As the summer comes to a close, brilliant hues of red, orange, brown, and gold bring a fiery encore performance. Rich aromas of changing leaves and rain showers tantalize our senses, and with this bountiful second harvest comes an inner urge to batten down the hatches, cleanse, and prepare for the coming months of cold and darkness. Migrating birds begin their journeys, squirrels fill their nests with stores of nuts and seeds, and humans work quickly to gather their harvests while relishing in the beauty and celebrations of the season.

Between the 21st and 23rd of September, as the God of Light is defeated by the God of Darkness and the Mother retreats in preparation for a new cycle of life to begin, the celebration of MABON - also known as HARVEST HOME or AUTUMNAL EQUINOX - begins. Mabon is centered around the theme of balance, harvest, and reaping rewards for our actions and deeds - good or bane - throughout the months prior. Magic involving security, protection, and prosperity is often conducted on this occasion of equal day and night.

SUPPLY RESOURCES AND NOTES FOR MABON:

Ideally, celebrations would begin on Mabon Eve, occurring within the fields being harvested rather than in wooded areas. Between Lughnasadh and Samhain, harvesting activities keep us busied, while games, feasting, and festivities are interlaced as often as time permits. Customarily, a portion of the bounty is left unharvested as thanks to the Earth Mother.

Social activities may include various outdoor games, attending the county fair, hay rides, barn dances, parties for canning and preserving, or a harvest parade. Traditionally, folks may have gathered to attend to the needs of a neighbor's broken fences or leaking roof, taking turns swapping labor from farm to farm.

For ritual, a rustic basket of fallen leaves may be gathered prior to the ritual (to be sprinkled within the circle later). Nuts, fruits, pine cones, and berries may decorate the westward-facing altar. A white or light blue altar cloth makes a pretty backdrop for the golden candles and bright colors of fall. The Goddess figure may be crudely crafted from ripened wheat, with the "ears" forming a crown. Chrysanthemums (sacred to the Goddess) may encircle her figure as well. Apples may be cut in half crosswise, revealing the "star" and used during ritual. Participants may choose to wear work clothing or white dresses.

HERBS AND FLOWERS:

Chrysanthemums (Marigolds), Yarrow, Rue, Chamomile, Sunflower, Oak leaves, Rosemary, Saffron, Hollyhock, Rose, and Wheat.

INCENSE:

Cinnamon, Clove, Oak Moss, Frankincense, Myrrh, Pine, Apple blossom, Sweetgrass, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Benzoin, Rosemary, and Sage.

FOOD AND DRINK:

Wine, Apple juice, Apple cider, Beer (Hops), Walnuts, Corn, Berries, Bread, Apples, Carrots, Squash, Potatoes, Meat, Fish or Poultry. Recipes may include such things as Vegetable Barley Soup with Beef, Whole Wheat Honey Bread, Apple Butter, Roast Beef or Goose, Pecan Pie, Potatoes with Garlic and Herbs, and Cornbread.

Weeks. Myrtle suffered from numerous physical infirmities, including tuberculosis and incessant hemorrhoids, and it was in part these maladies that brought her to Weeks' lecture. Her husband Charles, a Kansas City real estate man, left the event unimpressed, but Myrtle was inspired by this affirmation: "I am a child of God and so I do not inherit illness." After several months of prayer and repetition of that affirmation, Myrtle believed that she had healed herself of her afflictions. She used a new form of knowledge to recreate her relationship with the divine and, consequentially, to recreate her relationship with her body. Scholars of American religion now usually call that knowledge "New Thought." Eventually Myrtle convinced Charles of what she had learned. He would then use the techniques to heal himself of the long-term effects of a childhood hip and leg injury. Together with Myrtle, he would begin a healing practice, treating people in the Kansas City area with their New Thought techniques. By 1890, Charles' real estate business had begun to decline, and their healing practice had experienced some success. They decided to publish a magazine, first titled "Modern Thought" but soon becoming "Unity Magazine", and with that act of print culture they inaugurated what would soon be known as the Unity School of Christianity. Unity claimed, at least in its early years, that individuals possessed spiritual union with the divine if and when they possessed physical well-being in the material world. It became Myrtle and Charles Fillmore's mission to create and propagate a community focused on such a union. And their mission worked, as prayer groups begat churches, which begat associations, which begat the denominational structure that Unity operates by today. The Fillmores were also especially able to align their emerging Protestant community with market forces, and to that end they quickly institutionalized their healing experiences in order to have the widest reach possible. The magazine started as a sort of "Reader's Digest" of the New Thought movement. In their thought the Fillmores incorporated many early-twentieth century Protestant practices and norms, including prayer meetings, educational facilities, and a focus on the Bible as a source of religious authority. As the movement continued to develop, other people involved with Unity created a ministers' association to authorize ministerial licensure and standardize the movement's teachings. Other early bodily practices, such as vegetarianism and (briefly and obliquely) sexual abstinence, focused practitioners on recreating the material body as a spiritual body. While Unity was not unique in any of its recommendations, its fusion of metaphysical ideas and Protestant practices was. Myrtle and Charles Fillmore were American spiritual seekers who recognized and appreciated their past, their culture, and the role of community in authenticating experience. In "The Varieties of Religious Experience", William James insisted that the individual's feelings were the root of religion and that the tenets, rituals, and institutions of religion were but later additions that could only echo the true experience. For James, the real religious experience is ineffable, noetic, transient, and passive, all characteristics that could only be verified by the individual claiming the experience. What is fascinating about Unity is the way that it connected individual rituals with community contexts, how it conjoined the priesthood of all believers with a highly individuated metaphysics. In some sense, Unity sought to institutionalize the kinds of experiences so celebrated in James' diagnosis of the healthy-minded. The making of community is to me a fascinating and complicated element of any description of spirituality. Do contemporary American spiritual seekers enact spirituality by forming communities? I think one can make a convincing argument that the various new paradigm communities foster a contemporary American spirituality not unlike the Fillmores. Unitarian Universalists and liberal Mennonites qualify as spiritual seekers who are concerned with their communities and their relationships with the surrounding culture. In fact, I suspect that many of the members of more conventional religious groups would insist upon the very spiritual nature of their religious lives. Courtney Bender's "The New Metaphysicals" (2010) demonstrates how even those seekers who most disavow institutional life do so on the premise of previous institutional conceptions and organizational structures. The popular understanding of American spirituality is the claim that the authentic discovery of one's relationship with the larger world is a project entirely undertaken by an autonomous individual who freely chooses any philosophy or practice that seems to fit their particular life journey. For many spiritual seekers-those religious "nones" who confuse sociological survey-community itself is anathema to authentic religious experience. One need only observe the continuing use of the extremely problematic concept of "brainwashing" in reference to religious communities with which a person disagrees to understand the extent to which Americans believe that authentic religious experience can only be had or adjudicated by an individual independent of social pressure or community ritual. Spirituality is a proxy for our vision of who we wish to be, and today autonomy seems to be the superior ambition. Yet even as this is so, communities do perpetuate themselves, on terms not merely religious but also spiritual. Today, Unity churches might house Protestant-style Sunday services, complete with choirs and sermons, Buddhist meditation groups, self-help practices, youth groups, community service initiatives, singles' nights, and ad hoc discussion groups on any number of spiritual topics, frequently all under the same roof and under the auspices of a trained and licensed Unity minister. A sophisticated web site allows individuals to explore Unity on their own, while also presenting opportunities for community interactions. For most Unity adherents, the spiritual life is one of seeking and exploration, but one done under the aegis of a community of faith.

" THE SUN SHALL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS, AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THAT GREAT AND NOTABLE DAY OF THE LORD COME.

" ACTS 2:19-20"

INTRODUCTION

"How did three days of darkness (or two days) get into this discussion of the resurrection and rapture? Where did Pastor Riley come up with that? I've never heard of that before! Is he introducing some new theory? It sounds pretty crazy to me. When it doesn't happen, won't he look silly? And on, and on, and on, and on, ad nauseam!

All of these critics claim to be "Bible students," and they don't know where the three days of darkness came from...? Well I'll just be glad to show my readers. ["The critics are welcome to sneak a peak too, that is, if they are not afraid of "learning" something from an ignorant old "date setter"].

BACKGROUND

Any one who seriously studies God's Word already knows that the term, "three days," repeatedly occurs over and over and over again throughout the Bible. Many years ago I became intrigued by the many references to "three days" in the Scriptures, and made a complete study of every such reference to be found in God's word. In the course of that study I also noticed that this expression was connected with "darkness" on several occasions in God's Word. That led me to make a study of the words, dark, darkness, black, blackness, clouds, cloudy, cloudiness, night, midnight, etc. All of these words are related in different passages of Scripture. By the time I had studied each of these words, "in their context, "I was convinced that the coming Tribulation would begin with three days of total darkness over all the earth.

In this study I have neither the time nor the desire to study every one of these words over again with our readers. But I propose to give our readers a few Scriptural examples and then let you decide for yourselves. Let's get started.....

ISRAEL'S EXODUS FROM EGYPT

We are all aware of the Biblical record of Jacob taking his family down into Egypt. There they were "buried" in Egypt for 215 years. But at the end of that time, the Lord "resurrected" Israel out of Egypt, and carried them on "eagles wings" ["EXODUS 19:4..."a type of rapture?"] to their promised land just as He is going to resurrect them out of the Gentile nations of the earth in the next seven years. Read "EZEKIEL 37:1-14. "The exodus of the Israelites from the land of Egypt is then a type of both "resurrection" and "rapture."

It is absolutely undeniable that just preceding the exodus of the children of Israel from the land of Egypt ".....THERE WAS A THICK DARKNESS IN ALL THE LAND OF EGYPT THREE DAYS: THEY SAW NOT ONE ANOTHER, NEITHER ROSE ANY FROM HIS PLACE FOR THREE DAYS...," EXODUS 10:22-23. "Could this be stated any plainer? This three days of total darkness began just four days before Israel left Egypt. Any serious Bible student knows that ancient Egypt was "a type" of "the world," and God's calling of Israel out of Egypt is "a type" of our being called out of "the world."

THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD EXPLICITLY STATES THAT THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO ANCIENT ISRAEL "WERE OUR EXAMPLES and that "THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR OUR ADMONITION ["instruction], UPON WHOM THE ENDS OF THE WORLD [age] ARE COME," 1 CORINTHIANS 10:6; 10:11. "

Now it is obvious that when ancient Israel left Egypt they were making an "exodus" from that land. Then isn't it also obvious that when the resurrection and rapture of God's people living today occurs, we will be making an "exodus" from this present evil world? You know we will be! Therefore, since Israel's exodus from Egypt was "a type "of our exodus from this world, and since Israel's "exodus" was preceded by three days of darkness over all the earth, is there any good reason why our exodus from this world will not also be preceded by three days of darkness? Well...? Think about it!

THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST

I think it is more than coincidence that when Christ died on the cross for my sins and yours, His death was preceded by three hours of darkness over all the earth.

WE READ ABOUT IT IN "LUKE 23:44, "AND IT WAS ABOUT THE SIXTH HOUR, AND THERE WAS A DARKNESS OVER ALL THE EARTH UNTIL THE NINTH HOUR. AND THE SUN WAS DARKENED, AND THE VEIL OF THE TEMPLE WAS RENT IN THE MIDST. The language of the Scripture makes it very clear that this was not an eclipse. An eclipse doesn't cover or darken "ALL THE EARTH. This had to be a supernatural act of God Almighty.

THIS EVENT ALSO OCCURRED FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS THREE HOURS OF DARKNESS "OVER ALL THE EARTH preceding the resurrection of Christ, typifies three days of darkness "OVER ALL THE EARTH preceding the resurrection of New Testament believers? Again, think about it!

THE SALVATION OF SAUL ["Paul"]

ANY SERIOUS BIBLE STUDENT KNOWS THAT SAUL, ONE OF THE SPIRITUAL LEADERS OF UNBELIEVING ISRAEL, WAS SAVED WHILE ON THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS. THE LORD APPEARED TO HIM IN LIGHT SO BRIGHT THAT SAUL WAS PLUNGED INTO TOTAL DARKNESS FOR THREE DAYS. READ ABOUT IT FOR YOURSELF IN "ACTS 9:1-18, 22:6-16, "and "26:12-18. " Saul, whose name was later changed to Paul, then later explicitly stated that he was "ONE BORN BEFORE THE APPOINTED TIME," 1 CORINTHIANS 15:8, "as a "PATTERN" ["type] "TO THEM WHICH SHOULD HEREAFTER BELIEVE ON HIM TO LIFE EVERLASTING," 1 TIMOTHY 1:16. "It is obvious that Saul was in total darkness for three days- just before his salvation in Christ burst upon his restored sight. Shall there not then be three days of total darkness upon this earth preceding the salvation, sealing, and commissioning of the 144,000 Jewish evangelists, of whom Paul was a type, right after the beginning of the Tribulation?

I am well aware that some prophecy teachers want to put the ministry of the 144,000 and the two witnesses in the last half of the Tribulation. Sorry folks, it won't work. It does not harmonize with the whole revelation of God's Word at all. I have two Bible studies written out on the ministry of God's two witnesses and that of the 144,000 that I will be glad to send to any reader requesting them.

Folks, this present dispensation is going to end and the Tribulation is going to begin with three days of total darkness over all the earth, whether some want to believe it or not.

PETER'S PROPHECY

I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PEOPLE WRITE AND TELL ME "SO DOGMATICALLY" THAT PENTECOST WAS TOTALLY FULFILLED IN "ACTS 2 "some 2,000 years ago, and therefore it cannot be the time when the Lord comes to resurrect and rapture His people to glory. Oh, is that so! No! It isn't so, and now I am going to prove it.

ANY SERIOUS BIBLE STUDENT KNOWS THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME DOWN UPON THE LORD'S "CHURCH" ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST, EXACTLY AS RECORDED IN "ACTS 2. "As the Holy Spirit was poured out, just as Peter stated in verses 17 and 18, God's people, especially Jewish believers, have prophesied, seen visions, and dreamed dreams, and preached and taught God's Word ["prophesied"], and this is still going on today.

SOME COULD EVEN CLAIM THAT WHAT PETER PROPHESIED IN VERSE 19 HAS BEEN FULFILLED, ESPECIALLY IN VIEW OF THE MANY TERRIBLE WARS THAT HAVE PRODUCED "BLOOD, AND FIRE, AN VAPOR OF SMOKE.

BUT NOW TELL ME, SHOW ME, DOCUMENT IT FOR ME....WHEN DURING THIS ENTIRE DISPENSATION HAS VERSE 20 BEEN FULFILLED? WHAT DAY OR YEAR DURING THIS PRESENT DISPENSATION HAS THE "SUN BEEN TURNED INTO DARKNESS, AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD? Remember that this is to occur "BEFORE THAT GREAT AND NOTABLE DAY OF THE LORD. Well, when did it happen?

NOW DON'T COME AT ME WITH THAT "ECLIPSE" STUFF. I BELIEVE IN THE ECLIPSES, KEEP UP WITH THEM, AND HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED THAT MANY OF THEM HAVE OCCURRED ON JEWISH HOLY DAYS OVER THE PAST TEN TO FIFTEEN YEARS. BUT I DON'T BELIEVE FOR A MINUTE THAT IS THE "FORCE" OF MEANING IN THIS VERSE. WAS THE THREE DAYS OF DARKNESS IN THE LAND OF EGYPT AN ECLIPSE? IF IT WAS, WHY IS THERE NO RECORD OF A THREE DAY ECLIPSE OCCURRING IN PAST HISTORY? WELL...? WAS THE THREE HOURS OF DARKNESS "OVER ALL THE EARTH when Christ was suffering and dying on the cross an eclipse? If it was, why is there no historical record of a gigantic eclipse that literally covered "ALL THE EARTH? Was Paul's three days of total blindness caused by an eclipse? Come on folks! Folks, everyone of these seven passages in God's Word clearly suggests that the Lord is coming in the night. In the last passage the Lord clearly identifies Himself as the thief. No, He is not coming to "steal," but as a thief, to take out of Satan's kingdom what rightfully belongs to Him. He purchased His people with His own blood, and Satan has no right to hold us here against our will.

Since these passages clearly suggest that Christ is coming in the night, then how could this happen since the resurrection and rapture is going to occur all over the earth at the same time? We know that while it may be night on one side of the earth, it is day on the other side. What is the solution to this? Simple.....

IF THE WHOLE ENTIRE EARTH IS PLUNGED INTO DARKNESS FOR THREE DAYS, THEN IT WILL BE AS THE BLACKNESS OF "NIGHT" OVER THE WHOLE EARTH DURING THAT ENTIRE TIME. This final Sunday of Easter offers two textual choices. We can focus on the Ascension story, which is developed in Luke 24 and Acts 1, or we can follow the readings set out for the Seventh Sunday of Easter. I have chosen to engage with John 17, which helps give definition to the post-Easter reality. Since John doesn't have an Ascension story, "per se", this reading provides us with a glimpse at John's vision of Jesus' ultimate destiny. That destiny is to share in the glory that is God. As John 17 begins, the disciples, whom Jesus has been engaging in one last teaching session, step into the background and Jesus turns his attention to the Father, whom he addresses in intimate prayer (though we are invited to observe).

For my own denominational tradition verse 11, which speaks of oneness, is the key to this passage. Since we have made Christian unity a centerpiece of our core message, this is understandable. This prayer for unity, however, encompasses more than institutional harmony. Whatever unity might exist within the community is rooted in Jesus' prior unity with the Father.

Jesus appeals to the Father, asking that he return to the glory that was his prior to creation. Glorify me, Jesus prays, even as I glorify you. It's not difficult to read this through the lens of celebrity. Bring me fame and I'll bring you fame. While that nuance exists as an expression of the Greek word "doxa, "I don't think that's what Jesus (or John) has in mind.

In context, the word "doxa" seems to reflect the Hebrew" kabod, "which can carry the meaning of presence. Note that in verse five Jesus prays that Jesus might share in the presence of God that he had known before the world was created. This reference carries us back to John 1, where we are told that the Word was God and that this Word has become flesh and dwelt among us. By knowing - experiencing - relationship with Jesus the disciples have the opportunity to participate in the divine glory - relationship - that had existed from before this world existed.

Reading this passage in a Trinitarian manner, which I think the text allows, Jesus is acknowledging his own relationship with God, a relationship of complete harmony and unity. But he doesn't stop there - he seeks to bring the disciples into this experience of divine presence. This works best, I would think, with a relational/social understanding of the Trinity - by believing (trusting) the disciples are drawn into the inner relationship of the Godhead.

If the glory that Jesus speaks of is the presence of God, then the word here concerning eternal life needs to be understood in that context. Because the idea of eternal life too often gets linked with pearly gates and angels playing harps that it has become an unusable image many progressive/liberal Christians would rather do without the concept. Better to be content with John Lennon's vision of a world without heaven. But are these the only choices - pearly gates or no heaven?

From a pastoral perspective, not having a vision of eternity to share with the families of those who have died leaves very little good news to share. If there is no vision of resurrection to share with the congregation, most families would leave the office or the funeral or the grave deeply perplexed and bereft of comfort. Indeed, it should instructive that most cultures and religions have some sense of something lying beyond the grave. There appears to be a primal need for such a vision.

What then is John's vision of eternal life? He tells us that it is to know "the only true god, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." In other words, it involves being in relationship with the God we know in Jesus Christ. While we have a tendency to read this individualistically, in Jewish context individuals are always part of a community - that might be the people of Israel or the more compact community of Jesus' disciples, for whom John seems especially concerned at this moment. For John eternity is not out there in the future - it has already begun. The choice is ours whether we wish to step into it. What this means, as Ron Allen and Clark Williamson note, is that knowing God "is to follow the way of God (v. 3; cf. Ps. 9:10; 24:4; Isa. 45:3) that can lead to immortality (see, e.g. Wis. 15:3; Philo, "That God is Unchangeable 143). " John adapts this thought: Jesus is the way to eternal life- animation by God" ["Preaching the Gospels without Blaming the Jews: A Lectionary Commentary," p. 47]. While there is a dualism present here that we must acknowledge - one that should be troubling to us (Jesus doesn't seem too concerned about the World) - there is a message to be received in this conversation. The idea of eternal life becomes problematic when we begin to engage in deciding who is in and who is not. What I hear in John is simply the recognition that we have a choice as to whether we will embrace the message of God's realm. That said, theologically I am convinced that God will do what is necessary to reconcile all things (including all humans) to God's self. Eternity, therefore, begins now - if we're willing to embrace the message. If we're willing to embrace this message, then one consequence is that we have the opportunity to begin living lives without the fear that perfect love casts out (1 John 4:8). It is a life lived in relationship with God (vertical dimension) that gets expressed in our relationships with each other (horizontal). We see this expressed in the Lord's Prayer, where the earthly mirrors the heavenly ("on earth as in heaven").

Looking forward into the future - Jesus asks that he might return to the Glory that is God, inviting us to share in that glory. While we can interpret this in terms of a "pie in the sky" vision of eternal life, a vision that often undermines the ethical component of the eschatological vision; such need not be the case. A truly biblical vision should have earthly implications. As Clark Williamson reminds us - our choice has ethical implications. We can carry with us a sense of ultimate doom, or ultimate confidence that overcomes certain kinds of fear. THERE IS AN ETHICAL CONSEQUENCE OF OUR CHOICE, BECAUSE TO DECIDE TO BELIEVE IN THE ULTIMATE VICTORY OF GOD'S LOVE OVER DEATH, TRANSIENCE, AND NIHILISM UNDERGIRDS AND MAKES SENSE OF OUR MORAL LIFE, WHEREAS THE ALTERNATIVE DENIES THAT HOW WE LIVE OUR LIVES MAKES ANY ULTIMATE DIFFERENCE. SO THE OPTION IS BETWEEN BELIEVING THAT GOD'S LOVING GRACE WILL TRIUMPH, OR BELIEVING QUITE THE OPPOSITE, THAT IT WILL NOT. IF WE TAKE OUR CLUES ABOUT ULTIMATE REALITY AND WHAT IS ULTIMATELY REAL FROM THE DECISIVE REVELATION OF GOD IN JESUS CHRIST, WE WILL CHOOSE ONE WAY. We may not have all the details as to how this future vision will work out, but Jesus seems to offer to us the promise of a unity with God that will bring unity to God's realm - not uniformity of course, but justice revealed in love. That is, therefore, the promise of eternal life.
