Divisions Citizens And The Born Again Was The Wcg Like The Kkk

There's all kind of divisions that people find themselves categorized by. Rather we like it or not we're forced into controversy by not being able to be on both sides of these divides. Fortunately some of these divides break down over time, or on account of increased understanding.

Racial divisions have polarized people on the most foolish of basis: skin color. I'm glad that Martin Luther King's criterion for evaluating a person's respectability is becoming more prevalent; this criterion being: the content of a person's character. This is an example where knowledge is wining over presumption. I'd like a little less presumption about the Kingdom of God among Christians.

I've been labeled a pre millennialist or a post Millennialist depending on which scriptures I quote out of two select collections that it seems have been considered artillery for two opposed groups to hurl at each other across their own divide. Do the scriptures truly not agree?

Well I'm a pre millennialist; but if I quote Luke 17:21 which says the Kingdom of God comes in a persons heart, it's as if I've said that the Millennium has come, and if I say: no, I didn't say that, I can expect sighs and expressions of perplexity as if I'm advocating beliefs in polar opposition to one another.

The bible is clear about Jesus coming with an army, and establishing a kingdom in which he is literally present in body, and in direct command; but the bible says the Kingdom comes in your heart; you can't just sweep that under the rug and pretend it doesn't exist. Or, I suppose, you can join the cherry pickers club and just ignore what doesn't fit some preconceived notion.

How often I have presented evidence of the errors of legalism, and pointed out the Old Covenant contaminant within one's version of New Covenant Christianity, only to see the eyes glaze over and spasmodic seizures of venerable leader quotations erupt from mouths running on auto pilot replaying well rehearsed warn out dictums virtually word for word, exactly as I've heard them since before I could understand what the words meant. They might just scrawl across their forehead in permanent marker: this is a reasoning free zone.

I lived with a Herbert Armstrong wanna be back in the 80"s. He had the head bobbing thing down pat, the booming voice, and GTA's talent for mockery. Mocking the followers of "churchianity" was a standard post Sabbath service fixture, and woe to those fools who believed such tripe as: "the Kingdom of God comes in your heart." I guess you've noticed that this is a pet peeve of mine.

I was just a young guy, but I was corrupted by all those venerable old goats that I thought were so much smarter than I. We Armstrongist were the religious version of the ultra right wing (urw) redneck spouting vulgarities and venom at pinkos, punks, comies, spics, wet backs and hippies; only the objects of denigration were Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, Pentecostals, and revival meeting evangelists.

The urw rednecks, after tacking a label onto somebody, whose unorthodoxy (by urw redneck standards) could only be symptomatic of chronic communism, could be expected to have at least one bright soul among them remark that: "some one should line those bleep bleep sons of bleeps up against a wall and shoot them. This was not too different from what you might hear from certain segments of the Armstrong ditto heads during their Saturday evening bull sessions. It would be quite normal to hear some one exclaim: I can't wait for Jesus to return, he'll have those Catholics and Protestant loonies hiding under the rocks like rats running in terror from God's righteous wrath. Won't that be wonderful?

I definitely can imagine the influence of members of the KKK on young minds. I can't see OWCG as being much better. There was a local elder's wife who stated during a conversation something one wouldn't anticipate from your average diminutive, seemingly sweet house wife. The conversation rolled around to politics and race to where she found it appropriate to add a "biblical" observation. She said: "God told Israel to exterminate the evil residents of the land he gave them. The United States has disobeyed God by not destroying all the American Indians living here, and because of that, God is punishing us." Wow, what a statement, rendered in the sweet mellow timbre of an apparently classy civilized educated woman. You might expect such table talk among members of the Arian Nation, or between Heinrich Himmler and Herman Goering. This kind of attitude would have been right in tune with Hitler's final solution, yet such talk could be bandied about without raising an eyebrow.

Of course, I don't know of any nation born out of any other crucible but that of unjust war of conquest, so our world is beastly. We can't change the past, but approval in the present strikes me as being an accomplice after the fact.

The church member I lived with (I'll call him JJ) gave regular sermonettes; was considered a pillar of the local congregation, and yet could say of the "so called Christians," however euphemistically, "kill um, kill um all," without the slightest glimmer of shame, and why? Partly because they believed such "ridiculous clearly pagan ideas" as that of Luke 17:21: "the kingdom of God dwelling in your heart? Give me a break!

Particularly vile to the Sabbath evening Bull session guys (all unmarried social misfits) was anyone who might claimed to be born again, after all, John 2:6 says "that which is born flesh, is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit;" and Luke 24:39 says "a spirit has no flesh and bone as you see me have;" and Rom 8:23 says "we groan within ourselves waiting for the adoption of our body." The spiritual RPG's are launched at the "pagan born again Christian" liberally with contemptuous smiles of self satisfaction, over the divide, with unshakable confidence that the enemy has been mortally wounded.

JJ had put on display, on a stately wooden plaque, a very large darning needle mounted horizontally with an inscription below in large letters reading: "Born Again Checker." JJ would often proudly proclaim that anybody who walked through his door, and made the ridiculous claim of being "born again," would be immediately probed with this handily available test instrument to discover if this is so, since according to John 3:8 "the wind blows wherever it pleases, you hear the sound, but cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit." Notice the phrase "born spirit," and compare that to 1Pet 1:23, "For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living enduring word of God." What did that verse say? We've gotta cherry pick that one out right now. Can't be the bible talking. Sorry, it is.

Born again is from "anagenenn emenoi" (G313): having been regenerated. It's the same basic word as in 1 Pet1:3 "... according to his abundant mercy has begotten us. Begotten (G313) here translated in the interlinear as "up-generating." Jesus appeared as a man, if you don't admit that Jesus was God, there are plenty of other manifestation of God in the flesh in the Old Testament. Jacob reported that he wrestled with God manifest in flesh (Gen 32:30), "for I have seen the face of God and lived." The question is: was God 'down generated'? Or perhaps the body is not the criterion for reckoning if one is of corruptible seed or eternal. If God reckons the re-generation of a man to be at the point of reception of the incorruptible seed, then the born again checker will not determine the truth; it might only lead to an emergency visit to the local proctologist.

It appears that some people have jumped to the conclusion that to be born again (G313) 'up-generated', is the same thing as "born of the spirit", where the word born is (G1080) Gennao. If this is so, than a running controversy has been the result of a simple error. 'Born again' and 'born of the spirit' must be different, or the bible is contradicting itself.

In parallel to the inability to physically test for the state of 'up-generating', is the ability to physically determine ones citizenship. The patriarchs of old admitted to being alien residents of planet earth (Heb 11:13) "all these... they admitted they were aliens and strangers on earth." Can there be a vacuum of citizenship? And why can't a Christian be a citizen of the world? Eph 2:1-2, " As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, v2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient." To be a citizen of a country is to owe allegiance to its ruler, is the prince of this world the ruler we want to recognize? So it should be clear why a Christian can't be a citizen of the world.

If you are not a citizen of a country that you live in, you still must obey its laws, but allegiance is another matter. Can some one be a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven and a citizen who owes allegiance to the prince of this world? Dual citizenship may be permitted to people who, as an example, were born in Canada, but have at least one parent with a US citizenship; but these nations are not at war. Can you imagine this kind of arrangement between mortal enemies? Jas 4:4 "You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God."

I need to point out that the above verse, miss-applied, has been responsible for enormous suffering. There's a great deal of difference between being a friend of the world and being friends of people living in the world. This verse made my childhood a living hell. To be 'friends of the world' is to be friends of the prince that is its personification i.e. Queen Victoria stating: "I am England."

Some people may be so in tune with this spirit, and hostile to the King of Heaven, that being a friend may be difficult. Fortunately Jesus didn't shun folks who weren't on the same page as himself, or who lacked Godly love or Godly faith, which results from Gods spirit. He went to those he characterized as being in need of a physician, and certainly suffered the cross for all of us yet in our sins. How's that for not shunning the "worldly." OWCG made an art out of shunning people. I have to observe that if OWCG was judged by the criteria of "fruits of the spirit", not many would have proved acceptable. Fortunately we don't need to be accepted based on our own righteousness.

Peter repeats three times that Christians are strangers in the world. 1Peter 2:11 "Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world;" 1Pet 1:1 "To God's elect strangers in the world;" 1Pet 1:7 "live your lives as strangers in reverent fear." How can we be strangers? We were born in this world, and in this world we remain.

If some one were, for example, born to military personnel in Japan, the child is not given dual citizenship status. The child is a US citizen regardless of never having set foot on US soil. So why is it hard to imagine that a person born in this world could not be a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven.

There are certainly noticeable earmarks of citizenship incumbent upon a Christian. A citizen is required to pay taxes, and the citizen of heaven is required to: (Matt 6:20) "store up for your selves' treasures in heaven." Just like paying Social Security, but a much better investment.

A citizen of a nation has an obligation to resist that nations enemies; to sacrifice themselves for the good of the whole; and in times of peril, to serve in whatever way the government may require. The citizen of heaven, in like fashion, is also required to sacrifice ones self (Rom 12:1 The KJV most accurately matches the interlinear) "present your bodies as living sacrifices;" and as I said earlier, a citizen is obligated to obey the laws of their country.

In the times of the supremacy of earthly kings, the king was frequently the personification of law. He or she was the state. So is it any wonder that the law of written codes is not forwarded as a requirement of the New Testament; but instead, belief, faith and obedience to the single person of Jesus, the Eternal King, is the focus; so every word out of Jesus mouth is the Christian law. And what did Jesus command: John 15:17 "This is my command, love each other."

The New Testament says in 1Cor 13:4-8 " Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. V5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. V6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. V7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." V8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away."

This is the law of the Kingdom of Heaven. It's a law I don't keep very well, so I'm thankful for the Lord (yup, I can say the word now without it catching in my throat) allowing his children to be a 'work in progress'.

This is the law that is incumbent upon the citizens of heaven, whose document of citizenship is printed on their hearts. This is a law which describes the character of the Kingdoms King, and a good law that the citizens of heaven recognize as paramount and supreme, and the familiar quality by which its citizens recognize the Sheppard's voice.

This rambled around a bit, I just went with the flow, but I hope I actually got to the main issue.

A final note to xHWA, in response to the question: "what does "my kingdom is not of this world" mean to me?" My thought is: neither are its citizens, we're just kicking it here for awhile.

Who Is This Jesuit

This Jesuit received his BS at the Stevens Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer.. He returned to Stevens Institute and, after receiving the degree of Mechanical Engineer (ME), was employed as a foundry engineer for the International Nickel Company until 1950. It was during these years that he first became interested in issues concerned with science and religious faith. He entered the Jesuit Order in 1950. After three years of studies in spirituality along with courses in Latin and Greek, he received the MA degree in philosophy at Boston College. The title of his thesis was Modern Science and Creation in Time. He received the PhD in physical inorganic chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 1961 and then went to Woodstock College in Maryland, where he studied theology for four years, and was ordained. During the final two of those four years at Woodstock with two other Jesuit seminarians he completed a NASA supported study of the nuclear resonance fluorescence (M"ossbauer Effect) of tektites supplied by the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Smithsonian Institution. After one year (1965-66) of studies in spiritual and ascetical theology, he was awarded a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship to Ohio State University where he participated in a research program concerned with the physical chemistry of igneous rocks. Since that time he has taught in the chemistry departments at Loyola College, Johns Hopkins University, and Wheeling Jesuit University, where he was Rector of the Jesuit Community; also in the theology departments at Loyola, Wheeling and Georgetown University. We had a Class on Babalon and an Astrology class on Aries by Soror Theodora. The rest of the classes we rescheduled so we could sink our energy into the Holy Season. Masses were joyous as folks came out to see both the sun, (along with a few sprinkles) and each other.

Early in Aries, Sister Morgana celebrated her first mass as Deacon and later in the month, Frater Copperlion did as well! Congrats you two on starting such a great journey! We're lucky to have you both.

We celebrated the entire 22 days of the Thelemic Holy Season by doing readings of chapters from the various holy books. It was truly inspiring to see all of the members come out to quietly (and in some cases not so quietly) pay reverence to our most important written words.

I was heartened to see so many of our newest lodge members and some folks who aren't even members yet come out regularly to the readings. Over all we had 5 of us who made it to all readings and a very large number who made it to almost all of them. It was really a lovely experience to bask in the beauty of the words of our Prophet with so many wonderful people.

Folks brought out their true creativity with the readings, turning them into mini rituals, dramatic readings, adding music, other poetry and audience participation. We had specially prepared foods and drinks. It was a great run!

We celebrated Frater Didymus' birthday during the readings for the Lust card and we danced the night away to celebrate Frater Andropos Troy's birthday! A hearty Happy Birthday to all of our Aries out there, Soror Isabella and Soror Theodora as well as Soror LyraSolis! The Lodge is chuck full of Aries these days and I'm happy to see the fiery energy going!

Over all it was a great month and coming up this weekend we're hosting an alternative religions class from the University of Montana who come out every year to see what the OTO and Thelema is all about. Chapter 2 Reincarnation

Reincarnation is the belief that when a person dies they are reborn. Even though you probably know what reincarnation means it is slightly different in most religions. The Wiccan belief is that when you die the Crone (discussed in Chapter 1) comes to guide you to the Summerland. It is called the Summerland because it is a place with abundance, much like the land in summer time, and you will not experience physical pain there. In the Summerland you can watch over the people you loved that are still living and you can talk with loved ones who have died and are still in the Summerland. It is also a place for contemplation and reviewing your life. You are your only judge, there are no Gods frowning upon you. The Gods are in Summerland though, just as they are in every part of life.

From each life you learn a lesson or many lessons. Every life you live teaches you something. When you are ready you are reborn and experience a new life. Your spirit remembers the lessons you learned but not your past lives. With each passing life your spirit becomes more compassionate and wise until you are as perfect as you can be. By perfect I mean that you will exemplify all the desirable qualities of a person. Because everyone is being reborn everyone else is also learning from their lives and eventually everyone will be as perfect as they can be. In this way Summerland is not the Wiccan equivalent to the Christian Heaven, instead is a place between tomb and womb. Our Heaven will be this world once everyone has learned all they can. Because we all are working towards that, every day this world we are in is more like Heaven.

Unlike the Hindu version of Reincarnation, what you are born as is not a punishment or reward for how you lived your previous life. Every living thing, from a snake to a tree, has a spirit and will be reincarnated. Each life can teach a new lesson. You may be reincarnated as a frog or as a human, or as a dung beetle. What you do in this life does not determine what your next life will be. Any pain, suffering or good fortune you are experiencing is not from a past life - it can either be teaching you something or it may be a result of the Wiccan version of Karma, the rule of three (in Chapter 4).

Intreaga suflare baptista din lume sarbatoreste, la 19 iunire 1934, centenarul nasterii lui Spurgeon. El a fost ultimul puritan. Insemnatatea lui este covarsitoare, atat pentru baptisti cat si pentru nenumaratii ucenici ai lui Isus. Milioane de buz vor rosti, cu adanca multumire, numele acestui barbat, pentru ca Dumnezeu l-a intrebuintat sa-i aduca la cunoasterea Adevarului.

Cu toate ca vocea lui a amutit acum demult, prin cele 66 de volume de predici, el mai vorbeste si astazi. Ele sunt pentru multi un izvor nesecat de binecuvantari. Toate acestea inseamna influenta permanenta a unei personalitati mari, aleasa in chip deosebit de Dumnezeu.

Sumara lucrare de fata doreste sa aduca modesta ei contributie la cunoasterea vietii, sufletului si operei acestui "principe printre predicatori".

Traim alte vremuri decat acelea in care a trait Spurgeon. Marturia lui insa este scoasa din eternele adevaruri dumnezeiesti, care nu pier si nu se demodeaza niciodata. El a vestit, ca nimeni altul- o viata intreaga - unul si singurul adevar simplu si mantuitor: credinta in Isus cel rastignit. Dominat de mai putine particularitati si de mult mai putine secrete decat au oamenii in general, Spurgeon si-a pus intreaga inima in cuvantarile si scrierile sale. Sinceritatea lui naturala, care nu pastra nimic pentru sine ci dadea tuturor toate, a plamadit din comunitatea lui, o adevarata fratietate. El putea da altoar, pentru ca sigur, capata de la Domnul cu care traia in stranse legaturi.

Daca vrem sa sarbatorim cat mai folositor centenarul nasterii lui Spurgeon, atunci sa nu cinstim geniul lui de predicator admirandu-l pana la invidie, sa nu-l veneram cu exagerarea, pana la pasiunea lipsita de orice critica dreapta, dar nici sa nu ne obosim a scoate in relief ceea ce se afla la periferia mesajului sau, ci, sa devenim ceea ce a fost el: Transmitatorii binecuvantarilor primite prin harul lui Domnului nostru Isus Hristos.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon s-a nascut la 19 iunie 1834 in Cheveldon, tinutul Esex, in sud-vestul Angliei. Strabunicii lui erau originari din Olanda si faceau parte din miile de credinciosi care au gasit refugiu in Anglia in timpul persecutiilor ducelui de Alba.

S-a ajuns la o separe a familiei lui Spurgeon de biserica de stat. Strabunicii lui erau oameni cu o evlavie curata care si-au crescut copiii in temere de Dumnezeu. Fiul lor, James, bunicul lui Spurgeon a fost timp de 54 de ani pastorul comunitatii independente din satul Stambourne.

Inca din copilarie au inceput sa se arate cele doua insusiri ale caracterului lui care l-au facut atat de renumit: iubirea neclintita de adevar si vointa de fier. Serviciul divin si citirea Cuvantului lui Dumnezeu nu le facea cu sila, ci de placere si uneori cauta un loc ascuns unde sa se poata ruga. Cateodata predica fratilor si surorilor lui.

Neobisnuita dezvoltare spirituala a copilului, starnise atentia generala. Batranii adunarii, cu fetele grave, care se adunau in casa pastorului de obicei, sambata seara, ramaneau uimiti de observatiile potrivite, pe care le arunca copilul in toiul convorbirii lor. Siguranta si indrazneala, care mai tarziu l-au facut celebru ca vorbitor, se aratau din frageda copilarie.

Odata cu anul 1849 incepu pentru Spurgeon un timp de grele lupte sufletesti. De multa vreme era stapanit de un simtamant puternic al pacatelor sale. "Ma simteam nenorocit,"- istorisea el in acea vreme - "abia mai puteam lucra. Ma hotarasem sa vizitez fiecare biserica si am inceput cu cea din oraselul in care lociuam, gata sa fac orice, numai sa ma ierte Dumnezeu. Am facut ocolul tutoror bisericilor, am respectat si respect pe barbatii care predicau in ele, totusi trebuie sa spun ca n-am auzit pe nici unul din ei predicand intreaga Evanghelie. Predicau adevaruri mari, bune, dar eu vroiam sa stiu: cum mi se pot ierta pacatele? Tocmai lucrul acesta nu mi se spusese. Voiam sa audc cum poate capata pacea un pacatos, care-si simte povara pacatelor si in locul acetei Evanghelii, auzii o predica: "Nu va inselati, Dumnezeu nu se lasa batjocorit!", care nu-mi arata calea scaparii, ci dimpotriva imi mari chinurile.

Intr-o zi de iarna, pe cand imi petreceam vacantele in Colchester, mergeam din nou spre biserica. Ningea insa atat de tare ca nu mi-am putut continua drumul. M-am oprit si am intrat intr-o sala necunoscuta. Era adunarea "metodistilor primitivi". Auzisem in multe randuri de ei. Voiam sa cunosc cu orice chip, calea mantuirii, chiar daca as fi capatat cea mai cumplita durere de cap. M-am asezat pe o banca si serviciul divin incepu. La amvon s-a suit un om slab care citi cuvintele: "Intoarceti-va la Mine si veti fi mantuiti toti cei care sunteti la marginile pamantului!" (Is.45:22). Isi pironi ochii asupra mea, ca si cand intreaga mea inima i-ar fi fost cunoscuta si spuse: "Tinere, te afli in mari nevoi. Nu vei iesi din ele, daca nu vei privi la Hristos". Apoi isi ridica mainile si striga, asa cum numai un metodist primitiv poate striga: "Priveste! Priveste! Priveste!"... - "Trebuie numai sa privesti", spuse el. Si eu vazui indata calea mantuirii. O, cum imi salta inima de bucurie! Am fost tamaduit ca si israelitii, care au privit la sarpele de arma. Asa s-a pocait Spurgeon.

Spurgeon cunoscu, de copil, biserica independenta; in timpul unui serviciu divin metodist primi mantuirea, iar alegera lui personala l-a condus la baptisti.

Faptul ca nu socotea ca ceva nefolositor stiinta teologica, atat pentru el cat si pentru altii, reiese limpede si din indemnurile spre studiu temeinic, pe care le dadea elevilor sai. Dar Spurgeon nu neglija nici stiintele generale. El cunostea si iubea poetii englezi, in special pe Shakespeare. Una din cartile lui favorite era "Calatoria crestinului", de John Bunyan. Stiintele naturale il atrageau cu deosebire si isi castigase cunostinte mari in acest domeniu.

Cand se hotari sa renunte la cultura universitare, se gandi ca ii este sortita existenta modesta a unui predicator sarac, intr-o comunitate mica. Nu presimtea cat de curand urma sa devina un predicator vestit.

Tanarul de 20 de ani, ajuns astfel pastorul unei comunitati londoneze si dupa patru luni, era un predicator iubit si stimat, la ale carui predici venea poporul in siruri nesfarsite. Dar n-a fost scutit nici de atacurile acelora care nu-l putea inghiti pe tanarul baptist, cu fata rotunda, cu limbajul inflacarat, care nu se misca in liniile vechi ale stilului demodat, care nu tinea predica fara sa nu se adreseze pacatosilor, staruind "sa se pociasa, sa creada in Evanghelie, sa priveasca la Isus si sa fie mantuiti". Unii dintre colegii lui, evlaviosi in fond, neputand totusi inabusi invidia, ii profeteau un sfarsit trist. Insa cine s-a hotarat odata sa-l asculte, era captivat de felul nou si cuceritor in care Spurgeon vestea vechile adevaruri biblice.

Intr-o duminica, printe ascultatorii lui Spurgeon in Music Hall, se alfa si Livingstone. Dupa predica, el spuse lui Spurgeon ca, in toata viata lui, nici un serviciu divin nu l-a miscat atat de mult, ca acesta. Cand se va intoarce iarasi in singuratatea Africii, nimic nu-l va mangaia mai mult ca amintirea omului lui Dumnezeu, care a facut asa o adanca impresie asupra miilor de oameni. In Music Hall a predicat numai pana la sfarsitul anului 1859.

Comunitatea lui Spurgeon crescu curand la peste cinci mii de membrii inscrisi. Alte mii de oameni, membrii ai bisericilor de alta credinta sau nuanta religioasa, veneau sa-l asculte aici. Era mereu inghesuiala la intrarile Tabernacolului.

Predicile pe care le-a tinut Spurgeon in Tabernacol, timp de aproape 39 de ani, au fost mereu noi.

In celelalte seri libere, predica si in alte parti. Pentru a se recrea, se duse intr-o vara, pentru 12 zile in Scotia. A doua zi dupa sosire, primi o invitatie pentru predica. Prietenul al carei oaspete era, pentru a-l scapa de incurcatura inchirie un iaht si calatori impreuna cu el in largul marii; pestii doar nu-l puteau ruga sa le predice.

In anul 1854 iesi de sub tipar prima predica si din ianuarie 1855 se tipari cate una in fiecare saptamana. Aceste predici se vindeau intr-un numar enorm, cu un pence bucata. Predicile se tipareau in cate 100.000 exemplare, iar una, in care Spurgeon face apologia botezului crestin, asa cum il practica baptistii, atinse un tiraj de 300.000 exemplare. La sfarsitul anului 1891 se tiparisera 2236 predici, in ordine saptamanala. Adunat impreuna predicile alcatuiesc un numar respectabil de 66 de volume. Numarul urias de predici se explica usor prin faptul ca Spurgeon a predicat aproape 40 de ani in sir, in fiecare duminica de 2 ori, numai in Londra. Cei care le citesc nu sunt numai protestanti, ci si catolici si ortodocsi.

El credea ce spune Dumnezeu: "Cuvantul meu nu se va intoarce fara rod la Mine" si credea neclintit, ca prin fiecare predica, Dumnezeu va mantui suflete; si i se facea dupa credinta lui. Aceasta siguranta neclintita era unul din semnele si urmarile caracteristice predicilor sale. Asa a predicat, intr-un local lipsit de orice podoaba, far orga, fara amvon, fara vesminte pastorale, fara seminar, barbatul ale carui buze au fost atinse de carbunii aprinsi de pe altarul lui Dumnezeu si in a carui inima ardea focul Duhului Sfant.

Completa explicatie a succesului acestui instrument ales, sta in mana Aceluia care incuie si nimeni nu poate descuia, descuie si nimeni nu poate incuia.

Activitatea lui Spurgeon, ca scriitor, este tot atat de vasta ca si cea de predicator. Cine ar dori sa cumpere toate scrierile sale, ar trebui sa se ingrijeasca mai intai de o biblioteca mare. Si oricine ar voi sa citeasca toate, ar trebui sa renunte pentru multi ani la orice lectura.

Afara de cele 66 de volume de predici, a scris mai mult de 100 de carti. Numai datorita faptului ca poseda un instinct extrem de dezvoltat de a nimeri repede si precis obiectul cel mai potrivit, fara a pierde timpul in sovairi, precum si in insusirii de a economisii, nu numai minutele ci si secundele, prin impartirea sistematica a zilei, numai astfel a putut Spurgeon sa produca atatea scrieri si opere frumoase.

Spurgeon publica adesea in foaia lui, schite frumoase, originale, din calatorie, din care nu putea sa lipseasca predicatorul. Astfel, folosi si descrierea turnului Eiffel din Paris, pentru a scrie despre mania de a se crede mare.

Pe data de 8 ianuarie 1856, se castori cu Susana Thompson. Casa din Helensburgh, in care au petrecut primi ani de casnicie, era situata destul de departe de zgomotul orasului, in plina campie, care ii oferea lui Spurgeon recreatia atat de necesara. Casnicia era foarte fericita. Era o casnicie ideala. El tinea la sotia lui cu multa dragoste delicata; ea impartasea, intelegatoare, marea lui insarcinare si participa la toate bucuriile lucrului sau, chiar daca uneori viata familiara suferea din cauza deselor sale calatorii de evanghelizare.

Baietii gemeni, Thoma si Charles, singurii copii care au rezultat din casnicia lor, crescura pentru bucuria parintilor si ii urma in credinta. Ambii devenira predicatori.

La 20 ianuarie facu ultima plimbare. In ziua urmatoare trebui sa stea in pat, din cauza durerilor groaznice de cap, si starea lui se inrautati. Doua zile mai tarziu, spuse secretariatului sau: "Lucrul meu s-a terminat". Transmise inca salutari prietenilor; dar mai mult zacu fara cunostinta si cei din jurul sau, care stateau zi si noapte de veghe, asteptara zadarnic un ultim cuvant din partea lui. Duminica 31 ianuarie, 1892, la ora 11 seara, trecu in vesnicie.

On the heels of visiting Salt Lake City's Wasatch Lodge earlier this month, I noticed a long and complimentary article today in the Deseret Morning News about MWBro. Glen Cook, the 137th Grand Master of Utah, and the first Mormon GM of that state in a century.The Grand Lodge of Utah prohibited LDS members from becoming Masons in 1925, and tensions between the two groups existed for decades. The ban was lifted in 1984.Cook said the fact that membership requires belief in a supreme being and a willingness to make obligations to fellow Masons through Masonic rituals and symbols that bear some limited similarity to LDS temple ceremonies also foster a misunderstanding of what the fraternity is, and is not."There is no question that elements of the (LDS temple) endowment and Masonic ritual are similar," Cook said. "The question for faithful Latter-day Saints is whether that makes a difference. I tend to be a rather concrete thinker."For those who accept Joseph Smith as a prophet and believe he actually saw God and Jesus Christ in vision as a precursor to restoration of Christ's ancient church, "then the rest, I would suggest, should be a corollary" of that belief."I think sometimes we spend too much time worrying about issues that don't really matter to our salvation."Nothing in LDS faith or practice precludes Latter-day Saints from becoming Masons, he said, though family and church obligations may limit the amount of time Mormon men can spend in other pursuits like Masonry."Freemasonry should be an adjunct to your faith and not a barrier to its exercise," Cook said. "I tell people that the only secrets we have are modes of recognition and the passwords. For those, you have to look on the Internet."The "Encyclopedia of Mormonism" addresses questions about the faith's view of the fraternity, noting "the philosophy and major tenets of Freemasonry are not fundamentally incompatible with the teaching, theology and doctrines of the Latter-day Saints. Both emphasize morality, sacrifice, consecration and service, and both condemn selfishness, sin and greed. Furthermore, the aim of Masonic ritual is to instruct - to make truth available so that man can follow it."The ritual resemblances between the two "are limited to a small proportion of actions and words," according to the encyclopedia, and "where the two rituals share symbolism, the fabric of meanings is different."Cook said he sees signs within the Utah fraternity that a new openness is developing toward the community at large, and toward Latter-day Saints in particular, evidenced not only by his recent installation in ceremonies that were open to the public, but also in a willingness to acknowledge the faith in ways it hasn't previously been recognized.
