Gathering Vs Non Gathering Professions

[:1]I currently have Max Leatherworking and am levelling up Blacksmithing on my Rogue. In most MMOs I've always chosen an armour type profession (LW) and a weapon type profession (BS, although I know you can craft armour aswell). The thing is, whilst my LW is max, my BS is only 275 and I must have already spent over 3k on it so far, due to the extremely high prices of materials on my server.

I'm the type of person that likes to squeeze as much DPS out of his character as possible so that I can perform fairly well in a Raid, therefore I'm trying to have two max professions which can aid me. The thing is, I'm just wondering how much extra DPS having 2 non gathering professions can actually give a person. I'm running very low on cash now, due to the Blacksmithing powerlevelling I've been doing, and it dawned on me that if I was to have two gathering professions (unsure which are the best atm) that they would just be a license to print money for me, i.e. I'd get rich basically.

What do you guys think? Is it worth it for me to have two non gathering professions so that I can squeeze out some extra DPS (again, I'm unsure how much extra DPS exactly I can get from these) or do you think it may be better for me to pick two gathering professions so that I most likely will never have any gold issues in the future?

It just seems that I'm missing out on a hell of a lot of gold by not having 2 gathering professions, but then again if I WAS to have 2 gathering professions my DPS might suffer instead, but I'm unsure by how much exactly.

1. The gathering professions also give buffs.... Skinning gives you master of anatomy, which I believe adds to your melee crits. Herbalism gives you a heal. Mining + strength.

My usual advice is to have one gathering profession and one crafting profession that uses that gathering profession. (Mining + bs/jewelcrafting; herbalism + inscription/alchemy, etc.) There are those who will disagree, but for a well rounded approach that looks at both gold earning potential plus use, this has always been the way I have gone about it.

(And no, two gathering professions aren't really 'printing money'. A lot of experienced players do this until a certain point, and then drop one of the gathering profs for a crafting prof. Very few characters actually stay with this, unless they keep a stable of alts to cover all their crafting/gathering needs) Thanks a lot :) Semii, Mining gives +stam (At 450 mining skill the buff is +60 stamina).

Honestly, Blacksmithing gets easier after you reach Outland. A LOT easier. Pre-Outland I'm almost certain most of the stuff you make from 250+ is blue quality, AKA heavy mats. If not, you're doing a couple green quality items.

Edit: Okay, I was wrong, turns out it just takes a LOT of Thorium Bars from 250+ =P.

Ah, thanks. Neither of my mains are miners.... But my point is still there- gathering professions give buffs as well as crafting professions.. most serious raid groups want 2 'raiding professions'. Thing is, most of them are equal in terms of bonuses, within 1 or 2 damage points.

For example (based on a caster dps):

JC gives 3 special gems, which takes the normal 23sp to 39sp each, making a benefit of 48sp in total.

Enchanting gives 2 ring enchants of 23sp each, making 46sp extra.

Mining gives 2 extra sockets, so 2x23sp gems also gives 46sp extra.

Inscription has those shoulder enchants which give an extra 46sp over the SoH version.

These are usually seen as being better in raids than the gathering buffs, although there are exceptions for tanks (mining) and some melee dps could probably justify skinning for the crit (not sure, tend to go for casters and healers :-))

hth Mining is very quick to raise up to 375, but becomes much slower after that unless you have the lvl 70 cold weather flying mount to get around Northend... sadly it's not a good place for a non-flying lvl 60 to ride around...I tried!

I started mining and smithing last week in between quests on my lvl 58 DK and raised them to 375 and 250 respectively in around 4 -5 days. I also made a 500gp profit selling the excess ores/bars and gained lvl 60 in the process.

Thinking along similar (albiet longer term) lines, I've just started my first warrior alt and have initially chosen Skinning and Mining for their buffs and profits. Agreed Waflob. +102 stamina to bracers (LW'ers) is definately not something to be skipped over. 62 stamina higher than the best enchant to bracers (+40), and if you also have Mining (Unless you want to go BS for the 2 extra gems, but... Same bonus, +60 stam, if you get the epic gems.) you have a grand total of 162 stamina more than before, 1620 HP is definately a large enough boost to matter, especially as a raider (Kings=+10% stats.) tank. All classes get an additional bonus in their talents (Or for DK's frost presence, Druids +25% stamina in Dire Bear Form) to stamina. If you spend some time between leveling to farm the necessary ore, Blacksmithing really isn't so bad. There's only one point where many people give up: 260 to 300. Like Maz implied, that is indeed a huge breaking point because of the insane amounts of Thorium you need. There are a few rare drop recipes which diminish those amounts significantly (Mithril Spurs and Thorium Shield Spike are godsend for anyone who wants to level up BS), but unless you're lucky you have to invest a hefty sum to get those. From 275 to 300 is pure hell if you don't have that shield spike recipe. Loads of Thorium and apart from that, extra mats like star rubies or rugged leather.

But if you get past that point and into your 300, it gets easier again.

I'm not exactly in favor of having two gathering professions, although the buffs are nice enough and the money is good. I simply like crafting, me thinks. I'm with semi, I also favor having a crafting profession and the gathering profession that goes along with it. Two crafting professions is only advisable if you have alts who can provide you with the materials. Having to rely on the AH means you're going to need thousands and thousands of gold.

Provided that you have alts who can support you with materials, it's definately worth it to have two crafting professions: engineering, jewelcrafting, alchemy and inscription, paired up with either blacksmithing, tailoring or leatherworking. I would go with only one armour making skill and I definately wouldn't choose blacksmithing for the weapons - most endgame BoP gear is actually armour and there are far cheaper and easier ways to get good weaponry. In terms of the buffs, I think that 2 gathering professions are nice to have while leveling. When I leveled my rogue I had skinning and herbalism and I have to tell you, the crit bonus and the extra heal were lifesavers in more than one occassion. Once you get to level 80 though, things like JC and BS are much better to have.

THE ROBERTSON PARADOX?

Jeffrey Weiss, who blogs at "Politics Daily," sent an e-query to some of us e-columnists, or at least to me, supplementing his blog-list. He raised enough good questions to merit a response. Revisiting the by-now-over-visited tragicomedy of televangelist Pat Robertson on Haitians and the Devil, Weiss wanted to discuss a "paradox: From Jon Stewart (a secular Jew, for goodness sakes, who quoted Bible verses on the Daily Show) to the pastor of First Baptist Dallas in "Newsweek" to, well, you in "Sightings," the range of people who have weighed in is impressive." Why a paradox?

At home on that range, let me comment. Yes, Stewart is a secular Jew; I'd prefer to call him a "profane" one, in the etymological and other senses, but he is at home with the Bible. Weiss thought that Stewart had nothing to do with religion. Correction: Among many instances of familiarity and interaction with religion, his "Daily Show" hosted Jim Wallis of "Sojourners" for a third time last week. The First Baptist pastor? He was on the spot because Robertson is a fellow-Baptist, but it was not hard for him to distance himself publicly from "Pat." As for me? I'm in the business of being unsurprised by the many evidences of religion in American culture, and report on some each week. What surprised me is that Weiss, who really knows his religion, was surprised by the attention to religion in this kind of national case.

He asked: "Is it just that Robertson is such an easy target?" Partly. But, adds Weiss, "Would so many people pile on if they didn't care about the topic? Why bother offering a 'correction' if the subject is irrelevant?" Now we are getting to the point. I'd argue that "so many people "do" care about the topic" of religion. From the New Atheists through profane and even obscene "Comedy Central" comics, the Hollywood of today, the United States Supreme Court, and higher academe - where religion is back, and strong - there is noise. So the question becomes, why would Weiss get the impression that few people care? He has some reasons.

As I recall, he won spurs in metropolitan daily newspapers, where City Desk editors often get grumbled about by religion-desk writers, who often have to fight for space and status when the assignment editors are indifferent to or hostile about religion. But as our weekly assessments in a decade and more of "Sightings" point out, religion shows up in numberless ways. Once more, then, why is Weiss puzzled over this paradox? He answers clearly: Many of the new polls show American citizens ignoring religious dogma and communion, and then drifting or galloping off to ill-defined, non-institutional religion or "spirituality." So one might not expect such citizens to care.

That evidence of drift and distancing from informed, intact, and institutional religion tells much about current Americans, but not about the kind of religion that makes news, because news-making religion still impinges on the drifters' lives. A few code words will illustrate: religion and militant Islam, the Religious Right, priestly sexual scandals, Haitian relief efforts, ordination of gays and anti-gay activities in denominations, Israel and Zionism, and, for that matter, the popularity of magazines whenever they put anything about about Jesus on the cover. One wishes - and I think Weiss, as he covers religion, wishes - that there were more attention given to what I just called "informed, intact, and institutional" religion as opposed to Protean and often egregious or violent forms. But when people reacted to Robertson while he was acting egregiously, they were not stepping out of character. One needs no telescopes to discover subjects when doing "Sightings" in religion.

I apologize for not having posted in a while. However, my life has been kind of down lately. I have been out of work for the past 6 months with very little progress of finding work. However, my faith in God has not been extinguished by my situation, though at times I am tempted to give in and give up. I pray daily for God to bless me financially with a job and with money to meet my needs. I also pray daily for my friend who is not talking to me at the moment and for my little niece (who had been having some problems with her parents lately but thankfully it appears that her parents have wised up somewhat and are treating her better). Introducing Slavoj Zizek

I thankfully stumbled Fora.Tv recently. I highly recommend checking it out; it's brain food on crack.

While searching through their religion section, I found a presentation by Slavoj Zizek. I must confess, I know little about Zizek, but from what I can tell, he's a hot item right now. He's a self-described Christian Atheist. From what I can tell, he draws his theology primarily from the Death of God theology that arose in the 1960s (something I intend to learn more about in the near future).

In the following presentation, entitled "God Without the Sacred," Slavoj Zizek challenges the idea that "if there is no God, then everything is permitted," (6.43, a quote allegedly attributed to Dostoyevsky) which would lead to unchecked exploitation. In response, he argues that it is the self-appointed agents of God, "the so-called fundamentalists who practice a perverted version of what Kierkergaard called the religious suspension of the ethical. On God's mission, one is allowed to kill thousands." (10.0) So, "If God exists, then everything is permitted." (13.30)

Zizek appears to adhere to an understanding of the sacred as something capable of extraordinary evil, much like how a human may appear in the eyes of a cat. This concept of the sacred leads to active sacrifice to stave off this possible evil. With this understanding, he claims that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam aret first religions without the sacred. Christianity in particular undermines the power of the saced by viewing sacrifice from the perspective othe innocent other. In these three religions, liminal experience remains, but not the need of sacred scapegoating to stave off great evil.

Zizek's narrow understanding of the sacred is not something of which I'm fond. As a result, I don't agree with his negative portrayal of the "neo-pagan, post-secular" perspective, which according to him views the sacred (and therefore the sacrificial act) from the communal perspective (of course, in contrast to his Christian perspective that views the sacred and sacrifice from the angle of the innocent other). Nonetheless, there is a lot of good stuff for thought in this video.

For you see, I believe it matters not what name you choose to give yourself to define your beliefs as it does what you actually believe and how you act upon it. Follow your true self, and act with love in your heart always and that is how you will become one with the divine.

In my journey I've seen so many who wish to become witch's who have been told that if you do not venture to the dark side ever you aren't a proper witch. I'm not in the business of calling people out on things but I watched one very respected blogger tell her readers that if they did not work with the dark magic and engage with the dark side then they weren't balanced and ergo weren't a proper witch. I felt a sense of sorrow as I watched several comments underneath her post saying that they guessed they then may have not found their path because by her definition they weren't a proper witch.

My heart went out to them. Wicca is a religion, and a lot of people that are Wiccan also engage in witchcraft and would consider themselves witches. I've seen many different debates on who can call themselves a Wiccan, witch etc as well.

My position is this... Does it really matter what we are all called? Is it really worth arguing with someone over if they are as good of a witch as you? Does that not make you less of a witch by doing that? I believe that if someone feels called to the path that we should embrace them and help them to find their way. Teach them to work with the Gods and the Goddess, to embrace the Blessed Mother Earth and all the elements. Show them that with love in their heart and pure intentions anything is indeed possible. We have the power to heal the world. To use love and intention for the greater good and not only heal those people around us, but our dear Earth as well.

As Witch's, Wiccans, Lightworkers, I believe we have a responsibility to the world around us. Most of you who have found your way here have already been called. So I am taking a risk of being criticized and standing in the fire for you. I do not believe it is necessary for you to ever work on the dark side or do anything you don't feel completely comfortable doing. I believe it is perfectly acceptable for you to work with Jesus as an Ascended master or whomever else you choose. I believe it's actually a benefit for you to work with the angels and allow them to help you spread the love and light.
