Physical Baptism Versus Spiritual

Baptism from a Slightly Different Perspective.

I recently found myself in a debate with two men, one a member of the Southern Baptist persuasion, and I was somewhat shocked to discover how similar their arguments and rationale style matched the methodology of the cults. Dire warnings were dished out should one fail to undergo baptism or meet with others of like mind in a church corporate setting, even though they prefaced these things with the mandatory, "they are not really required for salvation".

Like the sabbath to sabbatarians, baptism is the distinctive of choice for the Baptists. And, like the sabbatarians, they hold to their distinctive with a rabid and fierce dedication. During our brief encounter, Matthew 28:19-20 was cited as their proof text for teaching and insisting people be baptized in water before they are fully fledged members in good standing within the Baptist world.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

To their way of thinking, to neglect to put people under the water is to neglect a command of Christ's directed to the church.

I have no doubt that Jesus worded what He said here in such a way knowing full well people would interpret this to mean water baptism.

Three baptisms are touched on in the NT Scriptures: a baptism into water, a baptism into or by the Holy Spirit, and a baptism of or into fire.

Note in the passage cited above and used as a proof text by the Baptists that there is no mention of water. It is implied. It is assumed.

I had a discussion about this very thing with a Baptist minister a few years ago, and painted this scenario. A person who perhaps does not have a real grasp of the gospel undergoes baptism in water and is now accepted in full membership within the Baptist church and allowed to partake of the Eucharist as a result, and another comes in who has a full grasp and understanding of the gospel who has been baptized by/into the Holy Spirit, but has not been baptized with water. This one is not allowed to participate in the Eucharist, who is one who actually belongs to God, whereas the other who does participate in the Eucharist does not belong to Christ, and is in fact a tare.

The suggested "solution" was typical and unsurprising. The one with the Holy Spirit should undergo water baptism. That solution solves nothing when it comes to the spiritual understanding of an entire denomination.

Shall we apply a little further critical thinking to the matter by carefully examining the concluding statement found in the book of Matthew?

What I glean from the Baptist perspective is that they see a command from Christ to "get people wet" to be of greater importance than preaching the gospel. The primary focus and aim is to increase the numbers of Baptists. Those of you with a background in Armstrongism will recognize this methodology and practice immediately. The average Baptist at this point who might read this is probably scratching his head in bewilderment.

What happens when a person hears the message of the true gospel, according to Scripture? The answer is in Acts chapter 10. There is a "baptism" as a result. Into water? No, into the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. - John 14:23

So, which makes more sense to the reader? Jesus was admonishing His followers, His disciples, to go into the world teaching/preaching and baptizing "believers" in water, with a somewhat vague regard to what was to be taught and preached, or to go out into the world, teaching and preaching the gospel, resulting in people being baptized into the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? I would point out here that the narrative in Mark 1:9 regarding Jesus' baptism in water states:

And it came about during those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized in the Jordan by John. - Transline Translation.

"In" here can be translated "into". Jesus was baptized "into" the water of the Jordan.

I am not advocating any abandonment of water baptism. I merely question the motive of the person or church that demands it. Christianity was supposed to be a religion that divested itself of legalism; a "letter of the law" religion based on "do this" and "don't do that." To claim one MUST undergo water baptism is to subordinate the gospel.

One might be tempted to argue Jesus underwent baptism in water, and claim we are to follow His example. Why though did Jesus have John baptize Him? The Pharisees were the ones who began the practice of having gentile converts to Judaism undergo a witnessed baptism or washing because of their former lives being cut off from God and sinners. John was instructed by God to baptize Jews - the implication being they too were sinners, just like the gentiles; something that didn't sit well with those Pharisees. My Baptist antagonist also brought up the laying on of hands in relation to receiving the Holy Spirit. My reply to him that prior to Acts chapter 6, Jews were receiving the Holy Spirit without regard to this.

I'm very uncomfortable now when people insist on the observance of physical things/rituals. They might as well advocate ministers wearing robes with little white stars on them and that they wave and stab in the air with a stick or wand while reciting various incantations. There is nothing magical about water baptism or laying on of hands. We can focus on these physical things, or we can look at the bigger, spiritual picture.

Self Centering

This past week has been a lesson in Self Centering for me. Sometimes the lines between being "of service" and being expected to do something can look similar on the outside, yet they are very different energies on an inner level. When does helping turn into a disservice to others?

My big clues were that I was beginning to feel resentful and angry towards some people in my life circles, I'm usually a down to earth, level headed kind of gal, I have an easy going nature, and generally have a positive outlook on life. When bitterness creeps in I know something is very unbalanced and I need to take a good look at where the roots of these feelings originate. It's not a pleasant or easy process to dig through the stuff, fortunately I am blessed to have a counsellor who is not connected to my life in any other way, and she provides a non partisan view that helps me out a lot.

Exploring the layers of emotion I realised that a pattern had formed, and that there were two parties involved, my conflicted self and the persons related to the issues. For an event to recur all the participants need to agree on some level to keep it going, the scenery and the players may change yet the general theme becomes persistent, it may play out in a hundred versions until you notice what's happening. For me, the production goes like this. Someone asks for my assistance, I like to be helpful so provide the help, the first time I don't expect compensation because it's time freely given. The person asks if I can lend a hand again and promises to pay when some money comes in, I oblige because I think everyone deserves a break. The same individual requests me to help out again, often has not compensated me for my time and effort and continues to promise to pay at a later date, I say okay. This continues on, the help becomes expected or the person feels entitled to it, I have conditioned myself to keep repeating and the other person to have expectations.

I acknowledge this awareness is part of my personal growth and it can be tricky to really see what is happening, blaming others doesn't work, what am I doing that contributes to the cycle? I got to thinking how the Goddess is the Mother of all, and how her law is love; the only thing she asks is for me to embrace what is best for my life, and to work towards creating the life I desire. So what is best for me?

Allowing people to take advantage because I feel empathy is in no way respecting me, it actually devalues my worth. My first step was to look at the areas of my life that were generating these feelings. One continual annoyance is around transportation issues, I don't mind offering a ride depending on the circumstances; however it has morphed into an exercise in frustration on some levels. There are people who are regular passengers, in some cases for over three years, they promise payment whenever some money comes in. In time I do receive some money and am thankful, however the amount paid and the true cost of providing rides has no relationship and I am the one who absorbs the expenses. I decided to take my power back and stop this cycle by changing my behaviour, so I informed my regulars no gas money, no ride. As you can imagine, I sure got some waves of resistance, everything from guilt trips, I was being unfair, I was preventing participation in events, it's my job as a priestess, you are punishing me, its not my fault I am broke, you are driving there anyhowyada, yada.

I did feel guilty and unhappy at first, and wondered if I was being unnecessarily cruel towards these folks; the incoming responses really enforced that. When I felt really vulnerable to caving in, I let myself feel the emotions and recited the Charge of the Goddess, especially the part about "keep strong your highest ideal and strive ever towards it, let naught stop you nor turn you aside" it gave me courage and strength. I was able to close my eyes and meditate and I found what I needed within.

I understand it is not my responsibility to keep bailing people out, in fact by continually helping all I am doing is providing a band-aid; my actions keep the cycle repeating, and the resulting feelings of resentment at the expectations do have powerful potential to damage some friendships. I also know each person needs to learn how to manage their own resources whether financial or not. It's also clear it's all about choices, with taking the action of buying a product or participating in an event I am agreeing to the consequences of that act, even if it means peanut butter sandwiches are my staple food for a while. If I know something like full moon ritual occurs every month, and that I need gas money, and it's important for me to attend, what is my priority? What do I prefer, those takeout coffees or going to ritual? We all need to choose what is important to us personally.

You probably have heard the saying "The Universe Provides", yes it does! However, if the Universe continually provides through the generosity and at the expense of other people, the scales are not in balance for the giver or the receiver. The out breath and in breath are both important to the continual flow of life, one cannot exist without the other, and so it is with all things. It's good to take a look at your life and see what is working and what isn't, and by honouring yourself you also honour the Gods.

"IS WORLD PEACE POSSIBLE? GLOBAL IMPLICATIONS FOR A 3 PRINCIPLES PSYCHOLOGY"

WE SUSPECT THAT SOME KIND OF A "PEACE MOVEMENT" has existed probably since the beginning of human warfare. Many people share peace as an ideal: there are peace marches and demonstrations, peace organizations and peace accords. However, the world as a whole does not seem, despite these noble efforts, to be any more at peace!

It has been said that we must "be the change we want to see in the world." And having observed our own lives and minds, we humbly notice how often we are "not "peaceful... with ourselves, with our spouses and loved ones, with neighbors, strangers, and fellow drivers on the road. Until humanity becomes peaceful on the "inside", true and lasting peace will not manifest "out there." Of this, we are certain. "Peace" movements have not gone far enough to shift human beings, at the psychological level, into "peace of mind."

We quote Lao Tzu, above, not just because Ami is half-Chinese (!), but because our work is in sharing an understanding of the profound role of Thought in human perception, feelings and behavior. Lao Tzu was pointing to a kind of freedom, or flexibility of Thought that leads to an enlightened mind, and thus enlightened behavior.

WHEN WE BECOME ATTACHED TO OUR WAY OF THINKING-when we believe our own judgments and opinions, assumptions about others (and ourselves), we become vulnerable to fear, division, anger and conflict. Thought also creates desire, and the idea that we are not complete without something outside of us that we "need" to make us whole: power, territory, money, "love," even security-emotional, physical or military.

When we are rigidly attached to religious, ethnic or cultural ideas (thoughts) about "others," or to the exclusive rightness of our own "way," the door is wide open for ego, irritation, argument, conflict, violence and even war. And while all that is true, it is also our position that people are not "too" religious, but fundamentally "not religious enough "to generate sustainable peace among people.

At the heart of every major religion lie what we see as not concepts, but "absolute" truths about spirituality and human beings, which-if adhered to "religiously"-would indeed bring about world peace... and enable people of different cultures and religions to live in harmony. All of the major religions (with which we are familiar) point to a common humanity or SAMENESS about humans. If we all deeply recognized and felt this SAMENESS, love and compassion, selflessness and peace would manifest in our outward behaviors. Anger and conflict would lessen. Understanding, forgiveness and "dropping the past" would be the norm.

However, attachment to our thinking and a sense of feeling insecure or threatened because we identify with, or "own" our thoughts, causes humans to attack one another-and this is what we see in the world today. Frankly, this is what we see in homes and offices, classrooms, bus stops and on the freeways today.

We feel grateful to have stumbled across common principles, first articulated by Mr. Sydney Banks, that we believe UNDERLIE ALL HUMAN CONCEPTS (THOUGHT FORMS), FEELINGS AND BEHAVIORS... and that connect us all... "WITHOUT "REFERENCE TO RELIGION OR CULTURE. Meaning, students and clients resonate with these principles no matter what their spiritual or religious, ethnic or cultural leaning (or lack ther). And still, they speak directly to a fundamental or transcendent intelligence that flows through us all.

We have observed over decades of learning and sharing these "Three Principles" across ages, cultures, classes and religions, that the neutrality and neutral language of these principles helps people connect to the ideas or meanings behind the words, without getting caught up in the words themselves. Because these principles are formless, there is literally "nothing to hang your hat on" here. They are accompanied by no ritual, no method, no baggage, no organization, no duty nor particular responsibility-except to listen deeply to, and be true to Oneself.

MIND: All human beings share in being a part of, and connected to Mind, the universal Life energy and source of intelligence beyond the brain. Because of Mind, we share in an endless flow of wisdom-each of us equally capable of being wise.

CONSCIOUSNESS: All human beings share in the principle or fact of Consciousness. We experience life. We also experience life from different "levels" of consciousness-from truncated and fear-based, angry and insecure "levels" to grounded, secure, safe, wise and even enlightened states (Buddha Mind, Christ Consciousness, the "Father within," the Kingdom of Heaven.) If humans lived even a little more often in this last state of mind, THE IMPACT ON WORLD PEACE, FROM A PERSONAL TO A GLOBAL LEVEL, WOULD BE SIGNIFICANT.

THE PRINCIPLE OF THOUGHT, AS A UNIVERSAL FUNCTION, guides humans either toward or away from non-violence, love and compassion. The existence of a personal thought system, or "ego"-which we see as simply being a sticky attachment to, or identification with "thoughts"-trips up our noble aspirations for peace. Yet we have found that teaching people about the NEUTRAL FACT OF THOUGHT, and how it creates reality for each of us (rather than attempting to change "content"), allows people to shine the light of this principle on "all" their thinking. Levels of consciousness jump as people gain understanding about the "formless source" of all ideas, beliefs and opinions.

When humans understand that A THOUGHT IS JUST A THOUGHT, just a creation from formless energy, the iron grip the ego can have on us begins to lessen. Lighter, gentler, more inspired "feelings" arising from impersonal, or universal "thoughts "create kind and selfless behaviors. We begin to realize we are so much more than our limited thoughts. So much more than we ever "thought"! While respecting our own and others' traditions, cultures and preferences, WE SEE BEYOND THE FORMS THAT HUMANS HAVE CREATED-and to the deeper truth of our common divinity, our shared existence in universal Mind, Consciousness and Thought... or in Life. From this vantage point, there is no reason to argue, to fight, to hurt another. When I hurt you, I diminish me.

So, our personal answer is to share with people these simple principles that govern their states of mind. Because, beneath it all, ALL HUMANS ARE ALREADY WISE, GOOD, GENEROUS, KIND AND EVEN ENLIGHTENED. When the clouds of thought begin to part, they each take their unique and radiant place in being one in "six billion paths to peace."
