The Houdini Miniseries A Tale Of Two Movies

I'll begin by throwing all my cards on the table.....This is the movie that could have been and should have been the greatest Houdini movie of all time. I think all of us in the magic community had very high hopes, maybe too high. With the History Channel's track record of fine productions, we certainly expected to get a quality film. Did we? Read on.

As far as acting, set design, costuming, cinematography, all very well done. Some of the attention to detail was incredible, like the recreation of Houdini Posters with Adrien Brody's image. As far as the story, that's where the wheels come off. The story on Night 1 was so full of errors and fabrications I was truly stunned. But then Night 2, though it still had a few errors, the movie was so much closer to the true story. It was almost as if they had been written by different people.

I'm puzzled by the copying of material from the Tony Curtis/Houdini movie. That movie was mostly fabricated, but still fun. And a number of the elements of that movie find their way into this movie. For example, the wedding night/bedroom scene where Houdini has his wife climb into a box. In the Tony Curtis movie Bess gets into a sawing in half box. In the Adrien Brody movie, Bess gets into a trunk, and it's a little unclear why.

The Original Under Ice Scene

Later in the film there is a bathroom scene where Houdini is in a tub of ice, this is straight out of the Tony Curtis movie. And the whole under the ice escape scene is borrowed as well. In Tony Curtis movie Houdini claims he heard his mother's voice and that is how he found the hole in the ice. In the Adrien Brody movie, same thing. The only difference was in the Curtis movie it was the Detroit River and a packing case escape. In the Brody movie, it was the Mississippi and a Bridge Jump.

There seemed to be less borrowing of ideas on Night 2. But there was some real glossing over of things, like Houdini's film career. It was there and gone very quickly and didn't get the amount of air time it deserved. His exposure shows were not even featured. They did show him at seances proving the mediums were faking things, but that's where it stops. In real life Houdini added the exposure of mediums to his show and from all accounts it was loved by audiences. OH and Theo, man he got the crap end of the deal, almost no air time. As for Houdini's other siblings, not a word.

Then there were some real gems in the movie as well. The scene with Houdini and his doctor near the end, wow. The scene with the Lady Doyle Seance was really quite enthralling. The scene featuring the Cannon Escape, excellent.

So where does that leave me? I didn't really like Night 1 at all. But Night 2 I really enjoyed. Now, please understand, I was watching night one through the eyes of a magician and Houdini historian. Night 2 my expectations were lowered and to my surprise, Night 2 was really quite good except for one thing. I felt a little disappointed when the movie didn't run the full two hours. I understand there is close to 30 minutes of additional footage on the DVD, but I would like to have seen it tonight.

Despite the fact I didn't care for the first nights showing, I can tell you I was in the minority. The movie had huge viewership and those are average everyday lay people.

The Houdini Bloggers saw their number of views shoot up greatly. I think John Cox with WildaboutHoudini.com was in first place hands down with 50,000+ views. I had around 10,000 views and Tom Interval reported he had an increase but didn't reveal any numbers. I'm sure the other Houdini bloggers also saw an increase of traffic on their sites so that is good.

OH, last night before the movie aired, there was an episode of PAWN STARS where Gay Blackstone was featured trying to pawn one of the original(?) Blackstone Vanishing Cages. My article on the Vanishing Bird Cage received 2000 views last night.

I spent a couple hours at lunch today with a friend who couldn't stop talking about Houdini and he is not a magician. Again, great sign. I'm really looking for all the positives from this movie at this point. I'm very grateful for the History Channel for putting this movie together, for the incredible Houdini-like publicity campaign and for all the magic-tie in commercials. The marketing department at A&E did a great job.

Yes, the movie could have been better, but it was not a total loss. Night two did a lot to salvage the movie from a magic history perspective. Remember, the History Channel wasn't making a Houdini Documentary, nor were they making this movie for the magic community. This was for the lay people and by all accounts the lay folks LOVED IT! The movie can only be good for magic and for Houdini's memory. As far as the falsehoods, well that's why the Houdini historians are out there to correct the record.

Finally, WWHT? "What Would Houdini Think?" I tend to think, with the exception of a couple scenes, he would have loved the movie. Afterall, he was the original fabricator of Houdini stories!

Wednesday In The Word A Proud Mind Vs A Humble Mind

Several years ago, I read a devotional by Pastor Paul Chappell of Lancaster Baptist Church concerning the proud mind vs. the humble mind. As I read the following list of characteristics for each mindset, the Lord pricked my heart on several points concerning the proud mind. I had to spend a few minutes in prayer, asking the Lord to root out the pride that so often characterizes my thoughts and actions during the day, and to please replace those with "the mind of Christ," a humble mind. It was high time to get real! I looked for the original devotion, but wasn't able to find it. Here are some characteristics of a proud mind as opposed to a humble mind:

A PROUD MIND

God gave me great abilities, and I know how they can best be used.

I doubt God by wondering why others are preferred or blessed before me.

I accept praise for a job well done.

I never ask for help. Instead I find a way to do a project on my own, even if this means with the wrong spirit, wrong heart, or wrong motive.

I am aggressive, arrogant, boastful, and vain.

I say, "Me first."

I welcome anger and bring up the past.

I wonder when God is going to bless me next.

A HUMBLE MIND

I know greatness is not in me, it is Christ working through me.

I praise God when others are preferred or blessed before me.

I accept responsibility for my mistakes and deflect any praise of success to my Lord.

I ask for help when I know I cannot do a project on my own.

I am courteous and respectful of others no matter their position in life.

I say, "No, you first, my friend."

I dissipate anger and heal old wounds.

I look for ways to bless others.

Re Paganism Vs The Gospel

Chuck Colson, writing for The Christian Post, writes of a murder-suicide in southern Pakistan, which was carried out by a father, killing his three daughters and himself, and intended as a human sacrifice to the Hindu deity Kali. Colson goes on to explain that this does not represent all Hindus, but rather a paradigm by which Hinduism, and larger Paganism, operates. Colson writes,

"What is representative, however, is their belief that worship largely consists in appeasing the deity. In order to obtain favor, the worshipper must offer the proper sacrifice. Get it wrong and your prayers aren't answered. Or worse."

What is strange here is that Colson seems to think that Christianity offers up a juxtaposition on an adherent's view of divinity, as presented here. As countless people the world over are now aware, through the centuries-long work of zealous missionaries, if we do not adhere to a strict set of morals, thereby sacrificing certain pleasures and behaviors, our prayers will not only not be answered, we will go to a place of eternal suffering. Or worse, indeed, Mr. Colson.

Further, sacrifice is understood in many Pagan and animistic religions to not be exclusively represented by blood, if blood is involved at all, and as maintaining a good relationship with the deity. As a friend, or a family member. I do feel personally obligated to make offerings to my Gods, but not because they will smite me, or send me to hell as with the Christian god, but because it represents a commitment to the philosophies and values they represent, as well as their influence in my life.

Colson goes on to say that,

"It [Christianity] revealed a God who was neither remote nor capricious. He wasn't driven by human-like appetites and petty emotions. He is motivated by love for His people and the good of His worshippers... This God desires 'mercy, not sacrifice,' and to prove how much He meant it, He sacrificed his only Son so as to render all other sacrifices unnecessary."

The beginning of this section is one of the most perplexing as Colson asserts that, unlike the Gods, the god of Abraham and Moses is immune to the need for sacrifice, and the resulting petty reactions of the Pagan Gods. This is is perplexing for two reasons, at least. For one, we clearly see otherwise in the book of Exodus where Yahweh himself speaks,

"Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me;" (Exodus 20:5)

If self-described jealousy of a resource that is supposedly unneeded, and the subsequent generation-reaching revenge are not indicative of petty appetites and emotions, then I don't have any idea what is, to be quite frank.

Secondly, if Yahweh was seeking a sacrifice, for unknown reasons, unneeded as they are, that would conquer death, why was death not enough? Why did Jesus not die an old man, warm in his bed? What was the purpose of torturing this man with the worst devices we have, both societal and physical? What was the purpose of executing him in one of the worst ways humans have ever devised? Was it simply less dramatic for him to die of an illness and rise again? If this god has no bloodlust, why was there so much present for this sacrifice that he supposedly has no appetite for?

Colson goes on to assert that Christianity reshaped the Western world in the best of ways, following the Christian-imposed assumption that followers of Gods before Christianity's adherents were superstitious savages, he states,

"The idea of man made in God's image revolutionized ideas about human life and ethics and provided a whole new way of seeing life in the Western world... How ironic that we in the post-Christian West are exchanging belief in the 'personal, benevolent God' of Christianity for a sanitized paganism. Whether it's 'new age' mumbo jumbo or Wicca for Dummies, we have forgotten the dread these beliefs caused our ancestors and the awful things it made them do."

What is so ironic here is that despite all of the horrors that have been committed in the name of various Pagan gods, the very values that we, even as a modern society, cherish about the sanctity of human life and ethics, disintegrated with the advent of Christianity in Europe, and the tight grip the Church would exercise over all of the Western world, including the outright destruction of all civil liberties. These values would not return until that hold loosened centuries later, and had to be rethought and invented as secular to evade the still-looming influence of the Church, and Christianity as a whole.

For all of these atrocities, Pagan worshipers knew they were killing people, goats, plants, and bad habits for their Gods. Colson seems to be unaware that when Crusaders waged war in the name of the Christian god, when the Inquisition burned any man, woman, or child who questioned the Church's authority in the name of Yahweh, and when the United States military inscribes weapons used to kill people of other religions with Biblical quotes, THIS IS THE VERY DEFINITION AND NATURE OF HUMAN SACRIFICE. I can not, and will not, condone human sacrifice, but to blame the Gods for violence and play at the innocence of Yahweh and his followers, given the mirroring track record, is a slight to my Gods that I had to answer.

Colson writes this slandering of the Gods, and does nothing to emulate the teachings of Jesus himself, to essentially say Happy Easter. Many praises to Eostre. Many praises.

Why These Women And Christ

This article asks an amazing question. Just what in hell were the names of four scandalous women doing in the lead genealogy of Matthew?

I have only leapt over that particular grind forever. Suddenly we stop and ask just what they were thinking?

I do know however, that a belief in God's providence can be found in history and seen in that history.

Just the actions of Pope John Paul II who surely was informed by this belief as were his electors and this led directly to the toppling of the Iron Curtain.

Today we witness a brewing turmoil in the Islamic world that we do not understand yet I see rising opportunity for Christianity there in a world which had blocked it out completely. I just do not want to believe it is possible. In China, the arm wrestle is now between Communism and Christianity and it is deep and wide and almost invisible. The moment it breaks the emergence will be abrupt. It is in position to assist the people to throw off the Communist ideology outright. Again I do not want to believe what I am seeing is true.

Two generations ago the emergence of a fully established State of Israel was impossible to see. It was impossible to see any circumstance that would permit a Christian resurgence in Islam. It was impossible to foresee any interest in Christianity in China. Yet this is what the prophetic strain of End Days Christianity was happily preaching. Today all those paths are open.

but that's what sells newspapers. So as sure as the sun rises, instead of talking about all the splendid things God had just done in Genesis, we would have been talking about "Applegate."

Let's look at the four ladies in Matthew's genealogy who were Jesus' ancestors. But I won't handle it the way it would be handled by a supermarket tabloid.

The genealogy of Jesus found in Matthew's Gospel is often an embarrassment to Lectors. It seems so boring, as the lector goes on and ONNNN, reciting 14 generations from Abraham to David, 14 more from David to the Babylonian Exile, and 14 more from the Exile to Christ. The names sound like a spell or incantation:

" Perez,Amminadab, Rehoboam, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, Jechoniah,Shealtiel, Zerubbabel. It's comical. It is as if a multitude of dwarfs, with strange curly beards and pointed caps, is joined together by their baby-making equipment to form a living Eiffel tower of humanity."

"But Matthew's genealogy is much subtler than you might think. For one thing, contrary to the patriarchal mentality of the time, Matthew has inserted four women into the long list of men- a fascinating innovation."

"Matthew's readers, who knew the Hebrew Scriptures well, must have been unpleasantly jolted
embarrassed, even
at finding Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba on the list. "

"First Tamar, an apparent Canaanite and apparent prostitute, who apparently seduces her father-in-law and becomes an ancestress of Jesus

Third, Ruth, a Moabite. This was a pagan tribal group the prophets Ezra and Nehemiah forbade the Jewish people to intermarry with because of their treachery.

Fourth, Bathsheba, who became the mistress of King David, and brought on a moral catastrophe which almost destroyed Israel's most beloved king.

"Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba. It's like saying the Word was made Flesh from Calamity Jane; Typhoid Mary; the murderous Lizzy Borden, and

Is it important because Scripture provides us with a systematic code of moral theology? No. Most of the Bible is not moral theology, and it's anything but systematic.

Is it important because Scripture has stories we can use at Vacation Bible School to get the kids to behave? No, not even that. Parts of the Bible are not suitable for getting kids to behave: if that were the point, the stories of Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba would not be in there.

"Scripture is important for only one reason: because it's true. It's not an "authorized biography" edited by a defense attorney and distributed by a public relations firm. Scripture has not been carefully scrubbed by the Big Man's campaign manager. It tells what actually happened. It tells the truth about men, women, families and nations. It's history."

"DREAD LORD OF SHADOWS, GOD OF LIFE, AND THE GIVER OF LIFE-
YET IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF THEE, THE KNOWLEDGE OF DEATH.
OPEN WIDE, I PRAY THEE, THE GATES THROUGH WHICH ALL MUST PASS.
LET MY DEAR ONES WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE
