Wheel Of The Year Wreath

My prized piece, Wheel of the Year is finally complete.

I spent the time this weekend collecting the items that I needed and arranging them with care around a grapevine wreath. The artificial flowers are recycled. At some point I'd love to be able to dry my own flowers from my garden and use them in a wreath but for now. These will have to do.

This wreath is 24inches across all natural grapevine with an assembled star in the center painted with gold paint and covered in grapevine. This is the largest size wreath I make.

So there it is. Finally complete. This piece was created for Rachel Riggs of "Silver Stars" in Fayetteville NC.

I'll be working on a Samhain Wreath next. One this same size and one the traditional door size. If you're interested in getting a wreath, I do sometimes make extras. For example I have two door size Yule Wreaths currently available.

I initially wasn't going to allow this post because I try to not let my blog become a posting site for uncharitable comments but here goes. I am hoping for some thoughtful charitable responses to Mr. Anon. He certainly knows select quotes from popes and the catechism more than I do! This interaction was taken from the comments in response to my Faith With Reason post.

I THEN RESPONDED:

Catholic teaching never equates the Pope with Jesus. If you could get past your vitriol* perhaps you would be able to see this a bit more clearly. Sometimes hatred and prejudice can blind a person's intellect as well, but that's just my opinion. 33,000 different denominations each with their own peculiar ideas of salvation, baptism, end times etc. All because folks think for themselves and become their own popes.No thanks, I would rather trust in The Church that Christ started rather than create my own unique doctrines, and inserting my own words into Scripture or removing books I dont' like. (as one of the reformers did without hesitation.)I would hope from reading the blog you would realize that Catholics are great thinkers and have tremendous intellect. The freedom to be a great thinker is granted when the freedom is constrained by correct doctrinal boundaries set by a teaching magisterium instituted by the Holy Spirit. I think it would be best to re-read my blog. I don't think you understood what I was trying to get across. My words were not meant to be harsh and I disagree that harsh judgments deserve harsh words(where's that in the Bible?) I was an evangelical for 30 years and often-times experienced a tendency to down play the use of my intellect. The saying I used about evangelicals was obtained from an interview of the author of the above book I posted about, he himself is an evangelical. His entire book is a statement that charismatic/pentecostals are in danger of emphasizing emotion and downplaying intellect. I was writing about his book to explain that I too did that for many years and I was one of the folks he spoke about.

An example of my "dummying down" was my refusal to look at history particularly the documents written by early Christians. Justin Martyr as well as many other writers in the first centuries of the church wrote that the Eucharist was indeed the real body and blood of the Lord, and they were brutally persecuted by the Romans for being "cannibals" as you alluded to. Up until the 1600 century, Christians never viewed the Eucharist as symbolic until the Reformation. But I refused to acknowledge any written history of what early Christianity looked like due to my anti-Catholic bias and vitriol against all things Catholic.

"We call this food Eucharist, and no one else is permitted to partake of it, except one who believes our teaching to be true and who has been washed in the washing which is for the remission of sins and for regeneration [i.e., has received baptism] and is thereby living as Christ enjoined. The Church is happy to accept the faith of other believers outside the Church and considers them our brethren, albeit separated from us. Johannistag) wird zwischen dem 20. und 26. Juni gefeiert, weil am 21. Juni die Sonne an ihrem h"ochsten Punkt steht und diese Nacht somit die k"urzeste des Jahres ist.

Es wird um Freudenfeuer getanzt oder Paare springen "ubers Feuer, um Fruchtbarkeit, Reinigung, Gesundheit und Liebe zu f"ordern. Das Christentum kennt den 24. Juni als Johannistag oder Johannisfest.

Als MITTSOMMERFEST werden die Feierlichkeiten zur Sommersonnenwende bezeichnet. In den skandinavischen L"andern, in Finnland sowie im Baltikum, wo die N"achte zu dieser Jahreszeit kaum dunkel werden ("Weisse N"achte"), sind die Br"auche besonders lebendig.

Im Keltischen Jahreskreis kennt man die Mittsommernacht auch als Alban Eyfen.

Our first step of Spiritual growth is baptism. The church is who has the authority to baptize ("Acts 18:8"). The Bible teaches that after we receive Christ into our life, we are to be baptized. It is a symbol that we are walking in a new life, and not ashamed of Christ.

2. FOR FELLOWSHIP AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF OTHER BELIEVERS.

"Acts 2:42" tells us that the church is a place to provide godly fellowship with one another. "Hebrews 10:25" warns us not to miss out on church, because we are to be an encouragement to other believers. Not only does church provide a place for us to grow, but it enables us to help others grow.

3. FOR SHARING CHRIST WITH OTHERS.

It is possible for someone to share Christ with others around them, and not be a member of a church. However, I have not personally ever met someone who shares their faith with others, who was not involved in a Bible-believing church. Christ gave the great commission for the church to fulfill ("Matthew 28:19-20). "The great commission is that the church would preach Christ to all of the world. 4. You always return to your body: If you are afraid of not being able to return to your body, consider this. We leave our body every night, when we sleep. Have we ever "NO" come back? So just because you are a little bit more conscious of your astral experience, does not invalidate your ability to come back this time. We3 arein contact with the body all the time!

Believe it or not, the real struggle during astral projection is to stay in the astral planes and not come back to the body before you want to. You can do everything in your power to not come back! But you always do, even if you do not want to!

5. You can not be possessed: You can never be possessed during projections.

I don't discuss politics on this blog. There are two main reasons for that. One, I tend to be too liberal for my conservative friends and too conservative for my liberal friends, and I'd like to keep all of them as my friends. More importantly though, I'm a fiction author. Presumably you come to this blog expecting me to post something about writing, reading, or other authorly (is that a word?) type stuff. There are plenty of sites either promoting or criticizing whatever your political views are.

So I want to point out in advance, that while you may disagree with what I am about to say, don't disagree based on your political views. This is not about whether you are right or left, democrat or republican, Greenpeace or NRA. This is about teaching our kids to use their brains.

Tuesday the President of the United States gave a speech to school children all across the nation. If you are a parent of school-age children, you don't need me to tell you this. You don't need me to tell you because, all across the nation, parents and schools chose whether or not to air the speech to their children. But by the fact that the school district decided for me that my children should not watch something they might disagree with.

Let me repeat that. I fully support the right of any parents to say, "My children aren't going to watch that so-and-so." Totally your right. But a school-a place that is supposed to promote free speech, free thought, decision making, and open-minded analysis-decided my children weren't intelligent enough to watch the President of the United States talk about working hard at school, without becoming brain-washed. They told my children in essence, "Don't listen to points of view that might differ from your point of view."

Excuse me? Does that make sense to you? Are we so closed minded that we don't want our children to ever listen to-or read-the thoughts of people who disagree with them? I get asked a lot by parents what I think about children reading certain books. Harry Potter supposedly promoted witchcraft. Twilight teaches girls to let guys spend the night in their beds. The best response I ever heard to that was from a man I respect a great deal, Orson Scott Card. At a conference where this was brought up, he said, "Read the books with your children so you can discuss the parts you agree and disagree with."

What an idea! Teaching our children that it's okay to read or listen to things that might go against their views or beliefs and then deciding for themselves what to make of it. Please don't get me wrong here. I'm not saying all movies or books, or speeches for that matter, are appropriate for all ages. Personally I don't think Twilight was ever written for ten year old girls. I think some of the later Harry Potter books were very dark for younger children. You as a parent have the absolute right and responsibility to decide because of language, violence, themes or whatever, that a book is not appropriate for you or your children. But do we have so little trust in our children that we think the first time they come across a girl with a wand they are all going to run out and become wiccans? Do we believe that because our children listen to a fifteen minute speech by the president that they will all begin worshipping at the Obama shrine? And if we really do somehow believe all that, wouldn't it be better to watch it with them and explain why we disagree with it?

As I said at the beginning of the post, I am not here to discuss politics. And if you really believe strongly that JK Rowling wants your kids to start performing pagan rituals, that is your right. But we are raising the next generation of leaders. There are hard decisions that are going to be made-decisions that will require study, thought, compromise, change. Your kids are going to grow up. They are going to go to college or join the work force or enlist in the military or travel to other countries. They WILL be exposed to beliefs different than their own. You can't control that. What you can control is whether you have taught them to think. Whether you have taught them to respectfully listen to the views of others and not only consider those views but intelligently explain and defend their own views as well.

I love my kids' school. I love the teachers and the staff. I wouldn't want them anywhere else. But I will be watching Obama's education speech on-line with my children. I will be discussing the speech, the man, his views, my views, and what I think our country is doing right and wrong. When I found out my school wouldn't be airing the speech, I asked my sons what they thought about that. My eleven-year-old said, "That's stupid!" When I asked him why, he explained with a very earnest expression on his face, "Because he is the President of the United States." I hope that in the future, my children's school will not bow to parent pressure. I hope they will remember that I send my children there not to be indoctrinated, but to learn how to think.
