~ao ao macrocosmo de tudo que foi feito, determinado e modificado no microcosmo do circulo.

Por que 'e necess'ario tracar circulos na WIcca?

Porque cada sistema magico tem seu proprios par^ametros, e sua ritualistica 'e, por assim dizer, a linguagem que os seres envolvidos nesse processo compreendem.

Deuses, os Antigos, os elementos, reconhecem a "linguagem" da Wicca apenas pelo uso de seus m'etodos. Assim, ningu'em que pretenda fazer um ritual wiccaniano pode deixar de tracar o Circulo M'agico.

Faze-lo seria como tentar falar portugues, por exemplo, sem usar nenhum pronome, ou nenhum verbo... Mudando a linguagem, muda tudo.

Ou seja: n~ao existe pratica de wicca sem tracdo dde circulo magico. E nehuma considerac~ao logica pode mudar esse dogma wiccaniano. os ritos, a magia o culto aos Deuses Antigos ocorre dentro do Circulo magico, n~ao fora.

Outra coisa: o C'irculo 'e sim um local entre os mundos, literalmente, n~ao apenas simbolicamente.

H'a infinitos mundos no universo, cada um deles com sua realidade especifica, regras especificas, habitantes especificos. Este que chamamos realidade habitual 'e apenas um deles.

Magia s'o ocorre quando nossa consciencia e vontade podem acessar algum outro mundo e ao trazerem de l'a uma especifica energia, mudarem este mundo.,

O Circulo M'agico tem essa func~ao: ele cria uma Encruzilhada de muitos mundos, 'e isso que 'e o Entre mundos. Quanto `a quest~ao do que rompe ou n~ao um Circulo, as respostas podem variar muito. Um circulo pode ser criado com limites fisicos ou n~ao. Os que n~ao tem limites fisicos s~ao bem mais dificeis de serem quebrados. Quando se fala que um circulo foi rompido o que se quer dizer 'e que aquela separac~ao que cria o microcosmo de acordo com a vontade de quem tracou o circulo foi "contaminada" por outras energias, ou seja, n~ao esta mais presente apenas a energia do microcosmo, outras variantes podem ter ingressado. Isso pode ser resolvido com o simples retracado do circulo, sem maiores problemas

Ao dizermos que o cone rompe o circulo, estamos sendo um tanto imprecisos. Ele n~ao rompe, ele 'e jorrado propositalmente para fora do c'irculo. esse ato volunt'ario que faz o cone jorrar do c'irculo 'e que chamamos de "elevac~ao do cone de poder". Ap'os a elevac~ao do cone o Circulo continua integro, porque ele j'a 'e construido para esse fim. Por coisas assim 'e que n~ao se pode criar outra ritualistica, mas sim seguir as bases minimas que constituem a wicca, proque tudo isso j'a esta previamente implicito.
