The Path To Holiness

The Path To Holiness
Several times recently, as I have clicked around the Catholic blogosphere, I have come across posts referencing the Sacrament of Penance, sin, and the four last things.

I'm starting to think that Catholic blogs, like the liturgy, have seasons. First, there is Advent, in which Catholic writers spar about when it is holiest and best to put up Christmas trees, why we shouldn't have any parties or eat cookies or anything celebratory until after the 25th of December, and why we should all practice a pure Little House on the Prairie frugality and give our children a few simple wooden toys as gifts (and then after Christmas, perhaps, put up a rueful post about your child's favorite bit of garish plastic and which grandparent gave it to him or her, frustrating those readers whose parents do not give garish plastic as gifts and whose children were less than enchanted with the simple wooden toy idea). Then, there is pre-Lent, during which Catholic writers gripe about leftover Christmas goodies and plan diets, express their deep longing for the mortifications of Lent, and scold those who take their Christmas decorations down before Candlmas; Lent follows, and with it lots of introspective posts about the faith coupled with posts complaining about the weather, homeschooling (one's own, that is), and the general sluggishness of life--though a few of the more seasoned bloggers write lofty spiritual posts about why they are giving up blogging/Facebook/Twitter for Lent (the reason given is that they need less virtual clutter in their lives, or that they are in need of monastic silence, and while that's true in some cases I think others just don't want to post during a six-week state of sugar deprivation). After Lent there is joyous Easter posting complete with pretty outdoor pictures, as fits the season. Sometime after Pentecost we enter Ordinary Time, during which Catholic bloggers will write about veils, modesty, the Liturgical Wars, sin, virtue, politics, culture, the sacramental life of the Church, why other Catholics are so darned annoying, the Sixth Commandment, elections, Church news, Catholic motherhood, the new school (or homeschool) year, sacred music, and the like. Then it's time for the Annual Halloween Pumpkin-tossing Fight, just in time to prepare for the pre-Advent fretting...

...I'm kidding. Mostly.

But, as I said, I've noticed a kind of mini-meme lately having to do with sin and the Sacrament of Penance, which are both quite good things to write about. It's true that there's a great deal of difference as to how these things are discussed on a priest's blog as on a lay person's blog (which is not surprising, really). Priest bloggers tend to exhort the faithful to go to confession more often, to make a good confession if they haven't lately, and to examine their consciences carefully and well; lay people tend to talk about the benefits of confession, how important--yet difficult--it can be to get the whole family there regularly, and to express frustration about inconvenient confession times, weird penances, flaky advice (including the infamous "Oh, that's not a sin! Don't worry about it!" response given to anything confessed from a small lie to a bank robbery
) and the like.

I do appreciate priestly exhortations to get to confession, but I also admit to some of the frustrations. We try to go every four to six weeks, God willing. We take advantage of one of two half-hour time slots our pastor has; and, as I've said before, he's the pastor of both our small mission parish with 300 registered families, and our larger sister parish with 1200 families, so I don't criticize Father for not being available for confession more often. But still--he's responsible for hearing confessions for 1500 total families, and priest-bloggers are fond of saying families should go once a month at the minimum (weekly is better, say some!). If 1500 individuals, let alone 1500 families, showed up for confession every week I think Father might not be able to handle the crowd, in much the same way that I might not be able to handle a dozen copperheads should they, and a thousand scorpions, show up unexpectedly in my living room.

I would like to hope that every priest who exhorts his faithful to make weekly, or even monthly, confessions is making time for that to be possible. In my whole life, though, I've only met one such priest (note the 13+ hours of confession Father has scheduled for a single week!). In that amount of time, this dear priest could actually hear the confessions of 1500 individuals in a month--what an example he sets for his brother priests!

And that brings me to the point of this post, which is not, in fact, about confession, or even about sin.

Yes, it is important to try very hard to conquer sin in our daily lives; in fact, one is not being a serious follower of Christ without such an attempt. And yes, in order to root out sin, especially sins which have become habitual, or which could involve grave matter, or which could lead us into committing grave sins, we need to be aware of our sins, examine our consciences without scrupulosity or fear, and make a habit of regular (and even, if we are blessed by a priest like the one I mentioned above, frequent) recourse to the Sacrament of Penance. Yes, both priests and our lay brothers and sisters are acting in charity when they remind us of these things.

But holiness is about much, much more than the avoidance of sin. In fact, the greatest saints, the ones who persevered in the pursuit of holiness all the days of their lives, would be the first to admit that they could not completely root out sins and imperfections and the desires and temptations toward sinful things in their earthly lives. The fallenness of our human nature does not permit anyone born with that taint of original sin to reach perfection upon earth. We must wait until we behold our beloved Christ after we die to realize fully how far short we still are--and yet how greatly He loves us and wishes us to remain with Him forever. We will, I think, embrace Purgatory joyfully, eager to be back in His presence cleansed of those things we didn't even realize still clung to our souls.

If we go too far in equating holiness with the mere avoidance of sin, I think we run the risk of becoming like the unworthy servant in the parable of the talents. So fearful of incurring his master's wrath that he could do nothing good, the servant buries the money, taking comfort in the notion that at least he won't lose any of it. Instead of being rewarded for his caution he is punished; he has not made use of what his master gave him, but has instead in selfishness and fear acted as though the responsibility was never given to him. While we cannot become holy without learning to hate sin and turn away from it, we also can't become holy by fixating so strongly on the avoidance of sin that we begin to shun others, to seek only the purest and most like-minded of people with whom to associate, to consider anything "worldly" or "secular" to be inherently evil or at least impossibly tempting, and, quite simply, to "write off" as lost and worthless anyone who does not live as we do and share, not merely our faith in Christ and His Church, but our smallest personal tastes, likes, preferences, and approvals of minor things.

The path to holiness may frequently be lined with reminders of our sinfulness and our need for confession, but the paving stones are very different. They call us to live our specific vocation as faithfully and willingly and earnestly as possible, to try to die even a little bit to our own selfishness every day, to look for Christ in the eyes of everyone we meet--and to recognize Him joyfully in the poor, the ill, the weak, the oppressed, and to serve Him in them to the best of our poor ability. Becoming good, learning to be holy, is not just about avoiding evil, nor must we think that we must completely conquer sin before we can try to embrace goodness. No one in this life will completely conquer sin; our Blessed Mother was the only person never to sin, and the rest of us will fall woefully short of her--but we please her, and her Son, when we make the valiant effort--and yet, that alone is not enough.

If we would become holy, we must be like the son in the Gospel from this past Sunday, who, after saying he wouldn't serve his father, went and did so anyway. Did he, from that day forward, never displease his father again? It's doubtful. But his service was a step forward on the path to holiness, the service of doing his father's will. It is the same for us; the path to holiness requires a leap of faith from stone to stone, as each stone reveals to us the Father's will. We will reach heaven by following that Way of Love, and only by following Him there.

Hypothetically, that is. For the benefit of any uptight readers I will state for the record that I've never heard anyone admit to confessing a bank robbery, let alone being told that such was not a sin. I am using "bank robbery" as an all-purpose grave sin here for the sake of humor.

Protected By Powerful People Or The Keeping Power Of Christ

Protected By Powerful People Or The Keeping Power Of Christ
In some whys one could correctly say that some progressives in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have conspired to undo the biblical standards that Presbyterians held for most of their history. I have mentioned before how in my own presbytery the head of a commission sent to find out why two gay elders had been ordained in one church (before 10-A was passed) made fun of an evangelical teaching elder when he complained that they did nothing about the problem. But certainly a remark by a gay teaching elder in another presbytery points to the same problem. The Rev. Brett Webb-Mitchell wrote in his article Out and Ordained:

The reason no formal complaint was brought against me was because I was part of a Presbytery where powerful people protected me as an out gay pastor. There was an informal "underground railroad," where those in authority shielded us from prosecution but could not assure us employment. There are conspiracy theories and then there are conspiracies. The first has to do with worldwide movements consisting of several hundred years and consist of fraudulent details and nameless people. They do not lead one to repentance but rather to suspicion and even hatred. The second has to do with real conspiracies confined to no more than a few years or less. It is usually possible to name the people and seek both confession and repentance. And looking at the biblical examples, where there is no repentance, there is often, eventually, God's judgment.

Some biblical examples are Ahab and Jezebel conspiring against Naboth in order to gain his vineyard. Their plot ended in Naboth's murder but also eventually in their own judgment. Another conspiracy was Rebecca and her son Jacob conspiring against Isaac (the father of Jacob and husband of Rebecca) to gain the family blessing for Jacob. It is a long story with a great deal of sorrow, but it finally ends with some reconciliation and redemption. There is also, in the book of Acts, the forty Jewish men who bound themselves to an oath, plotting to kill Paul. God protected him. And then there is Judas conspiring to betray Jesus. God's will was accomplished.

But is there more? That is, do the schemes deepen? Webb-Mitchell writes:

In order to become more inclusive, there are many "next steps" to be taken in righting past wrongs. For example, as more states permit LGBTQ people to wed, churches will need to craft a theology of marriage that includes LGBTQ congregants. As ordained religious leaders, our health-care and retirement benefits will need to be inclusive of our families. In order that LGBTQ clergy will never be discriminated again in the Church, denominations will need to include LGBTQ people among those who are represented and protected as a minority group. And where do orthodox believers stand in all of this-how will they face tomorrow? Should we be angry, in despair or fearful? When Jesus tells Peter that his Church will be built on the rock of Peter's confession and that the gates of hell (Hades) would not overpower it (Matthew 16:18)-he was not referring to physical enemies, not even to Satan in particular but to death. The Church, the true Church, will not die. As R.T. France puts it, "To say that "the powers of death" (so RSV, correctly) "shall not prevail against" the community is thus to say that it will not die, and be shut in by the 'gates of death.' The Church is forever and our place in the hands of the Father will continue on ceaselessly. (John 10:25-30)

Clothed with the righteousness of Christ, loved by Father, Son and Holy Spirit we can love those who conspire and even bully their way into power. Strengthened by the word of God written and the living Word of God we can go on proclaiming, teaching, praying and serving. God has given a tremendous calling to his people.

Place

Place
I'm a city dweller. I have little opportunity to go out into the country, and the closest I usually come to nature is a city park. I live in an apartment, with no spare rooms. I know of no other pagans in my area. So I imagine a place; a temple for the mind, as I have none for the body.

I start with a forest. Mostly deciduous, with some coniferous as well. Lots of birds and animals running around, living their lives, occasionally ending them. A living forest; a nice place to take a walk in, though there's no real paths. The birds twitter, the leaves rustle, squirrels chatter, brooks babble, and so on. The wind brushes against my face, rustling the white robes I'm wearing (sans footgear). The sunlight is filtered through the greenery overhead, dappling the landscape.

Add a small clearing. A brook runs through it, off to the side a bit, making the usual brook noises. Overhead, the nearby trees' greenery still blocks most of the sky, but the light is fairly bright. Some rocks lie near the brook. Birds fly around above, squirrels jump from tree to tree, a rabbit nibbles greenery at the edge of the clearing, eyeing me. In the center of the clearing sits a square cube of stone, about a meter each way. Covering it is an undecorated white cloth, upon which some objects rest. On the other side of the alter from the brook is a spot for a fire, ringed with stone. Wood is laid out, but not burning yet.

On the alter itself are the implements for most rituals. In the center is a small oil lamp, which is always kept lit. A bowl of Water, taken from the brook, is on the left (east). An incense burner, with several cones of incense ready, is on the right (west). On the far side of the alter (north) is a crystal, found elsewhere in the forest. Close to me (south) sits a white candle, ready to be lit. Several other implements are arranged about the main ones; a white-handled knife, a silver goblet, a golden pentacle, a foot-long branch, a home-built deck of cards similar to Tarot, a bowl of salt, a round mirror (currently covered).

Elsewhere in the clearing, near the fireplace, is a small bench/table, made of wood. On it lies my Book of Shadows and a pen, ready for me to record whatever I think I should. Also on the table are miscellaneous ingredients, including various herbs, stones, and flowers. There are also some biscuits and wine, to ground myself after the ritual. Hung over the firepit itself, on a tripod, is a small cauldron. Off to the side a bit is a tape/CD player, ready to play some "atmosphere" music or rhythyms.

I now prepare myself for the ritual itself. Removing the robe, I step into the brooks, and splash water all over myself. I wash the robe, as well (drip-dry)
to rid it of unwanted influences. Redressing, I step to the alter. The sounds of the forest slowly fade from my perception. I take the wand, and draw a circle in the air around me and the alter, defining the space the energy I create will stay until I release it.

I take the pentacle in hand, face north, and call to the spirits of the earth, wealth, solidness, to bless me and this circle, and to lend their aid to this ritual. I put down the pentacle, and light the incense from the central lamp.
Facing east, I ask the spirits of the air, mind, thinking, to bless both me and the circle, and to lend their aid. I light the candle, face south, and ask for the blessing and aid of the spirits of fire, passion, activity. I raise the bowl of water, face west, and ask for the spirits of water, emotion, to bless and aid me. Finally, I ask the Godess and God to bless both me and the circle, and to lend their aid to the ritual.

Then, I ritual. :)

As I finish the ritual, I turn to the four quarters, and thank and dismiss the spirits who aided me. I snuff the candle, but let the incense finish burning.
I thank the God and Godess for listening. I step out of the circle, breaking it. As I eat some biscuits and drink a cup of wine, I write down what I learned from the ritual in my Book of Shadows.

O Que Magia

O Que Magia

O QUE 'e A MAGIA

O QUE 'e MAGIA DE VERDADEMagia, Bruxaria, voar, transformar, poderes, afinal... "MAGIA EXISTE OU 'e INVENc~aO?"

Cuando so~namos tenemos experiencias: vemos im'agenes, escuchamos sonidos, incluso pensamos.

Youre Too Evil To Speak

Youre Too Evil To Speak
Akin to the general consensus from feminists, we have this article from Andrew Bolt as he states the obvious in relation to free speech, that feminists hate as well. Their endless meanderings regard any comments made by anyone regarding anything female as either misogynists or sexist, take your pick. Any attempt at free speech or discussions, where they are concerned, has to be banned. Sound familiar..YOU'RE TOO EVIL TO SPEAK Janet Albrechtsen on the violent Australia Day protest whipped up by Julia Gillard's office: "The thuggish activists saw no irony in proudly exercising their right to free speech by using violence and intimidation to shut down those with whom they disagreed. " The protests personify a strain of illiberalism found more often among those on the Left than the Right. Far from being progressive, members of the illiberal Left often work from one of two basic premises to curb free speech."First, the masses are too dumb to be trusted with the unpredictable consequences of too much free speech. Accordingly, these self-appointed moral guardians of the great unwashed impose politically correct rules to proscribe free speech..."The flip-side of this mentality is that if you happen to take a different political view on important matters, then you can't be a decent human being after all. And if that's the case, it would be best if you did not air your indecent views. In short, the second premise used by moral guardians on the illiberal-left to constrain free speech is the "too evil to talk freely" rule. Those with different views are too evil to be trusted with free speech."(To illustrate that truth, no comments, please.) For "Evil will flourish, When Good Men Do nothing". Feminism is Evil, it is beyond question. It has clearly and proudly demonstrated that itself..

They may think their r out(p)ines are normal, however, they are not. neurotic compulsive disorder is one of the treatable disorders, and effective at that. First, obsessive compulsive disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. People that have been diagnosed with OCD repeat upsetting thoughts over and over over again called obsessions. They do this to try and make the thoughts go away. These actions are compulsions. However, thither is a difference between obsessions and compulsions. Compulsions are behaviors or rituals that you feel driven to act out again and again.

Usually, compulsions are performed in an attempt to make obsessions go away. For example, if youre timid of contamination, you might develop elaborate cleaning rituals. However, the relief never lasts. In fact, the obsessive thoughts usually be back stronger. And the compulsive behaviors often end up causation anxiety themselves as they become more demanding and time-consuming. There is no middle ground. for each one attempt to remain neutral in relation to divinity fudges macrocosm is automatic eithery synonymous with unbelief. It is far from a moot question, for if God does exist, accordingly nothing else really matters; if He does not exist, then nothing really matters at all. If He does exist, then on that point is an eternal heaven to be gained (Hebrews 11:16) and an eternal nefariousness to be avoided (Revelation 21:8). The question for Gods existence is an extremely primeval one. One might wonder why it is necessary to call evidence for the existence of God. Mischievous Talk By Kanimozhi

Mischievous Talk By Kanimozhi

What it means to you to be a Chennaiite?

A very casual query that any Chennaiite - a rich person or an average layperson - will be able to talk something passionately about the bond they have with the city or the way they grew up in the city. But not so with Ms Kanimozhi.

She gave an exceptional narration that showed a terrible disconnect she has with the city but a horrible connect with a crass political mentality.

She could not say a single word on what Chennai gave her or did to her, nor on the way she felt as one who grew up here (or she grew up elsewhere, I don't know). She seems to have no emotional bonding with the city. All that she knew was how to thrust her concocted beliefs to take a dig at Brahmins and Hindus.

Chennai is popularly known for filter coffee, The Hindu and idly- saambaar. The Hindu nowadays looks like their party newspaper and idly saambaar is a non-issue. What is left is filter coffee, and see how she has used that GK to mouth the horrible things! (given at the end of this post)

Filter coffee is connected with 'maami' (usually referred to the married Brahmin woman) according to her.

Kanimozhi sees this maami married to a Muslim or a Christian!

This is her image of Chennai or rather what it means to be a Chennaiite.

Can a maami serve filter coffee if she is married to a Christian or Muslim?

Avanga appo coffee poduvangala illa karuvaadu samaippangala? (Can she make coffee or karuvaadu / non-veg?) Where could Kanimozhi get filter coffee if the maamis go after Christians and Muslims?

Kanimozhi also says that we have not made religion political. But she is making every bit to snub Hindus and takes a peculiar satisfaction in seeing Hindu religion losing its character. Her Chennai must have only Christians and Muslims and no Brahmins or Hindus, it seems.

Why maamis, aren't there women from other castes who have made a mark for themselves? Why single out maamis?

Kanimozhi even takes a solace that there are no honour killings in Chennai (or Tamilnadu?). But there are other killings and deaths. The horrific suicides reported in Chennai in the last 30 days were mostly about Christian women and young school going children who could not bear study-pressure. What does her government do to avert such deaths?

Kanimozhi must also ponder over why there are no honour killings in Tamilnadu in general. She need not whack her head to find the reason. It is enough she sees the Tamil Movies that show the reality atleast in marriage issues. There will be a maaman (uncle) or father who would drag the eloping girl back home and get her married to the one decided by them. In rural Tamilnadu inter caste marriage is still not tolerated. If we go by the surveys brought out by English magazines, Chennai and Tamilnadu still continues to be conservative in marriage issue. Even the city groomed people go through matrimonial columns through 2 levels of vetting - one done by parents on social and other issues and then only the prospective guys and girls come into the picture.

Marriage is not a social approval for a man and woman coming together. It is thought to be so in the present day world. But Hindu marriages have a lofty ideal of discharging duties of dharma, artha and kaama as a man and wife. Then only the final goal of Moksha will become possible. Of these 4 ideals called Purusharthas, Dharma and Moksha stand on extreme ends. Artha (material life) and kaama must be conducted with dharma. Only then Moksha will be a smooth reality. This mentality makes one tolerant to ups and downs of life and accept each other than expect the other to fulfill one's fancies.

This is the basic idea of Hindu marriage and the ideology of ancient Tamils too. Puranauru tells about a king who conducted his daily routine by adhering to Dharma, Artha and kama. Those who sought gifts from the king need not wait at the entrance of his palace to meet him. The king divided his day for Dharma when he used to meet people at a specified time and present them with gifts and the things they wanted. Then he would spend time with his courtiers to discuss about how to conduct the affairs of the state (artha). Then he would retire to his apartments to be with his wife. So the one longing to meet the king to receive gifts from him could go at the time allotted for dharma related issues and get satisfied by the King's generosity.

These 4 purusharthas are unique for Hinduism and are universal in application. The institution of Hindu marriage is built on these purusharthas only. Arjuna was ready to quit fighting mainly on this plank - that the women widowed due to the death of the men in a war would not be able to live in dignity and would be led to trespass the Kula dharma. As a result, the oblations to the Pithrus (departed souls) could not be offered. When oblations are not offered, the future generations would be afflicted with incurable diseases. The causative person who made all these would have to incur terrible karma. Arjuna did not want himself to be the causative one for these things. He was ready to live the life of a despondent than to become the cause for such a scenario.

The Purushartha connected to Hindu marriage is not a mere belief, we can see the misfortune occurring from the 3rd generation onwards. Oblations to Pithrus is the main issue. A Hindu marrying a Christian or Muslim or an atheist of the Dravidian mold or a Hindu converting to these religions would cease to offer the oblations.

The 3rd generation offspring of these people start showing up symptoms of incurable maladies.

As an astrologer I am receiving the 3rd generation people of the Dravidian atheists of the 20s and 30s and also converted people. Jupiter, the lord of Dharma is found badly afflicted in their horoscopes. They also complain of peculiar diseases that have no cure. Kanimozhi can recall the life of some Dravidian politicians who have such instances happening in their families. As a humanist I feel sorry for them, but as an astrologer I can not say any remedy for them other than telling them to fall in line with the Hindu way and wait for one more generation to pass off for better fortunes to return to the family.

Don't undermine Hinduism Ms Kanimozhi. Your father's favorite Silappadhikaram says more vociferously how karma comes back ferociously to the one who initiated it. Taking glee at maamis or Hindus becoming Christians or Muslims can not do any good to you in your karmic long run. You may dismiss this as rubbish. But that is what Kalapurush wants people to do. The trespassers or wrong doers are not punished immediately. They would have their free run in this birth or at the current period. Kalapurush would wait for the immediate memory to die down and then strike at an unsuspecting moment later. No one can escape its dragnet. That is the real lesson that everyone must remember.

Celebrating a special bond.

By

KANIMOZHI,

Rajya Sabha member

Outsiders perceive Chennai as a very conservative city, they think of a maami serving filter coffee. That's the image of Chennai outside. But then, the maami could still be married to a Muslim or a Christian, be a top surgeon and a social activist too. That's the real Chennai.

We might be a city of a million kinds of people, yet we live in harmony and can look beyond our boundaries such as caste, class and so on. I don't think anyone here -politicians included, can even dare to dream of justifying an honour killing or such retrograde aberrations seen in some other places.

We are very inclusive and this has not happened overnight.

Chennai is one place which can celebrate a Tamil film and also the December Carnatic music festival, along with the world cinema.

Of course, there are things that have to be done. It would have been wonderful to have our satellite city and it is sad that even expanding our airport is becoming a very political thing. How would you get investments without a good modern airport? And where is the employment then?

I think in certain ways we have to open up and stop making everything political. Thank God, we have not made religion political. And in spite of our pride in Tamil and Tamil culture, Tamil Nadu is one of the very few states and Chennai one of the very few cities which are so inclusive. We have respect for other languages and cultures, and the courage to celebrate them.

Our culture is way ahead and has a more human face. And we are justifiably proud of that.

Hippety Hop There Goes Peter Rabbit

Hippety Hop There Goes Peter Rabbit
Have you ever seen this scenario take place?

A good friend calls you to tell you that they are struggling with their current church and wants your advice on how to work things out. Your heart sinks as you realize that what he or she is wanting is not what they are asking for. The first or second time the phone call took place, you may have encouraged them to speak with the pastors or elders to try to work out any differences or resolve any issues. Now, the real reason they are calling you is not to seek your help and guidance in seeing relationships restored. What they really want is for you to say that it is acceptable for them to don their Peter Rabbit suit and hop to the next church that might or might not make them happy.

I am reminded of the old joke about the ship that stops at what they thought was a deserted island only to discover that an old man lives there as a castaway. Taking a tour, the man proudly shows off his little hut where he lives and takes the captain into another little building that has a steeple made of coconut palm leaves. He informs the captain that this is his church where he worships God. Thanking them for coming, the island castaway walks with them back down to their ship. However, the captain is intrigued about a third building that the man had said nothing about, so he asked him what it was. The old man replied, "That's the church I used to go to!"

"Sadly, hopping from church to church often becomes the normal pattern for many Christians. Instead of considering what may be wrong in their own life, the fault is always placed at the feet of the church that they used to attend. The sad reality is that even if they were to attend by themselves, like the old man on the deserted island, they would eventually find a reason to leave."

I HAVE LONG CONTENDED THAT THE REASON PEOPLE GO TO A CHURCH IS MORE TIMES THAN NOT THE VERY REASON WHY THEY WILL LEAVE. As an example, if you go to a church because they have a great music program, when that ministry fails or begins to struggle, you will look for another church. The same is true if you go because of the programs or all the ministries designed to keep your children happy and entertained. If the really hip, cool, relevant youth leader leaves and the youth group dries up, you will soon be on the search for a new place to worship.

FOR THE RECORD, I AM NOT DISCOUNTING LEAVING A CHURCH BECAUSE THE CHURCH REFUSES TO ADDRESS SIN, OR BECAUSE OF A CHANGE IN TEACHING TO A DOCTRINAL POSITION THAT IS CLEARLY NOT IN LINE WITH SCRIPTURE. I am speaking about the plague that has infiltrated churches to the point where members are switching from one church to another faster than they switch fitness clubs or switch from the latest diet to the next.

Now as honesty is the best policy, I am afraid that in the beginning of our marriage, I was there. We hopped so many times that I had a custom-made Peter Rabbit suit that I would wear before I even attended the first service. While I was ensuring that my family was with me, I was certainly not being a spiritual leader.

The normal routine was to schedule an appointment with the pastor. In that meeting, I would grill him on the usual "important" issues like the KJV Bible, or if they used CCM in their services, whether they had adequate programs to babysit my children when my wife and I wanted a break, etc., etc., etc. Yes, I remember playing the spiritual card of "We just want a place where we can serve and where our family can be fed!" That would normally score points with the pastor and his wife.

However, it may have been a week later, month later, or even a year later, we would become discontented with something that was being done and we would "miss" a Sunday to see if somebody came to visit or to call us. Eventually, my standard phrase became, "Well, I think we should be looking for a new church because we are not getting fed at this church! What do YOU think, Sweetheart?" That was always a good indicator for me as to whether she was unhappy with the church as much as I was or whether I was just looking for an excuse to leave so we would not have to become too committed.

I can remember a conversation with my father one day while we were in the midst of yet another church hop. His comment was, "Son, I'm sure that every church around your area can't be bad! What is it you are looking for?"

That was a good question and the standard answer was usually, "mumble-mumble-mumble-just don't feel like I am getting fed-mumble-mumble-mumble."

Looking back, I realize that not all churches and pastors we visited or were part of it for awhile were preaching false doctrine or involved in covering over issues of immorality. Some of the churches were struggling works or small and it was just easy to come up with excuses about how we "need more teaching for ummmmyeah, more teaching for the kids." That was the answer! Some of the churches were large though and the excuses then would be, "well, we feel like we are just a number and our needs are being overlooked!"

But the truth is that until I was willing to find a place that was first and foremost doctrinally sound, the rest of what we were looking for was actually irrelevant. Further, when we found a place where doctrine was the focus along with expositional ministry of the Word, I should have been thankful that somebody cared enough to feed my soul and my family as we worshiped together. However, this was rarely the case because doctrine was not as important to me as I thought it was or as I pretended it to be. You see, if doctrine was really important, THAT would have been the reason why I remained instead of looking for another excuse to run to the next place.

So instead of focusing on learning and how I could be a blessing to others, I simply became Peter Rabbit again and laid the blame for the next hop on the previous pastor or church we were attending.

However, this plague that is devastating to churches is a problem that occurs for two main reasons. It is often these two reasons or a closely related one as to why I and others like me would have hopped from church to church, or even why you or somebody you know is still getting plenty of usage out of their Peter Rabbit outfit.

First, pastors and elders have made it too easy to be part of their social club. Having been there as a pastor, I can recall how great it felt to finally get some visitors to come in to service. Of course, in our desire to see them back again, we would invite them to lunch to get to know them. While there is nothing wrong with taking guests home for Sunday lunch, there were times when during the conversation I would be listening to all the things they would tell me they had done in their previous church and how eager they were to find a church whereyep, you guessed itwhere as they would put it, "We just want a place where we can serve and where our family can be fed!" Hmmmmm, where had I heard that before?

My problem was that I was focusing on numbers instead of disciple-making. What I should have been asking was WHY were they leaving their previous church? Was it a doctrinal difference or was this another church hop? Then, I could have clarified WHAT kind of doctrinal difference would cause them to initiate an upheaval in their family and leave their local fellowship behind. When it got to the point where they were expressing an interest right at the beginning, I should have taken the time to contact my fellow brother and colleague to verify there were no hidden issues.

The problem would become compounded if there were issues or if the family was not leaving their previous church due to moral or doctrinal problems, and by accepting them into our assembly, we were choosing to overlook the issues hoping that our church would be the catalyst that might throw them into a better relationship with God. Sometimes that does happen, but I am afraid that accepting problems from one church is only going to add to the problems that already exist in your own ministry. By accepting the problems when a person is leaving for an unbiblical reason, we have not helped that previous church or pastor, nor have we helped the family looking to join, nor have we helped our own church.

Another sordid example from my own life came home to roost when I first pastored in England. Like the times when we would leave a church for the wrong reasons, we had some folks do the same with us where I was pastoring. It caused quite a bit of turmoil, and while they left because in their words, "We prefer to go somewhere that we can hear nice, fluffy messages," they simply ran right down the road and were accepted into membership there. I never received one phone call, but neither did I attempt to contact the other pastor. As far as I was concerned, "He could have the problem if they want members that bad!"

Now I recognize that not all leavings fit into this category, but I have found that many do. It is hurtful and does not portray a unity within the body of Christ to those who watch us from the world.

Today, my ministry is different and I hope there are a few areas in which I have grown considerably. Numbers are not so important any more and I try to be content with those whom God has placed in front of me each week at each meeting that I have the privilege of opening His Word. When I speak with a person now, I want to know the answers to those hard questions that I should have been asked and that I should have asked in prior ministries.

And if our assembly accepts somebody into the fellowship, my prayer is that it will be for the right reasons and that they will be coming for the right reasons. I do not offer programs with the hopes that more will come and I have no desire to present people for acceptance if they look like they are hopping to avoid problems that they refuse to address either in their own lives or that might just be a minor difference or even based on a personality conflict. I do ask them if they have sat down with the leadership at their previous church and spoken about their concerns. If they have not, I do tell them that I will contact the leadership to see if we have their blessing to work with the family and if there are any concerns of which we need to be aware.

As a little side note, there is something to be said for the "letters of commendation" given from one church to another as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 16. I am NOT talking about the little postcard sent when people transfer their membership by letter either. But that should probably be a post for another day.

Now on to the second problem for the plague of church-hopping and it is fairly simple. Members today have little to no commitment for the hard things of God or His Word. As long as they do not have to be committed, nor are expected to be committed, they will continue donning the Peter Rabbit suit as often as it suits their whims or desire for the latest and greatest programs racing the church circuits.

Commitment seems to be a dirty word in many circles. It requires that we give up our pet foibles and whims in an honest desire to share fellowship with brethren around what is important. What is important is what is clearly stated in Scripture, and not the latest battles raging today over minor issues like Bible versions, style of music, or a whole host of other concerns that are separating brethren that are not worth the fight and only make us look foolish to the watching world.

To conclude, my encouragement to fellow pastors and elders is to be careful who we consider allowing into our midst. Sometimes wolves start off looking like nice fluffy little pups. We are to guard our flocks in our calling as overseers and this will require taking a more proactive stance on dealing with issues like the perennial Peter Rabbits. Brothers, we are not islands to ourselves and should be working to fellowship with others who are like or simmilarly minded in doctrine and teaching. Our churches profit little if all we are doing is growing by sheep-stealing.

And, to my fellow brothers and sisters, from past personal experience, the Peter Rabbit suit is not all that it is cracked up to be. It is uncomfortable to wear for you and your family and to those you keep leaving behind. Wearing the suit will normally only serve to get you all hot and bothered. Then you will end up looking for fellowship in all the wrong places and for all the wrong reasons. It is time that we take the suits off and don't bother hanging them back up in the closet to wear another day. It is time they were destroyed and that we started seeing commitment to God and His Word, and to have a heart to deal with the problems as they arise.

In all this, our one desire should be 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Whether you eat or drink or whatsoever you do, DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD!"

Also you will need a new ink pen preferably black, a sheet of white paper with no lines and a box of matches. Something to place the match in after you like the candle would be advised as well (like an ash tray).

This spell can be done in one setting, however, I recommend that you spend about 15 to 30 minutes per day over the course of 14 days

* PREPARE FOR THE SPELL AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH NIGHT

Using the techniques provided in Lesson Four: Meditation 101 you will want to find a quiet place to perform this spell and set the mood, charge your chakras and place a protective shield around your body (and work area if you have improved your visualization skills enough). Be sure to have the candle, matches, pen and paper set to your right side of your body (or left if you are left handed). It would be a good idea to sit facing a Southern direction since Fire is ruled from the south and this is a Fire Element Based spell.

* LIGHT THE CANDLE

Use a match with your right hand (or left if you are left handed) and strike it against the box. Light the candle and as you do, thank the fire for assisting you with your magic.

* WRITE DOWN YOUR REQUEST

You want to take the pen and write out your request at the top of the page. If you want to stop smoking, for instance, you can write "I want to quit smoking for the rest of my life."

* Fold the request - " Skip this step if you are doing it over several days."

Fold the paper in half and then fold it in half again.

What Wrong With Halloween

What Wrong With Halloween
I really hadn't intended to do a second Halloween post this year, but two things happened. First, I saw several "pro-Halloween" posts like this one, which seem to go out of their way to send a message that says, "Look--all the cool Catholic bloggers take their kids trick-or-treating, so if you're doing some alternative All Saint's thing then you're either a) a silly goose who thinks trick-or-treating is Satanic, or b) a silly goose who thinks that fake severed heads dripping with fake blood hanging from a neighbor's tree are too scary for small children instead of being exactly the kind of totally awesome "memento mori" thing Catholics ought to love, or c) a silly goose who doesn't get the secret but awesome Catholic mysticism involved in dressing up like a Disney princess and getting free candy from the neighbors in an ancient mystical rite that has been around forever--or, well, that only exists in America and only since sometime in the 1930s or so, but we shouldn't let history get in the way of a good story, right?"And second...but we'll get to that in a moment. For the umpteenth gazillionth time, I do not think that trick-or-treating is inherently evil. I also don't think that reindeer and popcorn balls are evil, or that candy-shaped boxes full of chocolates are evil, or that leprechauns and green beer are evil, or that Mardi Gras beads and king cake are evil. What I do think is that they are secular add-ons to religious holidays, and as such are totally and completely optional for Catholics. If my brother's Chaldean Catholic in-laws (for example) don't throw a green-themed party on March 17, are they being less than Catholic? Or is it simply the case that St. Patrick's importance to the liturgical calendar depends just a bit on one's own particular cultural heritage? If I don't attempt to bake a king cake on Mardi Gras, does this make me less than Catholic--or is it simply a recognition that my family's traditions don't include this particular part of pre-Lenten preparation? So, if you'll pardon me, why all the fuss? Why do those who do enjoy trick-or-treating get all bent out of shape when they hear that my girls--who are too old to trick-or-treat anyway, by their own estimation--prefer the All Saint's party their awesome aunt and uncle host? Why do so many Catholics seem to care so much about this one tiny optional activity to celebrate Halloween--an activity which hasn't been around in its present form all that long, historically speaking, and which may or may not be practical depending on where you live, what your neighborhood (if you live in one) is like, and a whole lot of other variables that are going to be different for each family?I'm not sure I have an answer. But what I do have is an observation. In our dysfunctional culture, a lot of the secular "add-ons" to real holy days have become corrupted by that culture. We Catholics are very aware of this--we bemoan the disappearance of the word "Christmas" from our culture and the substitution of the ubiquitous and ambiguous "Holiday;" we worry about the commercialization of Christmas and some of the silly extremes to which secular elements have been taken (Mrs. Claus, anyone?); we recognize that people who've never set foot in a Catholic Church agitate for Gay Pride floats in St. Patrick's Day parades; we are aware of the sinful excesses of much of the Mardi Gras events in places like New Orleans; we sigh over St. Valentine's name and memory being used to advertise jewelry, much of it mined, manufactured and obtained in ways that are cruel and unjust from our poor brothers and sisters in countries where existence is a constant struggle--I could go on, but you get the point, I'm sure.Halloween has not been untouched by the corruption of our culture. Whether it is used as the backdrop for movies featuring graphic violence and gore, or whether it is "claimed" by various neo-pagans, or whether the present fascination with vampires sinks its fangs into the day, or whether it increasingly becomes an excuse for people to dress and act immodestly, or whether it combines all of these negative attributes and adds others I haven't thought of or mercifully don't know about, our culture has not left Halloween alone. Does this mean that Catholics have to reject all secular celebrations of it? No, as I've said umpteen gazillion times already. But what it does mean is that each family is going to have to decide for itself how much "Halloweening" it is comfortable with--and if a Catholic family decides that they'd rather skip the neighborhood trick-or-treating and attend an All Saint's Day party instead, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. And that brings me to that second thing that is making me write this post (remember, way above, I said I'd get to it?). Our dysfunctional culture loves to attack what is good and holy, and it will do this at Halloween just as it does at other times of the year. We took this picture at a local branch of a big-box grocery store last week. My daughters were appalled by this costume being presented quite casually alongside costumes featuring witches, monsters, vampires and the like:If you can't read the print on the package, the title of this costume is "Playful Nun." As our oldest girl said, "Nuns are supposed to be an example of chastity and piety. Their habits come down to their ankles, and they wear sensible shoes, not sheer stockings and heels. There's no such thing as a sexy nun." She instinctively found this costume disrespectful and insulting to our faith, as I do as well--yet the "sexy nun, pregnant nun," and "evil/sinister priest" costumes grown in popularity in our sick culture. However you choose to celebrate Halloween this week, then, our job as Catholics is to serve as salt and light to this culture, not to go along placidly with its worst elements. If we do the "trick-or-treat" thing we can insist on costumes that are modest and that don't pander to cultural sickness, and we can also insist on good behavior, polite attitudes, and moderate candy consumption (because gluttony isn't a virtue, either). If we do the All Saint's party, we can share stories about the saints that inspired the costumes, play saint-themed games, insist on the same standards of good behavior and polite attitudes, and remember that warning against gluttony while in the presence of Aunt Charlotte's famous pumpkin cake roll or any of her other much-anticipated dessert delights. What none of us can do is pretend that the cultural sickness doesn't exist, or that it isn't a problem for us all. What's wrong with Halloween isn't really Halloween; what's wrong is our post-Christian culture, and its continuing decline into deviance and depravity.
