Overall, the intensity level is about 25% of what it was for a decade. So, at my worst, I am much improved. I think part of this stemmed from the path working I did earlier this winter and the triangle ritual. For me, that rite is intense. Given that I am a fiery guy and it is a fire-based ritual, it is only natural it will cause some issues for me.

This morning, I performed the rite and invoked water within the form. This was interesting. I received confirmation of plans for a career change that I have been 'told' will satisfy an emotional and spiritual need. I was even given some instruction on how to do magick to aid those plans coming to fruition. Towards the end of the meditation period, which only lasted a few minutes, I was given a method to make the rite more effective by adding an angelic force at a certain location within the temple space.

I left the work space feeling very energized by fire. This I do not need in my given state but as I write I am being inundated by water. This is peaceful and cool.

This is actually a very poor definition. I am an initiated Gardnerian and I have yet to meet a fellow gard that has such a limited view of who can claim to be wiccan. Technically speaking Wicca was the term for the faith that Gardner started, so why would Alexandrian covens get a free pass? Why is Seax-Wicca not included? Seax-Wicca was founded by Ray Buckland who brought Gardnerian Wicca to America. I would think he would get the benefit of the doubt as far as started a valid form of Wicca Then you have Moshian Wicca, Greencraft Wicca, Central Valley Wicca, Algard Wicca, Minoan Brotherhood, and Minoan Sisterhood that were all founded by Gardnerian and Alexandrians and use many of the same elements.

Then we get to self-initiated and eclectic wiccans of the Scott Cunningham variety. Many of these practices are very much based off of what Gardnerian and Alexandrian do, and are not different enough to start claiming they are not a valid form of Wicca.

Definitions of terms evolve over time. Christian used to mean all of the different cults that formed after the death of Christ. Then it just referred to the catholic church, then it referred to all Catholics and Protestants then the Mormons were lumped in there too. The meaning of "Wicca" has changed too. While originally it only applied to people initiated down like of Gardner that is no longer the case.

Candy Canes And Their Meaning

I found myself in church last Sunday, being supportive of a young family member who was performing some music.

While there, I heard this story. I suppose many of you have heard or read the same story, or some variation of it during the month of December. Well here is what was said:

The Christian Origin of the Candy Cane

A candymaker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols from the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ.

He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the Church, and firmness of the promises of God.

The candymaker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior. It could also represent the staff of the "Good Shepherd" with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.

The candymaker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life.

Every time you see a Candy Cane, remember the Wonder of Jesus and His Great Love that came down at Christmas, and that His Love remains the ultimate and dominant force in the universe today.

Well the story is just not true. Candy canes were not created by "a candymaker in Indiana" who "stained them with red stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received." Candy canes were around long before there was an Indiana, and they initially bore neither red coloration nor striping -- the red stripes were a feature that did not appear until a few hundred years later, at the beginning of the 20th century:

About 1847, August Imgard of Ohio managed to decorate his Christmas tree with candy canes to entertain his nephews and nieces. Many who saw his canes went home to boil sugar and experiment with canes of their own. It took nearly another half century before someone added stripes to the canes... Christmas cards produced before 1900 show plain white canes, while striped ones appear on many cards printed early in the 20th century.

In fact, the strongest connection one can make between the origins of the candy cane and intentional Christian symbolism is to note that legend says someone took an existing form of candy which was already being used as a Christmas decoration (i.e., straight white sticks of sugar candy) and produced bent versions which represented a shepherd's crook and were handed out to children at church to ensure their good behavior:

Soon after Europeans adopted the use of Christmas trees, they began making special decorations for them. Food items predominated, with cookies and candy heavily represented. That is when straight, white sticks of sugar candy came into use at Christmas, probably during the seventeenth century.

Tradition has it that some of these candies were put to use in Cologne Cathedral about 1670 while restless youngsters were attending ceremonies around the living creche. To keep them quiet, the choirmaster persuaded craftsmen to make sticks of candy bent at the end to represent shepherds' crooks, then he passed them out to boys and girls who came to the cathedral.

Claims made about the candy's religious symbolism have become increasingly widespread as religious leaders have assured their congregations that these mythologies are factual, the press have published these claims as authoritative answers to readers' inquiries about the confection's meaning, and several lavishly illustrated books purport to tell the "true story" of the candy cane's origins. This is charming folklore at best, and though there's nothing wrong with finding (and celebrating) symbolism where there wasn't any before, the story of the candy cane's origins is -- like Santa Claus -- a myth, not a "true story."

Fictional accounts of the candy cane's religious origins are the subject of a number of colorful Christmas volumes, including The Candymaker's Gift: A Legend of the Candy Cane by Helen Haidle (1996), The Candy Cane Story by Joy Merchant Nall and Thomas Nall, Jr. (1996), The Legend of the Candy Cane by Lori Walburg (1997), and the children's book The "J" Is For Jesus by Alice Joyce Davidson (1998).

What is interesting about this little story, is that I have never met a single Christian who ever doubted that this story was true. Yet I have never met one who bothered to research it before repeating it themselves.

The next time someone tells you this story, say this: "That candymaker in Indiana. What was his name?" No one knows because the story is not true.

Would it be fair to say that as Christians, we believed all things, and thought that it was good to do so?

THE GOD OF JUDGMENT HAS DISAPPEARED, I've been looking and looking but can't find him anywhere. Not in the mountain stream or bright blue sky. Not in the clear face of the moon or the million shimmering stars. Not on the faces of my children or the roses in my garden. The god of judgment has disappeared I disappeared him.When I saw this poem, the letters were very big at the top and got smaller and smaller until they disappeared at the bottom in an inverted triangle. I realized later that it was the bottom half of the star of David...the feminine half that goes into the earth. I thought it was perfect that the god of judgment would be "disappeared" into the earth where it can be transformed into fertilizer for the growth of the new paradigm that doesn't include judgment! LATE NIGHT GREETINGS AND YOWLS, MY CUTE COOL BIG CATS... yes, summer temps on the tame prairie today after that stretch of fall-like weather... so, as usual, the Kougaress is pushing herself too hard... a hard habit to break, even with all the work this Big Cat has done to make changes... and, especially, given these times, there's just so much to do, to get done just in case... plus, the Kougaress has had to alter her life in certain ways, which means a learning curve... and on it goes.

Kittens, with world tensions exploding like a super volcano around us, and the massive problems/challenges humanity is facing... the ride on Mother Earth will just get wilder, super wild -- all while a general insanity consumes many because what is ahead is too tough to face. Changes will be rocketing fast and furious now. So staying grounded, keeping your head, being able to turn on a dime... this becomes vital to you, and your loved ones. Yeah... the Kougaress is talking to herself here, as well.

On a positive note: Go, Iceland, go! All kudos to the people of Iceland who know how to get rid of the bankster gangsters. How to believe in themselves, and create their society and economy anew.

Steziah leisurely quaffed her Triple Moon ale. Resting on one elbow, she cast her glance around the crossroads tavern, a relatively high class establishment catering to travelers of every ilk, even the superior warriors of Arrysim called the Ruffians.

Given she was a half breed Ruffian, the leader of the clan raised his stein in a covert salute. After momentarily piercing her with his gaze, he turned toward his warrior pack.

There would be no challenge. Steziah had long ago 'proven her blade', the term for proving her worth as a fearless and to-be-feared fighter.

NOTHING MAKES SENSE... NOT THE SUN OR THE MOON... really, in these times, nothing makes sense to this Big Cat anymore. Nothing! Plus, the Kougaress noticed as she walked down to her mailbox during sunset that the sun was not where it should be at this time of year... and the moon is not where it should be, either... at least, according to how the moon was positioned in the heavens not two years ago... it is really disconcerting. And since NASA or 'never a straight answer', simply lies and deceives, and does whatever the hell it wants because it's a DARPA front, while presenting itself as an agency of the public and for the public... however, the bottom line, THOSE who know what's happening in the skies, in space, ain't telling us.

A Eunuch Disproves The Perpiscuity Of Scripture

Normally I Am Pretty Tired In Morning Mass And Don't Always Perceive Wondrous Insights From The Readings Of Holy Scripture But Today The Reading From Acts Really Spoke To Me. The First Reading Was From From Acts 8:26-40. It Was The Story About Philip And His Encounter With The Ethiopian Eunuch. The Eunuch, After Visiting Jerusalem To Worship, Was Heading Home And Reading From Isaiah. He Was Trying To Understand The Bible On His Own But He Couldn't.

And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot."

So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE READING?"

And he said, "HOW CAN I, UNLESS SOME ONE GUIDES ME?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

Philip Then Enlightens Him With Spirit-led Catechesis (teaching), With The Result That The Eunuch Wishes To Be Baptized. The Word Had Stirred His Heart And Caused Him To Desire Conversion.

Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture HE TOLD HIM THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS.

My Conclusions From This Plain Reading Of Scripture Today Are:

1) A Person Alone Can't Always Understand The Bible Alone. The Perpiscuity Of Scripture Is A Dubious Notion At Best. Clearly The Bible Is Best Interpreted Through An Authority And Who But The Apostles Of Christ And Their Successors Would Have The "best" Interpretation?

An Interesting Aside From This Little Story Is That It Shows Us The Normative Method Of Conversion For The Early Post-resurrection Church Was Baptism In Water. There Was No Mention Of A Sinner's Prayer. If Baptism Is Just Symbolic And A "add On" Why Didn't Phillip Simply Get The Eunuch To Recite The Sinner's Prayer And Let Him Go At That. After All, There Was No One Around To Witness The Baptism, So The Idea Of Baptism Being For The Purpose Of A Public Testimony Was Pretty Useless Here. Baptism Was The Way In Which This New Believer Was Made A Member Of The Body Of Christ.

*Perpiscuity Of Scripture: A Belief Begun In The Reformation That The Bible Is Clear, Self-interpretive And Easy To Understand, Therefore Requiring No Teaching Authority. Many Modern Day Fundamentalists And Evangelical Christians Hold To This. The Reality Is That They Really Don't Because They Read The Bible Through The Interpretive Lens Of Their Own Magisterium, Their Pastor, Their Denomination's Confession Etc. They Just Won't Admit It. The Reality Is That Everyone Has A Magisterium! Catholics Just Admit It And Are Thankful For It.

As Jews worldwide prepare for Purim, few realize that had there been newspapers at the time of Mordekhai and Ester, the headlines would have read something like "Rabbis Reject New Holiday", "Mordekhai Blasted as Reformer" or "Council of Torah Sages Fears Gentile Reaction".

No, this is not "'Purimshpiel". This is absolutely for real - and the facts are recorded, quite explicitly, in the Meghillah (the Book of Ester) and the Talmudh.

Purim: a New Paradigm

Torah sages are by nature conservative. Prior to the events of Purim, the only festivals known were those mandated in the Torah. When a respected Jewish leader (Mordekhai) and a young Jewish woman (Queen Ester) insisted that a new festival be instituted, and that a new book be added to the Bible in its honor - a revolution in the spiritual life of the Jewish people was set in motion: "Forty eight prophets and seven prophetesses arose in Israel, and they did not add to nor detract from that which is written in the Torah with the exception of the reading of the Meghillah" (Babylonian Talmudh Meghillah 14a).

Many of the Sages were opposed to the newfangled notion of Purim as we learn in the Babylonian Talmudh (Meghillah 7a): "Ester sent [a letter] to the Sages: 'Establish me (i.e. Purim) for future generations'. They replied: 'You will only cause us strife with the Nations!' (who will say that we rejoice at their downfall - Rashi). She replied: 'I (i.e. the events of Purim) am recorded in the royal archives of Madhai and Persia' (and the Gentiles will in any event know - Rashi)..... Ester sent [a second letter] to the Sages: 'Write me up for future generations' (i.e. add the Meghillah to the Bible)".

It would seem, based on this Babylonian account, that fear of the Nations was the Sages' major concern. However, as is often the case, it is the Jerusalem Talmudh that elucidates the core issue:

...R. Shemuel bar Nahman reported in the name of R. Yohanan: 'Eighty five sages, over thirty of whom were prophets, were greatly vexed by this matter [of instituting Purim and including the Meghillah in the Bible]. They reasoned thus: It is written: 'These are the Misswoth that HASHEM commanded Moshe' (Wayiqra 27:34). These are the Misswoth we were commanded by Moshe, and thus said Moshe: 'No other prophet shall henceforth introduce something new'. And [yet] Mordekhai and Ester wish to innovate?! They continued to consider the matter until the Holy One Blessed be He opened their eyes, and they discovered [that a source for Purim] was hinted at in the Torah, the Prophets and the Writings..." (Meghillah 1:5).

The Crux of the Matter

Fear of gentile reaction was, evidently, a partial excuse at best. The crux of the matter was a clash of Torah philosophies: was halakha sacrosanct and immutable, or could it occasionally evolve to fit the necessities of Torah life, to better to serve HASHEM's purpose and the needs of the Jewish people?

These two schools of thought have coexisted throughout our history. The most obvious examples, perhaps, are the sages Hillel and Shammai and the two schools they founded. The School of Shammai was conservative with a rigid halakhic approach. The School of Hillel was more lenient and willing to consider innovation.

The Mishnah relates that when Hillel saw the plight of the common people who were unable to receive loans from the wealthy classes due to the approaching Sabbatical year (when all loans would be forfeit) - thereby nullifying the Torah commandment "If there be among you a needy man, one of your brethren, within any of your gates, in your Land which HASHEM your God gives you. You shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand against your brother in need. Rather you shall surely open your hand for him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need" (Devarim 15:7-8) - he introduced the radical reform known as Prozbul, which turned over the debts to the beth din (Jewish court) and enabled the circumvention of the annulment of debts (Shevi'ith 10:3).

The Split and the Royal 'We'

The Purim episode resulted in a split among the Sages, which fact is alluded to in the following statement: "'For Mordekhai the Jew was second to King Ahashwerosh, great among the Jews, and accepted by the majority of his brethren' (Ester 10:3) - 'the majority of his brethren' and not his all his brethren. This teaches us that some of the Sanhedrin [i.e. his brethren] distanced themselves from him (Mordekhai)" (BT Meghillah 16b).

If the truth be told, Purim only entered the Jewish calendar due to royal intervention. And so we read:

And Mordekhai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews that were in all the provinces of king Ahashwerosh, both near and far, to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adhar, and the fifteenth day of the same, each year (Ester 9:20-21).... Then Ester the queen, the daughter of Avihayil, and Mordekhai the Jew, wrote in the strongest possible terms to confirm this second letter of Purim.... to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordekhai the Jew and Ester the queen had enjoined them... And Ester's proclamation confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was entrusted to writing (Ester 9:29-32).

Initially Mordekhai wrote in his name alone, but this proved insufficient. He needed the 'royal we'. "This passage informs us that the Jews kept this misswah [of Purim initially] but later relinquished it. Mordekhai therefore needed Ester to proclaim it, as she was the queen.... it was not established for all time until Ester published it in writing" (R. Avraham Ibn Ezra, ad loc).

Mordekhai, Hillel, and Torath Erets Yisrael

And so it has been ever since. In every generation there are Torah scholars who adopt a Shammai-like approach - their main concern is traditionalism, maintaining that which was. On the other hand, every generation also produces great Torah minds, rabbis who take the longer view and are able to perceive new needs and challenges and formulate an appropriate response.

Let us not forget, too, that the Jewish people are just coming out of a 2000-year Exile. Like a patient awaking from an extended coma, we need to take stock of our situation, refamiliarize ourselves with our natural surroundings and relearn many things that were once instinctive.

"But isn't that like Reform Judaism?" some ask. Not at all. Reform Judaism simply bends to whim and convenience. As opposed to such flippancy, change and innovation in response to new/old realities, based on authentic halakhic sources and reasoning, and aimed at furthering the goals of the Torah itself - as with Hillel's Prozbul or Mordekhai's Purim - are not merely legitimate but are the very life-blood of the Oral Tradition and halakhic process.

Making changes to received Jewish practice is a delicate matter to be sure. The rule of thumb is "if it works, don't fix it" - but what our leaders do when it doesn't work? Mordekhai and Hillel serve as the paradigm; the revolution begun by Mordekhai and Ester was continued by Hillel and his disciples. And the House of Hillel, as we know, eventually won the day, setting the course for the Jewish people for future generations.
